Good point that. Zep had a certain pride that they could "handle anything between the 4 of us" - but it would have helped if Plant could have played guitar (or keyboard) as well, to ease the load on the other 3. @dlewtweentorla1210
@dlewtweentorla1210 3 ай бұрын
Keith had made the comment when hearing Jimmy had a new band and heard a couple of the tracks that were recorded (before the album came out). Richards had stated many times he liked the guys alright in Zep but not the music. Same goes for Pete Townsend, who always ripped on Zep music. Interesting thing is, Page had played on early Who and Stones albums as the producers didn't like the respective bands guitar playing. Add to that, the Who almost lost Entwhistle and Moon who were fed up with the WHo's infighting and almost joined what would become Zeppelin. In each case The Stones and The Who, were two of the biggest bands at the time, both getting knocked off the top of the mountain once Zep hit the scene. More than a few in the business have said the negative comments towards Zep's music was sour grapes and being a bie jelly.

@@dlewtweentorla1210 Tell us about something Townsend doesn’t rip on.. here’s the thing.. if it weren’t for the low ceiling on that tiny stage the who might never of been so blessed.. Keith could play drums with anyone and it would be a blast.. The destruction of equipment that fed the flames of rock and roll happened quite by accident. On the far other hand Jimmy Page quite strategically evolved rock music and was extremely powerful in the direction of rock shows.. you may be too young to remember when small venues turned into stadium festival seating.. it wasn’t a Neil Pert acoustically perfect setting in the beginning of rock shows.. I saw Bowie on a 12” wooden stage in a new concrete convention center for Diamond Dogs and he hated the sound.. he told us so.. the phenomenon of Loud to reach the nose bleed crowd (multi functional goal) was perfected by 4 sticks.. everyone else listened and followed along..

I saw The Rolling Stones live during their Steel Wheels tour. Behind the backdrop I could see two guitarist playing the whole time Keith and Ronnie were swinging their arms around and prancing around on stage. Many other people who have seen them before and after I saw them said the same thing. And when Keith does play guitar live he has his guitars tuned to an open tuning, just like you would do if you are using a bottleneck slide. Keith has no right to judge any other guitarist Especially Jimmy Page.

Richard’s can play Robert Johnson songs on an acoustic guitar and they sound great. Keith is and always was a great guitarist, he chooses to play simple riffs because they fit the groove of the song better. Keith is the driving force behind the sound of The Rolling Stones. No working guitarist in competing bands of the time thought he was anything but the sound of the Stones. Great rhythm guitarists that seldom play leads are crucial to keeping a solid groove.

All this hate towards Keith. He actually said that Jimmy is Led Zeppelin. He didn't care for Bonham's drumming and Plant's singing... Plant doesn't care for his singing style during this period, either. Keith and Jimmy are absolutely the same in one important and brilliant way. It's their genius ability to hear and layer guitar parts - melding the parts into one. By the way, they both have huge respect for one another as musicians.

Yeah sure... And then get the bootlegs from the Knebworth gigs and hear what they REALLY played on those nights, not the studio-doctored stuff from "LZ - DVD". That stuff is about as "live" as "KISS Alive". Also, LZ never did anything "perfectly" live on stage. They were notoriously hit-and-miss, especially Bonham and Page. Plant had awful nights, too. His voice was never the same after he damaged it severely in 1973 or so. They were great when everything came together - but half of the time it didn't.

This is a horrible taint on the thoughts of a bohemian.. someone so free as Keith.. who shines so much love into music.. who has embraced everything from the basement floor up.. someone who has the creds to pluperfect any music he enjoys.. to say this publicly.. well, it hurts me heart.. not because the mighty zep can’t withstand critics.. God knows that’s been done magnificently.. it’s just that my main man Keef here.. he’s showing his well deserved place in history and it smacks lilts of ethnocentric.. he is not too old because he has become a spirit in rock.. really his work will haunt the world as long as there are material bits to it.. it just makes the God Father of Rock look less invincible.. not to appreciate the iconic place in history Led Zeppelin holds.. Loud evolved well thanks to Jimmy & John.. thunderous rock took shape from the tiny mono footprint.. and this is what he has to say about it?

The Song Remains The Same, Kashmir and Achilles Last Stand all had alot of guitar layering in them in the studio. Live was another matter and Jimmy did the best he could. In 1977 at MSQ, Page performed all 3 songs with no layers at all and it was admirable. Yet, when I saw Page & Plant with full orchestra, the sounds you heard in The Song Remains The Same were staggering!

Jimmy Page is one of rocks most amazing guitarists, an amazing composer first, almost all songs recorded for albums had multiple guitar parts, but he always figured out how to play it live on his own! Mighty impressive! I’m glad they never brought in extra guitar players! That would have destroyed some of the magic!

They should have added a second guitarist starting for the 75' tour. Would not have been a member per se, only for touring. By 75' many of the arrangements had become too busy for one guitarist to play. Many songs could not be reproduced live as a result, and several songs from Physical Graffiti and on really needed that second guitarist to fill out the sound. Just my opinion.

Imagine if page had a rhythm guitarist behind him. Would Page take the same risks as a guitarist if there was another player behind him? Page famously never played a song the same way twice. He would constantly be changing the phrasing and tempo of his playing. I honestly think a second guitarist would hinder Pages playing by forcing Page to play more conventionaly and not take those risks.

I agree with Keith Richards at least as far as live performances go. Zepplin was one of those bands that definitely needed a second or third guitarist on stage when they performed live, and the lack of that extra guitar or two is noticeable on so many of the recordings of Live Zeppelin songs

When I was a kid, I had a dream that Bill Wyman quit Rolling Stones. Band hadn't found a new bass guitarist yet. They had to go on stage. Keef strapped on both a guitar and a bass guitar. It wasn't even a double necked instrument. It was 2 single necked instruments strapped to the one musician. Keef worked so hard. He kept moving his hands back & forth between the 2 instruments. He didn't miss a note, but he was exhausted afterwards. He said it was too hard to do that night after night, and that they needed to find a bass guitarist ASAP. 😌💭 🎸🎸

All the people arguing about which is a better guitar player are missing the more important point: These are two of the most successful guitar-riff-writers of all time. Nowadays, intermediate guitar players can learn to play most JP’s solos, but nobody is coming up with catchy guitar riffs like JP or Keith did consistently, album after album. That is the genius part IMO.

It’s very fashionable among extremely online guitarists, who can play a gazillion notes per second with zero soul, to criticize Jimmy page’s relative lack of technique at phases in his career, So it’s a pretty salient point that he was almost always doing a pretty bang up job of representing like seven over guitars at once
@theguitarmusicchannel
@theguitarmusicchannel Ай бұрын
Yes and at that point in time (the 70’s) no one was doing that. Page was able to do the job of 2 or 3 guitarists all by himself. If you listen to songs like “Achilles Last Stand”, or “Ramble On” there are like 3-4 different guitars playing over the track at the same time all overdubbed over each other. And he was able to combine all of those guitar parts when he had to play those songs live. Very few guitarists from that era were doing that back then. The only guitarists who were really doing that were Clapton, Hendrix and Beck. So while the youngsters of today write off Page, Jimmy Page was ahead of his time. He helped innovate the guitar to where players are today and that’s undeniable.
