Tim ... I've been speechless ... because I've been weeping. It's taken me 30 minutes to compose this comment. This is one of my favorite ballads of all time, and you sing it incredibly. But I've been a fan of yours, as many of us have been, for years. I've heard you sing beautiful learning tracks before, I've heard you sing beautifully in quartets, sing flawlessly on your album, and heck ... you even sang my tag on this very platform better than I've ever heard it! But for whatever reason... *this* performance of *this* song *today* has tugged at my heart strings in a way you've never done before. Thank you for that. As I dry the corner of my eyes while I try to type: thank you for continuing to share your gifts with the world. You're a special guy, Tim. Thank you.

You best believe I'm smiling at you, Mr. Waurick! You sing like an angel! You deliver each song the way they are supposed to be delivered! You make each chord sound better than the chords themselves, and a lot of those chords themselves are already phenomenal and you somehow make them sound 10x better when you sing them! So yes, I will continue to smile from ear to ear from amazement! 😊

Thank you so much, Brady! I really appreciate your encouragement and kind words over the years! You're awesome!

I can tell you precisely why the chords sound so wonderful when Tim sings them. It is actually quite simple to describe. The root note of each chord is always exactly in tune. The rest of the notes are all out of tune, particularly the baritone. Ever so slightly off the note in exactly the right way to create the resonance and harmonics that bring the chords to life. On an oscilloscope the frequencies would show. The other reason is that Tim knows exactly and how to use vibrato to warm up a chord just before it cuts out. That is a very difficult thing to do just right. This song is a master class in both skills. In fact, listen to that post at the end. As the chords rotate you can hear the lead tuning to the chords, particularly the resolve from penultimate to ultimate chords. The lead note goes up by a 64th of a tone. You won't hear the note change but you do hear the chord warm up.

This song kind of is like life in general. The chord progression I mean. In the end it always resolves

I first heard this song performed at a JAD Contest by a chorus who I can't remember their name. I was a member of the Singing Buckeyes at the time and was able to make it around to see the performance of, at that time, my lifetime. Each verse had a member portraying an appropriately aged person singing each verse...a young lad for the first verse - kicking at the stones on the ground; a middle aged man remembering all the hardships of life, but remembering who was there by his side all the while; and, lastly, an elderly man laying a boquet of flowers on his beloved's grave. I thoroughly loved the first two, but the moment I saw the elder drop the flowers onto the stage, I lost my performers composure and the tears ran freely. Your performance stirred those visions immediately...and it was as if I was back 20-ish years, watching this song. My wife doesn't understand why I cry at certain songs...Amazing Grace on bagpipes (I'm Scotish) and Smiling Through are but a couple....and she's looking at me again, with tears streaming down my cheeks, wondering why I'm smiling while crying. But this time, it's different. She gave me a hug like she's never done before, and I have a couple "drop marks" on my shirt - maybe she's beginning to understand. My mother had blue eyes. I think of her often, and miss her smile (eyes included) more. Thank ou for keeping mom and dad in my heart...where they live eternally. God bless, Tim.

Your gift of voice gave me goosebumps (& tears) I must admit. BRAVO!!! p.s.- it was Platinum in 2000, 14 years after I started my BBShop journey😉. Boston Common sang it in 1980…

I've always had this question. When you record a slow ballad like this with lots of rubato, how do you get all the parts to line up? Which part do you record first?
@TimWaurickMusic9 ай бұрын
I always start with the lead part on a song like this. I'm often looking at the wav forms when I record, so I can see it a bit - but at the same time, a lot of it comes down to "feel" and me giving enough cues as a lead/soloist to follow. I also do a LOT of takes until I'm happy. I hope that helps!
@ABarbershopBarber9 ай бұрын
@@TimWaurickMusiccan you talk about those cues? I have ideas as to what you mean but I’d love to hear it from you.
