For all tourists out there, here are meal times in Spain: - Breakfast: 7/8/9-12 - Lunch: 13-16 - Dinner: 20/21-23/00 Some places will offer a snack mid-morning called "almuerzo" and/or a snack mid-afternoon called "merienda". Other places will still be open in between lunch and dinner hours but the kitchen won't reopen until at least 20, so you'll have a few "tapas" available. If you're a tourist who's used to having dinner at 17 or 18, and you can't wait until dinner time in Spain, I guess if you order enough tapas you could call it a dinner 😂

I work as a recepcionist in the Canary Islands and Germans are actually one of the best nationalities to work with. Even when they're mad they keep their manners. The most annoying thing they do is trying to speak German like they're in Dresde when you tell them "Ich spreche ein bisschen Deutsch" and then act confused when you don't understand them. Bonus points when their problem is that the TV doesn't have sound or whatever but they still feel like they need to tell you their whole life story lol United "can I speak with the manager" Kingdom has to be the worst.

My international friends are always surprised about two things: - So many people out at night on a weekday. As you said, 22:30 and people are still in the terrazas, walking, etc. Even children. - Children inside bars, especially if it is already quite late (festivities and weekends). I didn't realize that it is not common to have children in your bars at 23:00 until I lived outside of Spain. My whole childhood was playing in the nearby park of some bar with my friends while our parents were sitting in the terrace of a bar, or inside the bar. And pretty late on festivities and weekends! In some countries, children are not allowed in bars at any time, and that was surprising for me.

Small beers, called "caña" or "botellin" if it's in a bottle (although the names can vary depending on the region), are the absolute best way to have a beer in (most parts of) Spain, and anyone asking for larger ones (they are available in most places) is making a mistake. This is because of two reasons, weather and tapas. If you ask for a large beer, it will eventually get warm, and you'll only get one "tapa", however if you order a smaller one, and a new one when you finish it, they will both be cold and you'll get two tapas instead!

As a Spanish, the reason why we eat dinner so late is double: on the one hand, in mediterranean countries it gets really hot in summer, you start to stand being outside at 9PM. On the other hand, we have the same hour as in Germany, but we are fare more to the west, we should have the same time as Portugal. This is because back in Franco's dictatorship the time was changed so that we could be coordinated with Germany. Thus, when it's 9 in Spain, according to the possition of the sun it should be 8, so we don't eat that late compared to Portugal or Italy. Also in Spain we usually do not have a heavy dinner, the main meal of the day is lunch at 3pm, so we don't go to bed super full! 😂

I moved from Australia (notorious early birds) to Spain and the whole year I was there I just could not adapt to the different meal timings. I was so hungry and could never get a proper meal so mostly ate from bakeries or cooked for myself. The city I lived in also had undrinkable water. There were no public water fountains at all. I had to buy large water bottles from the shop all the time and felt so bad about all the waste. Also didn't realise shops closed on Sundays. I still miss the place though.

The point of the small beers, cañas, is for the beer to stay cool. You aren't supposed to drink only one, but two (generally). That way you ask for one and you finish it before it gets warm, so you ask for another. You end up paying a similar amount of money, only the beer you drink is always fresh

I am an American and I have worked in Spain three times in the meat industry, twice near Alicante, and once in Valencia and I love the country. Ham, cheese, chorizo, orange juice, fresh fruit and bread was available to me every morning in the hotels I stayed at. One of the meat factories that I worked at made dried ham, sausage, and fresh meat products had a gourmet restaurant on site and they include beer and wine for the workers lunch. Driving was fun and agressive, but parking in the tiny garages took 20 point turns and you can barely open the doors to get out because the car next to you is so Close. Driving there I can see why the Spanish are so dominate in MotoGP and Formula 1. Because I was working I had to be up early, so finding dinner was a real challenge, it was the same way in Argentina. People are so friendly in Spain and you are constantly saying hi to strangers on the street and the price of food and wine was very affordable, the exact opposite of Argentina.
