Yes, big warships have to be careful around coasts and islands due to this. Coastal vessels being very cost effective and dangerous to big warships is nothing new. They would much rather navigate their island heavy coast and torpedo/missile down huge Russian destroyers and cruisers.

Just to be exact: a replenishment ship is not a warship, just because it’s belongs to the Navy. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Spanish sent this ship with this purpose willingly, as it easily can be mistaken for a cargo ship (which indeed is: an armed cargo ship from the Navy), so it’s a quite good trap.
@jeffburnham66112 жыл бұрын
For all intents and purposes, the Patino is a small freighter. You're correct, it's not a warship, and its large complement of Marines was likely due to protect the ship from such pirates as it really has no offensive weapons. It's mission was likely to support the real warships operating in the area. I think the pirates got off easy, they should have been tried and then hanged.

That same year the Wave Knight was present when a British couple was kidnapped by pirates and we weren't allowed to open fire. Allegedly so we didn't endanger the couple, but in reality we had to get direct permission to open fire from London and permission wasn't given. It wasn't long after that that attitudes changed. In 2011 the RFA Fort Victoria had an open brig built under the flight deck for storing the pirates we captured. They were then transported to Kenya for trial.

A ship at sea can pretty much carry anything it wants. The problem is when that ship enters the territorial waters of a country and is thus bound by that country's laws. Most of the "armed contractors" are stationed on so-called "arsenal ships". They meet with the cargo ships in international waters and transfer the armed guards there, then reverse the process just before the cargo ship enters port.

@@5150Magic Yes, and that's a violation of Natural Rights. The right to self-defense is the right to stay alive. No government can legitimately deny that right. Canada rejected the Enlightenment Philosophy of Natural Law as understood by David Hume, Adam Smith, John Locke, Thomas Paine, America's Founders, etc., when the British loyalists from the American colonies fled there. Natural rights were what Thomas Jefferson referred to as "unalienable rights" in the Declaration of Independence. They are rights that we're born with and have as a result of being human. They are not permissions granted or created by government. And it is physically impossible for the police to protect all people at all times. In most places, there is one patrol officer on duty for every several thousand people. On a related note: piracy would be stopped if all people retained their natural right to armed self-defense. Denying that right facilitates and increases piracy, just as denying the right to self-defense increases crime on land by making it safer for criminals. In game theory, this reduces the cost for attackers.

Having served on the USS Kansas City (AOR-3), a US Navy Replenishment Oiler, I find this actually quite amusing. Even more amusing would have been seeing them try to close and board the USS Kansas City...The US Navy and the Spanish Navy appear to have subscribed to different schools of thought when it came to arming an Oiler. We also had two 20mm mounts, but ours were Phalanx CIWS mounts...basically a radar-aimed M61 Vulcan autocannon (6-barrel Gatling gun) firing up to 3000 rounds per minute. We had guns at one time, but they were replaced in the 70's with a RIM-7 Sea Sparrow box launcher capable of carrying (8) 8" missiles with a 19 km range and carrying a 90 pound (41 kg) fragmentation warhead. If the pirates would have gotten close enough, they would have been dealing with 4 M2 .50 caliber machine guns (Ma Deuce ROCKS!) and 2 M60 machine guns....Plus a lot of pissed sailors with M14's and 12-ga shotguns. (Yes, M14. The selective-fire model. 7.62 NATO. They were also used for line-throwing guns, something that the 5.56 NATO blanks just don't have enough charge for.) I'm pretty confident that post-engagement activity wouldn't have been arresting pirates. Perhaps examining rather small wooden splinters which was once a small pirate vessel. For those who are about to point out that a Sea Sparrow missile would not engage a small boat due to the programmed engagement parameters, you would be correct. Sort of. The system could be overridden with manual parameters. Tell it that the calcs are incorrect for the boat's radar signature, and that the boat is actually inbound at 700 knots at an altitude of 2 feet, and it would be happy to engage.
@trident65472 жыл бұрын
A total waste of an expensive missile when a few clips of ammo from the M14: would have been more than enough to convince them that they had indeed made a bad decision that night.

How does a radar cannon aim when there is no radar signal?

just putting a few rounds of small caliber into the boat would have been way more fun , one 50 cal into the motor and watch them slowly disappear . cmon its not like they didnt deserve it Croz. Totally unexpected!!!

@@cvn6555 The human thing is to throw them in prison for life. Take their weapons and belongings and put them back ashore would be a far worse punishment. They are criminals because its objectively the best choice, even if it leads to getting shot. Being put away in a European prison is a lottery win.

A close friend of mine fought the pirates off that coast for years in the United States Navy. There was very tough fighting and violent boarding with many casualties and injuries. These pirates were treated well it seems. Not so easy considering the damage they cost and the lives they take on a regular basis.

The Dutch Destroyer Tromp (defined as a high endurance destroyer capable of years long missions) and has changed crews three times while STILL deployed to Mogadishu. Rules of Engagement (from the Dutch Admiralty) REQUIRE that she fly a 20x50ft NAVAL ENSIGN at the masthead. They were approached by a small boat that Pirates attempted to chase the destroyer away? As they approached (and after Tromp has gone to action stations), the boat hit a large wave, and a man on the bow ACCIDENTALLY fired a rocket propelled grenade in the general direction of Tromp (missing her by more than half a mile), the area commander determined that these pirates constituted a threat and gave permission to fire. Tromp opened fire with all weapons that bore on the boat. After the action it was determined (after the boat burned to the waterline) that the pirates have fired ONE SHOT (the RPG), Tromp responded with nearly FIVE HUNDRED ROUNDS (4.5 inch, 7.62mm machine gun, 25 MM bushmaster cannon, 5.55mm (Dutch Marine small arms) and a NEAR MISS with a penguin missile (from the Tromp's Helicopter), the boat caught fire (but was not abandoned till Tromp approached (none of the pirates could swim?), and they arrested 6 pirates, all wounded.
