i actually worked with this guy. i remember sitting after hours with him while he explained the story and i really couldn’t believe it. told me to google his name and id see everything. him and his family were the most respectful, caring, well-spoken individuals ive ever met in my entire life, shame what they had to go through.

My mother was interned in Bergen Belsen, she was a Polish resistance fighter during the Warsaw uprising, was shot in the fighting, captured and was taken to Bergen Belsen. She was the only survivor of her whole family, the rest were killed by the Soviet backed Ukrainian forces in south west Poland. She was 18 years old when she was captured by the Nazis. She only talked about the war occasionally when she was very elderly and only in brief! She once talked about the liberation of the camp, she was a witness to the events of those days!

Fun Facts: 62 Commando worked closely with SOE where it was called the Small Scale Raiding Force (or SSRF). It's most famous action is probably Operation Postmaster - the capture of Italian & German shipping from the Spanish port of Fernando Po - which was recently (loosely) portrayed in the movie The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare. By loosely portrayed, I mean it's about as historically accurate as Braveheart! Gus March-Phillipps was killed in another raid only about a month after Operation Barricade. The command of 62 Commando then passed to Major Geoffrey Appleyard who led the raid on Sark (Operation Basalt) where a number of the German dead were subsequently found with their arms bound - they had been shot while trying to escape. In retaliation Hitler issued his famous 'Commando Order' in October 1942.

I believe this American story is DISTRACTION from a critical point- Why the 82nd didn't take the bridge on day ONE of landing? There are good videos on that and it seems the Generals forgot the STRATEGIC reason for taking the bridge. One video has Gavin's superior worried about Panzers in a wood nearby. Meanwhile TWO companies are supposed to clear the city resistance and take the bridge, on DAY ONE? The rest of the DIVISION will attack the woods. HECK the MOVIE even shows 30rd corps on DAY ONE being stopped by a battle with several tanks out of action and Michael Caine saying, "THIS IS THE WIDE PART!"

Although he should've had his kukkri with him (maybe just a random lapse), I reckon this was super heroic, but a lot of soldiers are, especially Gurkhas for being prone to fearlessness, in the case of Sgt. Pun and many others like him in the Gurkha Regiments, it's the *aggression* (in combat) that I find impressive more than anything else. But after reading about this, I thought to myself - what do you have to do to earn the VC these days, correction - I shouldn't disgrace the commendation with that joke, and Queen Elizabeth was a good person who I feel discharged her duties as a monarch well, even if not my idea of what a Queen was in the past, and should be (more go where you must, than show). Is it racial, well due recognition has been given in the past on the relevant occasions, statistically higher than all other identities despite racial biases by the way, but I reckon - probably (1). The other interesting story I remember about the Gurkhas was the troop who were asked to provide identification of death, so they cut the heads off the "insurgents", brought them back to the base, and were immediately reprimanded by their superiors 🤣... You did alright my friends, I think some people just don't understand your ways, practical more than "savage" (as some would contend, but really shouldn’t because that’s not right) in my view. But personally I would always try to give any departed opponent the honour of a proper burial - unless they *really* don't deserve it, and I'm quite certain that some of those insurgents didn't, including due to the way they treated women. Here's the thing, if he got scared and ran back then I'm pretty sure they would've gotten overrun, if he stayed but died then they would've gotten overrun, so as far as I can tell - what he did is the only reason they're all alive. 1. "Wtf would you know about it karnt!" - LOL, I reckon there's so much racial bias in military commendations, which I find to be truly diabolical, given what's at stake. To be fair, it may not have been racial (for a change), maybe it just didn’t meet the criteria, but it’s the sort of thing I like, the whole - “when one went against many” on very equal terms aspect of it.

Reason I gave a special shout out to the Gurkhas, other than their tremendous achievements in various battles in various places, is because corrupted Whites who masturbate over the Nazi SS think they're the fiercest soldiers ever, and I don't think that's accurate. Also, do you know what the kukkri derives from, a humble Nepali utility knife from back in the day, it's not a dagger made by demons for stabbing harmless people (& others), as with that *satanic* Nazi blade.

Have a look at the book (audible version is really good) The ministry of ungentlemanly warfare by Damian Lewis, for some great March Phillips actions in ww2, his 62 commando was the forerunner, to the sas and SB. In the book Anders Lassen is probably the main figure, he died in the same assault on Lake Comacchio that clp hunter died on (both VC). If you're an older bootneck you may recall Comacchio group, that is now renamed 43 commando. This was named after these two. Also cpl hunter has his troop at lympstone named after him. Lassen is the only man both the sas and SB class of a founding father of each unit. Probably my greatest hero. If you ever see a version called Churchill's secret warriors, it's the same book. It was renamed. I just can't remember which was the former and latter. I'd highly recommend it. The audible is very good and if you sign up and cancel before the end of the month, the book will be free for you forever.

Perfectly executed operation with a flexible response to changing circumstances, best use of the element of surprise. Experience gained under fire and a little bit of the feelings of safety for the Germans eroded.

These commandos are among the heroes of WW2 that brought the war to the German occupiers of Eurorpe.
@Korporaal14 күн бұрын
If you look at the kind of losses that the Commandos and other early SOF units reported during the War, and compare that to the losses of the well-known raids... Then you can only conclude that most of the work these brave men did during WWII went unreported (of course!), but has also disappeared into history...
