James Hunt was for racing what Bjorn Borg was for tennis in the seventies. He made you get out of bed in the middle of the night to watch him. He knew that he wouldn t live very long, with the job he had and the lifestyle he preferred, so he did whatever the hell he wanted to do. He flirted with princess Caroline of Monaco, he slept with 2500 women, more or less, he drank and smoked and did coke and became world champion. And no, he didn't live very long. But he lived his life to the full and enjoyed every moment of it.

Not sure he knew he wouldn’t live very long. Being a hedonist generally involves being hugely selfish. However, as an entertainer I think the world is poorer for not having these maverick characters at the front of sport. Maverick in ways the average person can relate to…..booze, sex, smoking, ‘bit naughty’ rather than corrupt, controlling, huge wealth, social media.

I once saw video footage of Barry Sheene being stretchered away after his infamous crash at Silverstone in 82. He was lying there with his legs in a hundred pieces and he was shouting over and over again "can somebody please get me a cigarette". You'd have thought that at that moment in time he'd have had far more important things on his mind than smoking. How strangely ironic that was in the end. He survived the 200 mph crashes but was killed by the cigs.

Great times, when people spoke their minds and said outrageous, humourous, original, unsanitized things and it was OK. When sport stars were allowed to have private lives or private moments with the complicity of journalists, when these were participants and were even able to write more interesting stuff without betraying the athletes' confidence. A world away from today's void, sanitized and normalized statements punctuated by the uglyness of the occasional scandal and the total loss of privacy. Compared to today's Big Brother world, the 70's and 80's may well have been the zenith of personal freedom in western societies. Something good was definitely lost for all of us in this respect. Will we ever be able to retrieve it?

@frederickmiles3273 жыл бұрын
Led Zeppelin all private school educated and Moss shared fairly similar tastes. But the nature of modern motor racing pretty much precluded serious drugs longer lasting, unpredictable and destructive. There as 1970s grand prix drivers were mainly into women, champagne, wine beer etc and generally not in the 48hrs before the race as far as drink, there sexual performance was less diluted than rock stars. Although of course with Hailwood, as with Best and Hunt, drugs pills, cocaine and weed were part of the reason for the decline and career ending. I suspect Hailwood and Jim Clark were actual alcoholics by 1974 and 1968. Hunt was really a sub Hailwood and Hunt modelled himself on Mike calling Hailwood, Hollywood which would be more apt a label for James. Had Mike been a couple of years younger and Nurburgring 74 not occured, it is quite likely Hailwood would have been the 1976 team leader and in a way worshiped and respected by the team. From a distance Hailwood could be regarded as the man in many senses. Hunt never.
