While their maximum temperature is likely too much for most, they're capable of controlling it so they can set themselves to the perfect temperature for you. They have a very respectable Special defense of 110, Which means that they are very likely to be very calm and resistant to emotional damage. Let's not forget Tropius was briefly very useful in X&Y for EV training. Since EV training was done via horde batles at the time having a pokemon that could learn Fly to get to a destination, Sweet Scent to start a horde battle, Earthquake as a 100% accurate spread move and Razor Leaf as a backup spread move made it the #1 pick for training competive pokemon that gen.

For sand it’s the Fineness of the grain. Most sand has rather large grains, the sand we used on Pokémon has a smaller or finer grain size. Yes that does have value, in construction Sand is used in many things, from cement to asphalt to Mortar. All of those things require different sand grades.

Tbh, the typing alone is bad enough to put Tropius out of any kind of tournament play. A lot of Water type Pokémon carried Ice Beam as a cover move so the type that Tropius was supposed to be good against. Not to mention, Stealth Rock and Flying type.

Why do you was the Heavy-duty Boots on Grass or Flying when you can use it on a Fire type, the most commonly use attacking type in the game. Immunity to Ground doesn’t mean much when it is weak to Fire, Ice, Rock, Flying, the top 4 most used type in the game. Adding to that the only 3 type that Tropius resist are Fighting, Water and Grass. I’m not saying that Tropius other stuff like stat spread and ability aren’t a problem, I only saying that Tropius typing alone already discouraged many people from using them in the first place.
