I remember the day that SOTT came out. That album was like a Xmas tree, each song like unwrapping a present. I was 13 and every new Prince release took me higher and higher up The Ladder. Contrary to one of the remarks from Susan Rogers, he never ceased to be the best.

Prince was all over the place. His mind must’ve been moving a mile a minute. Women, band members, lawyers, accountants, and even architects were just tools to him when he needed and wanted them. He didn’t love anything really but his music. You never hear anyone talk about him loving them.

@@evarene07 who was it? I really feel sorry for the girls that prince broke their hearts. I guess just like everything else he put in 100% when it was courting time and loving time for the few hours he needed to be satisfied. I'm sure in the moment (she) felt like he did love her. And I'm sure in the moment he did, we can hear it in his vocals, we know he was romantic. But it breaks my heart to hear the recorded conversation Anna fantastic released of prince calling her, he said "Anna I'm sorry its been so long to call you " etc. No pleasures, no how are you? Just right to business about her video. No plans for a date. I don't know how she could hang on for 2 years like that. I certainly can see how one would fall in love with him. But he wasn't a Keeper, and music was his life. He was a heart breaker, with some sweet songs.

Prince was a wild ride, and probably the high point in most of these people's lives. A genius is not a normal person, Prince was complicated and driven to the extreme. If you were in a relationship with him, you would always be #2. He was married to his music. And to top it off, he had problems being faithful and was a gorgeous rock star. In addition to the Susannah relationship problems which bled onto Wendy, I had read in Duane Tudahl's book that Wendy & Lisa asked for a huge raise & bonus. Thanks Sinnik22, I love this series so much and learn something new with each episode.
@lavenderbee36113 жыл бұрын
@Tony I just looked it up, they were getting $800/week and were on retainer -- then Purple Rain blew up. Lisa & Wendy had a lawyer draw up a contract for $1 million each per year. Don't forget this is the mid-80's -- I don't know the rate for hired musicians at that level. This info was in Duane Tudahl's book about the Parade\Sign of the Times Sessions.
@reginafris68223 жыл бұрын
@Tony just finished watching the documentary "Jagged," on Alanis Morrisette, and she said something about her touring band in 95-96 which reminded me of Prince and the Revolution's relationship: "I wrote these songs. YOU auditioned to help ME perform them." Her boundaries were clear. According to Alan Leeds, the Revolution greatly overestimated their role/ influence on Prince. Admittedly, he lead them on to believe that 2 a degree, but he was ALWAYS the maestro; they were the his men and ladies in waiting. Susannah, the other entitled Melvoin, has never fully acknowledged being part of a harem, despite her engagement ring. Prince was Polyamorous Prince, right to the bitter ( VERY bitter) end. Music was the only queen he was truly loyal to. 💜 Btw, I have a soft spot for Lisa, who was probably the closest to Prince in that band, especially after Dez's departure. Asking for big bucks as band members was a huge mistake.

It was during what I thought was my "coming of age" album. 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Having said that, I had NO clue how much drama was involved in it's creation. After hearing all of this, I have to listen to it in full again.

That was a jam-packed 16:40! Confirmed some things I've been thinking. But it is going to take, as always, more listening. As I have gotten to know Prince, the man, and Prince, the genius I get a small sense of the craziness of what it was like to be in his creative vicinity. Sort of a maddening, love/hate thing that you are drawn back to over and over. . . . . smh

I take Prince at his word that success in his eyes was completing the album to personal joy and satisfaction. Sign of the Times was an unbelievable gift to fans and music lovers when it was released. Don’t get it twisted. Even when he wasn’t on top of the charts he was miles ahead of his competition. I can’t dance. But find yourself with me in a club 87/88 when Housequake or Hot Thing comes on, you’ll see me live my better life. Sinnick man props to you I love all of your efforts.
