Gasquet was a prodigy, but so many tennis prodigies don't live up to the hype because it's a different game on the ATP tour. He never had the athleticism to be a top pro, just like Berankis (#1 as a junior) never had enough size or firepower to be a top 10 player. I've never been surprised that Gasquet never won a major. I always thought he was overrated.

Gasquet, the guy that Nadal was never able to beat... in juniors. Gasquet was supposed to be the next big thing, more than Nadal. After turning pro, 18-0 for Nadal. It's very interesting how some players never stop improving and others stop improving at an early age.

I'm a huge Nadal fan. I have seen early footage, of a young Nadal winning a junior tournament, where Nadal was interviewed afterwards. I know a small amount of Spanish, but could piece the comment together. I think Nadal was asked how he was able to win the tournament. Nadal's response went something like this, "The reason I was able to win was because Richard Gasquet didn't enter the tournament." It is interesting how life turns out.

Yeah i think it was a technique thing. In the following years he'd start making like a different kind of motion, like going too upwards with the wrist, flicking it too much, and the shot didnt have ideal speed or weight to really do some damage. Its a shame cause with the backhand being this good, and good game in general, he couldve fixed some of these issues and had an even greater career.

Sauf qu'à force de vouloir jouer comme Nadal alors qu'il ne l'est pas, et bien c'est dur d'avancer. C'est vraiment dommage. Un gros bravo à lui. Not sure why Gasquet gets so many negative comments. We won’t see another backhand like that for awhile if ever given his game. 16 titles, 3 GS SF’s, 2 1000 runner ups, Olympic bronze in doubles. Top 30 all time earnings; he’ll have a comfortable life after tennis. Other than Nadal, he has wins against pretty much everyone. Thousands of players would kill for his career. He said not too long ago in an interview that he knew he’d never be number 1 and said his forehand is maybe top 200 but has a top 5 or higher backhand. It doesn’t sound like he has many regrets and beat Tsitsipas on grass last week.

@@Rumblingbelly I think he means this version of his forehand. I don't really understand why Gasquet changed his technique but this forehand is a lot better than the current one.

He was so tall at that age and he only grew 3 centimetres more. When I was fifteen I think I was around 165 cm. Now I'm around 182 cm.

When i was 15 i was 182 cm,now at the age of 34 im 183cm,so i stopped growing at the age of like 16,Gasquet was probably the same case as me

So this is 2002. Why was this match not a best of five sets ? I remember the Masters 1000 matches became best of 3 sets after 2007

Damn seeing this makes me sooo sad about what this player could have been, he haven't achieve anything great on the tour such a waste when you see all the potential he got and how beautiful his tennis is.... 😢 But nevertheless Bravo for the 600th Gasquet ❤❤❤❤ !!!

Why do tennis fans always think everyone will win a Major 0_o Once you get into the Top 25 everybody is just as talent as you. And are you even aware of who has had to try and beat to win a Masters/Slam from 2002 - 2023

@@thetruth65756 I know but Gasquet was not a top junior he was a rival to Nadal, so much potential !! But anyway we can not change the past... Gasquet is not the first of his kind, and he won't be the last...

@@Braselton21 read my last message (I do agree with you not anyone can win a major but Gasquet was NOT anyone that's the point ! For exemple his countryman Gilles Simon who reached the top 10 in my opinion could not win a Slam and what he did was extraordinary but I don't see Gasquet like that.

I hate seeing this over and over, the big 3 and murray and stan for a while we’re just a level above ridiculous, gasquet did use his talent he has 600 atp wins for goodness sake. Take someone like Donald young who broke gasquet’s record of youngest atp winner, by the logic people use he should’ve got to the very top, yet he hasn’t achieved 10% of what gasquet has
