Like I said in the video I'm pretty hopeful this can capitalize on its potential and flourish into the game I hope it can become! It is early access but I feel similarly as to when risk of rain launched in early access years ago, so obviously thanks to Arc Games for sponsoring the video and allowing me to take an early look. I really am fortunate I can make the videos I want to while having people supporting me do that, so thank you!

I think a demo would have done this game wonders for feedback purposes. The mixed reviews are going to turn a ton of people away and unfortunately they'll probably never stick around to see what Heart Machine is really capable of. Great video! I'm excited to play this game myself later on today. The idea that this game is big enough to impact the genre and add more RPG elements is certainly interesting. I've tried a couple modern roguelikes that have RPG mechanics (and extraction mechanics, shout-out to Quasimorph) but what Hyperlight Breaker is doing is so important and has the potential to reach a huge audience. Anyways rambling over, great vid, thanks Race and Kami!

I loved watching your breaker vods. I hope this will become a semi regular stream game. Maybe once a week? Also, after you beat your first run, I'd suggest that you always sell your entire loadout when you generate a new world. Otherwise beating the game becomes trivial and imo it's much more fun to have to get a loadout in the same world that you beat the bosses.

I’ve been loving Hyper Light Breaker from the 10-ish hours I’ve played and the first boss I’ve taken down. But there’s one thing I’m kinda iffy on. Not really decided it’s bad yet, but I’m not sure if it’ll feel great as the game progresses. The fact that properly extracting saves your equipment is a good incentive to actually extract instead of always throwing yourself at the next hardest objective, but being able to save builds across comes with a downside. Typical rougelikes remove whatever insanity tins managed to build up over a run, so your next run is guaranteed to have some semblance of intended difficulty for at least the early levels. But in Hyper Light Breaker, you can immediately take that build in again, or even save it for a later attempt. I got my first boss kill due to a build I pieced together across multiple runs. (revolved around sending crit rate and through the roof, a perk that healed a small amount of non-red health for every crit landed, and the fastest attacking weapons available. Oh, and a perk that traded a third of my max health for a flat double damage increase.) I would’t say it was completely undeserved - I had fought the boss enough times to at least somewhat learn its patterns - but the boss dropped with my health bar still full when my last attempt barely got halfway. It feels like the game is pushing a loop of; clear out gear/loot on this seed -> run into boss arena with fodder gear to learn patterns -> swap to broken set to win -> repeat. And once the boss patterns have been memorized, an entire step gets cut out for the process. The only way to really counteract this I that I bc a see would be to _constantly_ be adding new bosses and enemies, so the players have new things to learn and will take advantage least a little bit of time before they wake into the arena and wipe the floor with the boss. Obviously the game is still in _very_ early stages, so there’s plenty of time for it develop and the devs to adjust. Regardless if this is addressed or not, I’ll fairly certain I’ll be dumping a good number of hours into this game.

I want your opinion on this, because my only worry is that runs might feel samey. I struggle to square the circle of having both enough variety within a run and between different runs. Since runs can be very long and the game wants to give you new stuff that isn't just what you have but with bigger numbers but if you see a lot of cool and interesting shit within a run you're probably going to run into the same things between runs. I'm not saying it's impossible look at games like caves of qud, dwarf fortress, literally any traditional rougelike new and old, those games have very very long long runs with tense make it or break it moments and manage to feel insanely different from run to run and within a run. But those games sacrifice simplicity of design with massive complex almost obtuse mechanics that harbor on simulations, and those sort of mechanics cannot work within a fast paced action game at least not directly in the combat. I love what they're doing here and like you said yourself trying to square the circle and trying something new is how genre defining pieces are created. I'll have to actually play the game now that it's in early access to give any more judgment but as someone who has already played the game for a bit, what do you think?
@RacesVideos
@RacesVideos 26 күн бұрын
hm, I think as of right now the runs aren't super different from one another, especially if you like to use the same weapon for another type. You can just technically grind out the same perks you want also. But it's just another example of something I just want to see grow with the game, with more stuff put into it it could definitely improve that replayability. I'll probably get a few days to a week of playable content out of this as is before I wait for a content update

My only problem with the game so far is the lack of variety. There's only 3 biomes, only (if im not mistaken) 5 random events, only 5 different bosses (at least that I've seen), the different structures on the map do appear often enough that you can get used to it as well. But it's a really good game and has a lot of potential! These are also very simple and safe updates to make imo. New structures, new enemies, new bosses, etc. Just more of the same will help a lot here

Feeling like u can die in every fight is a bad thing for a good player, because the only way a game can do that is punish you with things that are out of your control and that is frustating, once you can't improve your gameplay anymore the game shouldn't feel like a random slot machine of death. That ain't fun.

My comment from yesterday about how heart machine lied about the infinite amount of worlds and procedural terrain generation got either deleted or hidden. Did I type something wrong? If not, can you unhide it? I'd also like to add that they did actually mention it once, that the worlds weren't randomly generated in game, but instead are generated before release and then in the game files. Its somewhere on the heart machine tumblr. But you seriously can't expect players to find this when the game is advertised as having "infinite amount of worlds" where "you never see the same world twice" everywhere else.

sorry, I don't think your comment ever sent, no comments auto modded or hidden. I wouldn't hide anything like that either. It definitely feels weird, kinda like a white lie you know is going to be construed the way you think it is when you say it. Idk, while they're not technically wrong I feel like morally I have questions about it and it feels weird. Also this is a question more about Arc Games I guess since they handled marketing. (which btw is gearbox publishing since they renamed I believe)

@@RacesVideos I think that was my third comment that disappeared on your channel. KZbin is just being weird I guess. Btw, if you want all the info, on the official hyper light breaker discord (not heart machine discord) channel, there is a post in the ideas channel by me (called actual random worldgeneration), since at the time almost no one actually knew about it. An ex dev commented on it and cleared up some stuff. Mostly confirmed that in game terrain gen is not planned.

I don't think it makes much sense to look at "roguelites" as some reasonable agglomaration of "space", and consider every comparison within it reasonable. Roguelites, to me, are a slightly stronger definition than "minimalist design". It's more a design philosophy than it is is a "space" or genre. You could design a city-builder roguelite (Against the Storm) and something more similar to Hyper Light Breaker, and both would be valid "roguelites" - but they are almost incomparable. To say "Vampire Survivors is more what people want in easier roguelites" is like saying "I think people who dislike surrealistic paintings would be more interested in movies" - both are ultimately captured by the same base group, but they are constructively incomparable. You seem to take this as a basis for argumentation immediately. You compare Slay the Spire to HLB as if it means anything. Unless you want to make a very fundamental statement I think it does not.
@RacesVideos

Yeah so I think you're immediately discrediting what someone else is saying without giving yourself a chance to actually soak up the context and understand it, you're strangely projecting that I'm presenting a 'basis for argumentation' all without fully comprehending the thesis of the discussion I've put forth whatsoever, so I'd ask you to take a step back. The design philosophy of roguelites, at least to the average player or consumer, is about breaking down games and creating a more digestible, per-run, replayable experience, which I was hoping was understood. This is understood at least conceptually by many who consume a lot of roguelite content. I suppose it wasn't, but I fault myself for not presenting that basic notion properly in the video. In the same way your example, Against the Storm, could bring a new flavor to this base by introducing the advent of city building, HLB introduced, in my opinion, equally interesting mechanics and run design to the standard formula many roguelites follow that others could then build off of as a standard. Just like Slay the Spire has introduced genre defining characteristics, like I pointed out with the map that you see echoed amongst a good 50% of the strategy roguelikes out in the market, or Vampire Survivors which was so heavily copied it created a sub genre in the roguelite space in itself. The comparison is that A. They're roguelites, and B. they're influential in the space because of specific and innovative design decisions. So yes, it means something. And yes I think in context, comparing difficulty of one of the most popular roguelite styles or tropes in the world, Vampire Survivors screen wipe gameplay, to this game that I think is exceptionally different, is also a valid thing to bring up. If I, a consumer, saw the tag roguelite on the page how would I differentiate the experience from the other most popular roguelites that I enjoy that also share the same tag? I think it's an important part of this game's identity that it does not share with a lot of the genre it's settled itself in. Let people compare things. And I would encourage you to ask next time if you aren't fully grasping someone's point instead of insisting that they're misunderstood and what they're saying doesn't mean anything! It definitely can come off as rude and entitled! I'm not upset with you though, this served as a good way to present this point more thoroughly to others who may be confused. I'm not going to respond to you again if you insist whatever I'm saying is meaningless, have a good one!

@@RacesVideos I found this extremely painful to read. Why am I suddenly your mortal enemy and must I be humiliated at the cost of any reason or logic? I simply disagreed with your basis for comparison. There is a lot of irony in you claiming I refuse to take a step back with this rhetoric of "destroy the opponent at all costs necessary". Yes - almost everything you say here I understand and can be made a point for - but you did not do that. Yes, they are A, roguelites and B, they are influential. An integer is A a mathematical object, as is topological space, both are influential in their respective branches of mathematics, does that mean they are now open for immediate comparison? No. They certainly can be: if you provide the mediating framework to do so. You do not do this however. A very clear example of this to me is the statement "this might not be a game for people who are interested in the easier type of roguelites like Vampire Survivor". How does this differentiate from just saying "this game is harder than most games I played"? What justifies the confinement to roguelites here that sets up these comparisons? There is no "measure of distance", if that makes sense, besides abiding vaguely by the same philosophy.
@RacesVideos

The mediating framework between an apple and an orange is that they are fruit. And comparatively in this video, I'm talking about fruit. If you're a fruit enjoyer, and a new fruit was unleashed upon the world, why wouldn't I comment on how this new fruit isn't sweet like other fruit that people love like oranges? You're not my enemy, I reacted to what I think is reasonable considering your own actions, I simply told you the way in which you said what you said can definitely come off as rude, entitled, and dismissive for really no reason about a fun little game video and I elected to correct you since you elected to insert your opinion and attempt to correct me about something I'm not wrong about. I'm allowed to compare whatever I want frankly, and can do so with the tool of language, if you're unable to grasp whatever I choose to compare that is not fault I will have to bear. I do not enjoy this conversation though honestly, so I will now stop, but I figured I owed you this much. Again, have a good one.

@@RacesVideos But by your reasoning, why are you yourself not "entitled and rude"? You insert your own opinion and state you are correct, dismissing my perspective as pointless (almost literally in several sentences). My goal was not to dismiss your perspective, it was to simply say I disagree. In what context could I disagree with you where you wouldn't claim it is undermining you? Sure you are allowed to compare, I even understand the merit of the comparison very well: I think the same goes for your apples and oranges analogy. People indeed might gravitate toward different fruits and want to know how to classify them to their needs. My problem is not with that: it is the lack of a meaningful measure you focus on. Apples and oranges have meaningful attributes you can compare, much like you stated: you can compare the sweetness. But in that case you aren't focusing on fruits anymore. You are focusing on a measurable, and constructive attribute that happens to be inherent to fruits: their sweetness. You can of course choose to limit this comparison to just fruits as per the necessity of such a comparison (as you stated: people who enjoy fruits find this meaningful, I can agree there). But a lot of this video comes down to comparing arbitrary attributes in a "space" of fruits that are not valid simply because they are unitied in being fruits. What if I were to make the claim "Apples are better because they are spherical, whereas bananas are less sweet". They surely both are fruits, but the comparison does not make sense. There is no uniform measure between the things in the category just because they belong to that category. If you make sweeping statements like "they changed this" or "they changed that" it ultimately boils down almost entirely to how the viewer perceives this measure subjectively, which is not constructive by design (it's "generalization"). You do make a lot of what I perceive as constructive comparisons after watching the video a bit longer. I just wish that for some of the more sweeping statements there was more backing to the measure you apply - so it does not get lost in vague surface-level interpretation.
