All my PRs are from my early thirties, including 36:10 for 10k, a 1:20 half marathon and a 2:55 marathon. My current PRs are 49:07 for 10k and a 1:46 half. I’m 65.

My kids went off to college when I turned 50, I started training! Ended up setting 12 marathon PRs in a row and am now closing in on the covered sub 3 at the young age of 58. Now, my body has changed in the last couple years and strength training has become imperative, recovery takes longer, no more back to back harder efforts, etc. Thanks for the video!

I'm turning 61 in 2 days. PRs; 5k- 19:09 2023, 10k- 42:53 PR 2023, 15k- 1:04:09 March 2024 13.1- 1:30:42 October 2023 Marathon- 3:08:22 December 2023 Make recovery the most important part of your training and stay healthy! Running 55-70mpw without issue. Strength training, cross training and nutrition are all part of my plan. Hoping to go sub 3 in marathon this fall in Chicago.

@@jimoconnor8597 But was it on the same course? I ask because there's a goose on KZbin (Mark Philpott) spruiking about his results (which are quite lame) and telling everyone he's set a new PB for a particular distance, only thing is he changed the course which allowed him to run it faster.

Your 15km time is very good. To put this into perspective, I'm 52yo and I do a solid 14.1km cross country course (with some steady inclines) which I've PB'd in 58:58. I've done faster on a flat track but I don't care for my times on a flat track. Currently transitioning back to a marathon distance and I'm comfortably running a HM in 1:31:30 (non race prep'd or super shoes). So I'm hoping to maintain this pace right up to 35km in training and then with a pair of super shoes, being fully race prep'd and running with a pacer, I might go under 3H for the marathon.

I'm a 63-year-old runner. This video is one of your most helpful yet. It just reinforces the need to make a top priority of strength training. I haven't done so in the past, and my pace and performance have been declining since my mid-50s. Everything you're presenting makes sense.

So great to have found your channel with a focus on those of us longer in the tooth, as well as your more general and holistic advice. Wonderfully helpful to know how, why and when to train, given how much time it takes out of the limited spare capacity between work and other life commitments (ie, most of it!). Ps - age 53, running 4 years (but mainly first half of each year - will introduce consistency this year!). 5km c.25 mins, 10km 56mins, half 2:00:14.

5K - 19:26, 60 10K - 40:46, 60 Half - 1:31:26, 60 Marathon, 3:31:35, 66 I agree, less distance as we age. I used to do about 80K per week during a marathon build, now just over 65K.

I PB-ed a marathon by half an hour 4 weeks ago at age 56, with a 3:12:25 at Christchurch New Zealand. And I have to say that following everything suggested here over the last 18 months or so HAS DEFINITELY been the difference in my running. Thanks, Team Parry.

My fravourite strength training is TRX Suspension trainer. It works the muscle without straining the muscles that free weights tends to produce.

I'm 53M, runnign 2.5 years! 5k: 21:11 (Dec '23) 10k: 43:52 (Mar '23) 1/2: 1:48:55 (Mar '24) - set in a Z2 long run, targetting 1:3x later this year. Strength train 2 x with a light mobility session as well, run 5x around 55-65km a week. Garmin's currently trolling me saying I've a 19:38 5k in me!

Sometimes the Garmin prediction looked daunting to me. Now I have a Stryd wich predicts even faster times and I've reached all the goals, so it's really accurate. The difference is however Garmin predicts what you can do now. Stryd predicts more what you can do when you've done the training.

I’m a 55 year old, 30+ year mountain runner. In 2020 I set my PR at the Man Against Horse 25 mile mountain race, which I had set 17 years prior. In my 50s I’ve also set other personal bests in number of miles run and vertical feet run in a year, and I completed a very hard 100 miler in 2021. Everything in this video rings true, but admittedly I do need to do a complete day of rest. I’m usually doing something, even if it’s just a short bike ride or rock climbing session.

I'm a 71yr old fella, solid mesomorph, one thing I don't want is more muscle. I used to have a BMI of 30, but dropped 70lbs .I ran my first 16k in ten years yesterday, but during the week I don't run more than 8km twice or three times a week. My Garmin is telling me to back off. But I'm looking lustfully at my road bike cradled in the hallway. Though I'm nervous about falling off. I'm tanked today but my legs feel fine. I went for a brisk 3 block walk on waking, just to get my BG down before pricking my finger. So I just did a regular 90sec (proper toes to elbow) plank. Thanks for this.

That's some great advice. The one area I must improve on is strength training; I keep putting it off but I know it is the biggest constraint to me improving. My PR for the 5K is 17m 46s, but that was when I was 22. I'm now 60 and did a 21m 12s 5K last summer in the UK, without training for it as I was mainly doing Z2 running preparing for an Ultra. I prefer long distances now and am training for a 10K in 6 weeks and aiming for sub 49mins (I'm currently in Thailand and the temp is 35C so that may be optimistic), and then another 50K Ultra in September, aiming to break 5hr 30m.

And the only thing different I have done is add in a weights sessions 2 days a week for 25 minutes a day - for 6 months now . ( Monday and Wednesday) I run Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. Friday is a rest day

My 10k pb, 32:51, 15k pb, 50:30, HM pb, 1:13:03, and marathon pb, 2:43:51, are all from 1986 (except marathon, from 1984) are so far out of my reach that, at 65, I can't imagine even being within 25% these days. Perhaps you should clarify what you mean by a pb.

Gave up going for PR's when I turned 60. Pounding my body for 40 years between 20yrs of age and 60 was enough. I run to enjoy it now. (I'm 67).

I started running at 56 and I am still improving. I am hoping to beat my Marathon PB by about 50min on June 2nd in San Diego. It took me 3 marathons to finally be able to bring the Marathon in line with all the other PBs (5k, 10k and Half). Last October I ran a 1h49 Half and the week before a 49min 10k.

I'm 52yo. All I do is squats (and side leg raises, laying on my side). They work wonders. Pre-squats I was OK, but since doing squats I just feel so much more power and strength, especially over distance.

When I combine squats and the next day run, my knees hurt. I think it is too much for me to do both. I do weights for upper body!

I'm 58 yo and compeet in M55 on the World Championships Triathlon. I'm having 2 weeks build + 1 week recov, do some strenght (but not too much) and take a day off if I feel I'm not recovered from the training before. So... I have a training plan, but it's not the holly grail (anymore).

I'm with you, at 55 I find it extremely offensive when the media audio says over 50s then shows 70 year olds...Ive just run a 1:55 half on the weekend and am aiming for sub 1:45 by the of the year. Over 50 isn't mean retired and twilight years.

I completely agree. I'm 52yo and there's not one thing I can't do today that I wasn't achieving at 20yo. In fact, a 20yo me couldn't beat me now in a half-marathon/marathon. Still a sub-90 for the HM and still a BQ for the marathon. So putting a 50yo in the category of a 60yo or (especially) a 70yo is ridiculous. I reckon even at 60+ I'll still be achieving the same results I am today.

I believe they are talking about athletes who haven't reached their potential in their earlier years. I'm sure Steve ovett and Seb coe would find it tricky to improve on their Olympics times. However I am making massive improvements in my running at 59yo and I have run all my life. It's a choice to bush back and not allow yourselves to be coached or I could open you mind to the change and embrace all that help me grow. I,m not bellow anyone or above anyone but i can learn from everyone.

Hi Guys...so I was a national level powerlifter and love running....I had a 300kg squat, 310kg deadlift and 190kg bench press...the key here is....I'm a professional tennis coach by trade, been that way for 24 years, and I run every 2nd day....I weigh 101kg at 14% body fat...and have bettered my times every time I enter a powerlifting meet😅...so last year before nationals I did my fastest 5km, in 20 mins odd and my fastest 10km at 41 mins...I cannot emphasize enough how gym helps with explosive speed...I also take creatine and glutamine pre and post training with a protein shake for recovery... The thing is my dad owned a gym in a small town in kzn called howick....I always wanted to be a pro tennis player so at age 15 I was introduced to light gym...and thrashing all my schoolmates at tennis.. I was no better at tennis then tem but way stronger....Ill say it again...I cannot emphasize what strength training has done for me...I have never in my 46 years alive never been injured.

im 62 now and have just started running again after 10 years. i used to run twice a day when i was in my 20's 30', PB 10K 34mins. i am struggling at the moment with left achilles soreness and neuropathy in my left knee after having slipped disc and trapped nerve in my lower back. its tough getting old. im going to try and follow your drills to get some mobility back.

You can get faster as you get older. I'm looking forward to seeing Usain/ Bolt in his 50s breaking the Olympic world records .I don't think so.
