When Secret Soviet MiG Aces Fought US Sabres

In the skies over Korea at the height of the cold war, Soviet fighter aces secretly fought against the UN forces. Northwest Korea over the Yalu river, also known as Mig Alley is where most of these engagements occurred. The US pilots named these talented aviators "Honchos". The Head Honcho that patrolled over Mig Alley, was nicknamed "Casey Jones" or "Ol' Casey". Flying a MIG 15 bis with a special paint job, Casey Jones was none other than Soviet WW2 pilot Sergei Kramarenko.

I had the honour to research this and other topics of the Korean War with Russian historian Igor Seydov (I should better say that he did the brunt of the research, with some minor contributions from me) and American ones (Kenneth Werrell and Earl McGill). Regarding the aerial combat on 17 January 1952 that you portray at the end of the video, when Kramarenko hit a Sabre but was subsequently shot down, I think I can provide some names: the F-86E Kramarenko hit was the BuNo 50-636 flown by Major George V. Wendling, and was severely damaged, but survived to fight other battles till his final destruction on 13 April 1952 by another "Casey Jones" (MiG Ace Arkadiy Boytsov). The Sabre pilot who shot down Kramarenko was, most like, Major William Shaeffer of the 16 FIS, 51 FIW (the same unit than Wendling). I have only one complain: you failed to mention that Serguey Kramarenko was fired upon after ejecting and while was floating defenceless in the parachute, probably by Shaeffer. I cannot say whether Shaeffer was trying to murder him (Kramarenko sincerely believed this when Igor and I interviewed him back in 2007) , or was just shooting in his general direction trying to get some guncamera pics where the parachute would be clearly visible, to get credit for the MiG kill (as Werrell suggested me). All that I can say is that many other Soviet pilots suffered similar experiences, and no less than four of them were murdered while hanging defenceless in their chutes. Thanks for the extra info, we were unsure as to whether to include that scene or not tbh. As it was an unknown pilot on one side and a statement that was given at the height of the cold war. We didn't think it added anything to the story and detracted from the main story which was a bunch of brave men on both sides doing their job. So we included the facts we could corroborate from both books. Thanks again for the insight and it's amazing that you got to speak to the veterans.

I read several books of Larry Davis, Warren Thompson, Ken Werrell and most of the authors specialized in Korea, that brought a lot of personal accounts of Sabre crews (aces, MiG killers, wingmen, mechanics). Not a single mention of a MiG pilot shooting at a Sabre airmen hanging defenceless in his parachute. NONE.

True that, the all MiGs have big fuck-off 37mm and 23mm cannons with barely 200 rounds total. They only open fire when they're sure they'd hit. Even the modern MiG-29 and Su-27 only has 150 rounds for their 30mm cannons, although the computers makes up for it by pretty mich ensuring every burst is a hit.

@@pioneirohill8493 More range and better accuracy, a single hit will fuck up your airframe, and as i've said before, fire control computer has made it so that almost every shot is a hit, so the low ammo count doesn't affect it as much. Pardon me for using video game knowledge on this part but if you've played DCS, you'll know that 150 rounds is more than enough to destroy 3-4 fighters in a dogfight, or 5 if you're having a good day.

Much later general Kramarenko wrote a book "Against messers and sabres", were he mentioned this case. Btw, in Korea captain Kramarenko served in 176 air regiment, 324 division under comand kolonel Ivan Kozhedub.

Supposedly forced a soldier trying to capture him to take his cynaide pill, and escaped back to Britian to continue serving. Post ww2, he served in Vietnam flying F100s, F4s and other planes. He then was reowned for being the first person to break the sound barrier in level flight, flying the Bell X-1, while having a broken rib from a horse riding accident a week (or day) before.

My grandfather was on this war on North Korea’s side, he was a pilot, but in the naval bombers, not in Mig’s, in IL-4, I guess, I don’t remember purely, he died 16 years ago. He was lieutenant-colonel (подполковник) in American system of officer’s ranges an participated on WWII, on Japanese campaign in 1945 in Manchuria/Korea and in Korean War, but all live for everyone he was only “WWII veteran”, and not “Korean veteran”, because of secrecy of this information. In this war were a lot of soviet pilots, my grandfather told me that they speak in radio chat on korean language for disguise that on north korean side are soviet soldiers. But in some hot moments they started speaking russian and everybody in radio wave understands that he has battle with soviet pilots so sometimes US pilots gone away because soviet pilots have huge experience and were more professional than chinese or koreans pilots. Interesting that now I can find on comments people whose grandparents were on other side in this war and talk story from “the enemy side”

@@Serg1710 ВВС США только за "черный четверг" (12.04.51) потеряли 10% от всего парка б29 в Корее. 12 б29 и 4 истребителя если в цифрах, после этого массового применения б29 не было, а от идеи уничтожить аэродромы в Китае с которых вылетали истребители Кореи, Китая и СССР отказались. Так что роль миг 15 очень даже значима.

That pilot also published his memoirs: "Against Messerschmitts and Sabres, in the skies of two wars." The point was, that over Yalu migs had objective to take down B-29 bombers/F-80 and F-84, not Sabres, so that causes some misunderstanding. Mig-15 pilots from USSR had 3.4 KDR against entire UN air group (including US, Australia, RK and some others), but sabres had around 1.8 KDR with migs that were often piloted by chinese. Also take in accordance that soviet pilots were in minority (like 150 vs 2k US pilots). What was different, that 64th air fighter corps had a part of 176th regiment in it (soviet antagonist of JG52 in WW2), so american pilots faced much more skilled, but outnumbered enemy. Also visited US by invitation from US B-29 pilot and had a meet with US fighter pilots. Really interesting biography.

I would hardly say the Soviets were more skilled than the US pilots as the sabres had a favorable kill ratio over the MiGs. That said the Soviet pilots were absolutely better than the North Korean and Chinese pilots.

@@jacobdewey2053 Sabres had better kdr vs migs, but migs didn't go for Sabres, their task was to take out US bombers, not the Sabres. That is why migs carried low rof 37mm and Sabres carried 6x.50. Plus, Soviet pilots at least in 1951 were represented by the regiment that had only skilled pilots. Basically it was created to gather all best pilots in one regiment to counter JG52 during WW2.

The main problem is that the direct comparison of loss ratio between MiGs and Sabres is somewhat invalid as the main objective of the MiGs was to bring down American bombers which they did admirably. Also MiG-15's and Sabres were not the only aircraft used and lost in Korea. Also the statistics based on claims are most likely inaccurate due to inability or unwillingness to verify the figures during the battle or immediately after it, mistakes, double-counting and/or deliberate exaggeration of one side's wins and lowering of their losses - is a common and universal practice. One of the way to get more or less adequate figures is to analyze reports considering equipment write-offs and casualties reports, missed in action after all those years may be safely considered KIA, I think. P.S. I've watched a video today about German accounting of enemy tank kills, even the German High Command decided that kill claims should be divided by 2.

@Hyperborean Feelz the answer is mostly no, because the Soviet snipers had to prove their kills, at least the observers from other units/elements participating in action were to confirm the claim or some kind of trophy brought back like a dog tag, belt buckle or personal weapon to substantiate a confirmed kill". Still inaccuracies or ungrounded claims may have occured. In terms of tanks/aviation only equipment write-offs may serve as more or less accurate source of information. Or trophy teams reports in case of tanks. Don't know about Germans but Soviet trophy teams catalogued destroyed vehicles so that those would be brought for scrapping or put into service/storage (certain trophy models were used "until used up"). As for storage... A friend of mine told me he saw some Panthers kept "for a rainy day" in a warehouse lost in the middle of Russian Nowhere).

@Hyperborean Feelz during the battle of Kursk both sides claimed to destroy more tanks than the enemy had in their ranks. Sometimes such things happen when a tank was indeed knocked out (not a total loss) but was repaired quickly enough. As for Korea sometimes the aircraft were damaged very badly but they came back "on a wing and a prayer" and were considered destroyed by the enemy - in most cases the aircraft was of course written off in the aftermath but it also may have not been counted as a combat loss in that case.

The numbers he cited are the numbers according to recent research on the topic. I fail to see why that first point invalidates the comparison when there's no difference in loadout between anti-fighter and anti-bomber duty for the MiG's (or any aircraft from that period) and they likely still patrolled at the same height for either. It's not like the Vietnam war where the USAF losses include bomb-laden strike aircraft incapable of defending themselves. The MiG's were still on CAP missions and more than capable of responding to fighter threats. The US pilots were just superior enough to take the lead in the kill ratio by a decent margin.

My grandfather was a F-86 Sabres pilot in Korea. One of the stories he told was of him shooting down a MIG-15, that was piloted by a Russian. Another great video, I can't see the next one.

Respect your grandfather! My grandfather was a soviet pilot in WW2. He managed to participate in the bombing of Berlin in the summer of 1941. So he fought until the end of the war and survived. Did you know that despite the retreat of the Soviet army in the summer of 1941, Soviet pilots bombed Berlin several times! You can imagine how surprised the Germans were!

In September 1958, a sidewinder missle got lodged into the side of a MiG-17 after failing to detonate, giving the Soviet Union access to our most effective missile at the time. Not long after, the Chinese captured an air base in Korea and getting their hands on some AIM-9's, and the Soviets persuaded them to hand one over. The USSR reverse engineered these two examples to produce the K-13 (NATO designation: AA-2) which entered service in 1961. The degree of commonality between the two missiles was so close that subsequent examinations of K-13 missiles captured by NATO forces showed that parts from an AIM-9 could be interchanged with parts from a K-13 and either combination would still work.

Another beautiful video from you guys! AMAZING work as always! John Luther "Casey" Jones was a railroad engineer for the Illinois Central railroad, who died in the early morning of April 30, 1900. His steam-powered mail train had been rolling in a heavy rainstorm, and he rumbled into the area of Vaughan, Mississippi where the rear marker lights of another stalled train ahead was spotted by Jones' fireman, Simeon T. Webb. Casey ordered Webb to jump from the train, as he slammed on the brakes. He managed to slow the train down to 35MPH before plowing into the rear of the stalled freight train. Jones was the only causality, as he had sacrificed himself to save the people. A true hero! And it was probably why the leader was named Casey Jones. An experienced man who wasn't shy to make it known to everybody around. A bold man with tricks up his sleeve. Gotta love that humorous aspect from a past time. Thank you for the video, keep it up!

Great video! His skill is even more impressive, considering the MiG-15s all-cannon armament had only enough ammo for a couple seconds' consecutive firing. With a slow rate of fire, your aim had to be dead-on. However, if you hit, you were almost guaranteed a kill.

The MiG was armed with three cannons - heavier shells and longer range than the 6 x .50 calibre MG's of the Sabre. However, the MiG's gunsight was poor (the Sabre's was little better) and also the three cannon were very slow firing, the MiG having been designed as a high altitude strategic bomber interceptor (a large and steady target). Because the cannon only fired a few rounds per second, the chance of getting a hit on a violently manouvering Sabre was very low. The Sabre's own MG's didn't have such a great range or stopping power, but they had more seconds worth of firing (almost twice the MiG's, I believe) and also as they sprayed MG shells all over hte place there was a far greater chance of hitting a MiG, even if you didn't bring it down first time. MiG pilots tended to show their inexperience by the moment they were first hit, they tended to dive for the deck, a fatal error as the Sabre could actually out-dive the MiG (conversely, the MiG could both out-climb the Sabre and also fly at a higher altitude, but once combat was joined very few MiG pilots had the know-how to get the most from their planes; unless you had a very good Russian at the controls.

The Mig 15 only had a normal gunsight. The Sabre had a radar guided gun sight which took into account lead and stuff like that. Took a lot of the guess work when firing at the enemy. With such a low firing rate and very limited amount of ammunition and also there are just 3 of them, it is like trying to shoot a bird with a bolt action .22. Sure the bird will explode if you hit it but what are the chances of actually hitting it? Not so good. On the other hand, the Sabres SIX .50 caliber guns that fire at a much higher rate and has a good amount of ammunition, it is like trying to shoot a bird with a shot gun. It may not explode when you hit it but it will go down non the less. Much better chance of hitting it. So choose your poison.

@@75offensivetackle38 True, but if you read the memoirs and the records of the USAAF Sabre pilots, they often asked for the radar-guided gun-sight to be taken off their planes, as they felt it did not work properly and wanted to save as much weight as possible in order to dogfight better with the more agile MiG's. At least one leading Sabre pilot, no less than Frances 'Gabby' Gabreski, invented the 'gum sight', vowing that he would rather sight his guns using a wad of gum on his windshield rather than the new-fangled radar-guided sight!

The Russians do name their planes, It's just not very used often. The Americans name them because it's easier to address them that way (Also suits the NATO code) same way for the russian aircrafts

NATO names for Russian planes. Names starting with F are for fighters, B for bombers, etc.

We do name them, it's just faster for us to say "MiG" or "A-10" than it is to say, for example, "Warthog". The most famous one however is the Su-25 "Grach" (Rook, meaning a bird), simply because it's just as fast to say as Su-25, maybe even faster.
