I was homeless at 19 years old. I got caught shoplifting a toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, and a hairbrush. I was arrested and taken into the precinct.. while I was going through the process there, I ended up striking up a conversation with a black female officer.. She was asking me why I felt the need to shoplift and how I ended up in this type of a situation at only 19 years old. About an hour before I got released she came over to the holding cell where I was at and she slipped me two $20 bills and told me to go get the toiletries that I needed. I'll be 32 in December and her kind act has always stuck with me. That meant so so much to me in such a dark time in my life.

There's people who steal for selfish needs and people who steal to survive. There's always resources for when people need it but people never think to ask. There's food banks, churches, police stations, shelters, and many other places that are there to help people. I work for a food bank and we used to make bags of food and hygiene products for people begging and 9/10 said no they wanted money instead and unfortunately we stopped doing that because of how many refused

Similar but not the same situation with me. A few times a good samaritan lent me a hand up. I always appreciated it and try to pay it forward whenever I can. But...as in another comment here, I refuse to help people begging on the street for that same reason. They do not want items, they want money. And most times it's for alcohol, drugs, or cigarettes. Not all the time but most. For God's sake, you are begging on the street or corner, you really arent in a position to be picky or choosy. Take what you are given and be glad you have someone that gave you the time of day and thought about you. To be honest, I dont even know why I went off on this rant because none of these people that are meant to read this, will. But thank you for listening, whoever you are that is reading this.

All law enforcement officers are not the same. There are some really great, compassionate officers and some that have the wrong motives. My Dad was one of the good ones; retired, still living. He would buy jackets, hats, gloves at Wal-mart and give them to people released from jail in freezing temps that had been arrested in summer months and he knew they had nowhere to go. He would take some to Waffle House for a cup of coffee and a meal, took a few to the nearest bus stop and hour away after he got off-duty on his personal time in his personal vehicle. It's funny, I meet people all the time that had one or multiple run-ins with him and they all say he was so good to them when he didn't have to be and others wouldn't have been. He truly saw his job as serving his community and the people in it and sometimes that meant being kind to those some might not feel deserved it.
@StephenButlerOne6 ай бұрын
That sounds like the days when officers had areas that they was assigned to work all the time. This type of policing is what is missing now. Today it's a 'then vs us' relationship. Back then a policeman could be respected in his community for doing his job as they could grow a relationship, as long as they was fair, and respectful, the people breaking crime would respect they got nicked. Also there was officers who would use the situation to be bent as hell because they could use the relationship built for their own gain. It's probably because of this second bunch that that form of policing was scrapped. But now instead of some areas disliking or distrusting cops, almost everyone does. Ad you never see one when you need one. And when you do see one you get the feeling they are trying to fulfill a quota and pin something on you. I doubt there are official quatas to full, but I suspect, the police with the better figures get promoted more than the fairer cops that don't produce the figures, but teach people a life lesson in second chances, respect and consequence of actions. You learn a lot more from that, than you do a ticket.

This summer my brother had to go to San Francisco. He stopped in a drug store to purchase something and noticed a police officer standing near the cash register. He looked around and saw people shoplifting - just filling up their baskets and walking out. When he asked the police officer why he was letting all these shoplifters steal, the cop told him that per the Governor people can shoplift up to $1,000 without being arrested. Apparently, the courts were overfilled with "petty" cases of shoplifting that it wasn't worth prosecuting them. My brother then asked, "So you mean I can just walk out of here with this item and you won't stop me?" The officer said, "Yep. You can steal up to $1,000 but if you go over that, I'm arresting you." My brother paid for his item, but was absolutely floored by what he had seen and heard.

@@djjaysky9071 You don't need soft DA's if the police aren't doing their job properly. Take the first video, for example. Notice the cop never says "You're under arrest", he simply walks in, says "we can go in here and talk" and then proceeds to tackle the man? That's not proper procedure. An officer cannot simply tackle a citizen without informing them that they're being arrested. Everything that happened to him after that is inadmissible because the cop screwed up the arrest. Without a lawful arrest, there is no lawful search, and all the evidence is inadmissible. The DA has to drop the charges because there is no admissible evidence on which to convict them. Same with his buddy. The cop asks the employee if he wants the guy trespassed while he's already inside, and when the employee says "yes" he arrests him for trespassing. This time he did specifically state that he was being arrested. The problem is that in order for a criminal trespass charge to be issued, the person must be given a reasonable opportunity to leave after being asked. He was not afforded the opportunity to leave, thus, the arrest for trespassing wasn't lawful, and without a lawful arrest, there is no lawful search, so again, all the evidence is inadmissible due to an unlawful search so the DA has to drop the charges.
