I have a set of Walmart Innova discs, destroyer, beast, teebird, etc. I played with them for over 10yrs. Just casual rounds with my in-laws on the weekend, so I never delved into the world of disc stabilitys and plastic types. I turned 40 a couple of years ago and decided to make disc golf my sport. Being over the hill and out of shape left me this one last sport that I could work and improve skill at. My trusty Walmart discs started flying super unpredictable. A new disc store opened up in my town and the owner flexed his knowledge of what my game was doing. I was improving skill, playing more, and my discs were worn out. That's when I started watching Robbie C, and eventually In the Bag. After a year of buying one disc every two weeks (pay day, baby) I have a solid bag with many shot shapes, and gorgeous plastics. So not only have I built skill, but knowledge and confidence as well. Throwing the best DG of my life and feeling healthier for it. Thanks Robbie!

I tend to agree with this theory on flight numbers. Every disc I have ever thrown in champion plastic has flown more stable than the flight numbers indicate and tends to stay that way until you've hit about 100 trees before flying as advertised. Star/Gstar etc tend to fly true to numbers after a few dozen tree hits, while the likes of DX plastic are perfect after hitting 1 tree and then become less stable than advertised. Ultimately if you find a disc that flies just right, don't lose it, bc replacing it is a PIA

After watching this video I turned around and looked inside my bag and immediately noticed that the only 2 discs that look war-torn and beat in are my Star Wraith and Dx Leopard. I've had both discs for over 10 years now and they are without a doubt my go-to discs for driving out in the open and for the nice tight wood shots. I don't typically worry about losing them because they're incredibly reliable, but now I'm considering getting new ones with there being a few tournaments coming up that I want to play in! Great video and great rock/boulder analogy!

It doesn't turn any more than when it was new, but the fade is all gone. It ends completely straight and has for a while now. It's a laser.

Same! I had a Star Wraith in my bag that was my ride or die driver in my bag for over a year, and it eventually beat in to a dead straight flight with hardly any fade. I legitimately mourned it when I lost it, went out the next day and bought 2 Star Wraiths that will hopefully one day be similar to it. Once I get one seasoned right, I'll be cycling it like Robbie talked about. OG Star Wraith, if you're out there, I miss you.

I’ve been between working with minimal molds and cycling and finding “fresh” plastic that fits the shots I want in the bag.. I love teebirds and have a seasoned one that’s taken years to beat in and I can’t replace it. Fairly recently I traded out my least stable teebirds for leopards and tl’s and have way more confidence and less fear of losing my “precious child”. Also replaced my stack of wraiths for shrykes and destroyers in different plastics and trust the discs way more.

My most beat in disc is a dynamic discs marshal. It was my putting putter when I first started and it no longer flies like it should. It’s the straightest flyer in my bag and it’s great off the tee. It’s slightly puddle top and has a ton of dings on the edges. I’ve had hell replacing it with a new putting putter though. I’ve landed on the lat64 pure. I haven’t put in enough time just yet with the pure, so it’s subject to change.

I have a Pro Teebird with a custom dye of Shuckle (my favorite pokemon). I did the dye myself, and the disc is the longest bagged disc I have by a wide margin. The problem I have is my emotional attachment to this disc, having so many great shots with it, and it flies nowhere near a Teebird at this point (more like a 7/6/-3/1). It's been mostly sidelined for a stock S-Line FD, but still don't have the fortitude to take it out of the bag and hang it on the wall where it belongs. Crazy how much we can love inanimate objects.

FD2. I already have a new one in the bag getting seasoned and a couple back ups. OOP so at some point I will run out. Also my K1 Berg which I use a LOT. Rock and Boulder analogy was super solid (I make myself laugh haha). Only thing that would have made it better was adding in some kind of “chiseling a gargoyle” element to relate to crafting the perfect griffin disc. I’m very intrigued by the thought process of the flight numbers being what the manufacturer plans on the disc becoming, opposed to what it flies like new. I have some discs that definitely seem to fly that way (primarily stable to understandable discs). However, it seems like the discs with more extreme stability ratings (on either side of the spectrum) seem to typically fly truer to the numbers off the shelf. That might just be my experience, but certainly an interesting thought experiment!

I can't tell I have an opto pure that I've been throwing now for a while and it's definitely flippy but sometimes it's just too flippy and a bit unpredictable like I can give it like 30° 40° of hyzer and Itll flip up right over turn and burn, with a little bit of wind roll. I was hoping it would be a straight flying disc not an understable disc. Cause 3 3 -1 1 and in opto but nope

I spent many many months learning how to throw drivers properly before attempting to throw putters for distance. For me it worked out though. I think the takeaway is whether you start with putters or drivers, the important thing is to circle back around and focus in on both. Being able to throw slow, flat and anhyzer putters accurately opens up a lot of windows just like a forehand does.
@friedscavlegs5109 Жыл бұрын
Start with putters. If you can't get a putter to 250 you won't get a driver much further (and less accurately).

When I’m at a shop. I first look for flight #s on a specific flight I want. and then I pick up the disc and judge how stable it will be depending on the contour of the wing. I think people should understand this before anything else when trying to pick out a disc
@sec54321 Жыл бұрын
I agree, but this can also lead you to not fully giving a disc its chance. I recently picked up a friend’s disc and thought “wow, this thing has got to be super flippy” and was terribly wrong. Sometimes they can fool you 😂
@Exsteeler Жыл бұрын
@@sec54321 I feel like that’s a case a small percentage of the time. I’ve experienced the same thing. When a flippy # disc is stable. the plastic & how much torque your putting on the disc will also decide the stability. Some discs are flippy at 250 feet of power and some discs are flippy at 450 feet of power. All depends on the player.

I still work on different approaches etc but I learn the disc itself for me and my style not the other way around.
@kieronmckay4276 Жыл бұрын
I think people get frustrated with disc flight numbers, because they don't actually know how much the disc weight makes a difference. They hear pros throw max weight, so they throw max weight, or they don't even know pro disc golf is a thing and walk up to a disc golf section in a sports store or disc golf store wall of discs and buy the coolest looking stamped stable disc not particularly noticing or caring about the weight...which leads them to buying a more stable version of a disc than the numbers would suggest for their arm speed. A 150g Star Destroyer will fly coooommmmpleeeetely differently than a 175g Star Destroyer. The numbers are the same, the flight characteristics and arm speed it takes to get the disc to an optimal flight are literally night and day. And on the other end of the spectrum with say a very understable mold, a 150g Mamba (11, 6, -5, 1) and one of the most understable discs on the market will flip much faster and much harder than a 175g Mamba which for most players will actually be net-net stable or straight flying. There are actually alot of variables to "what should a disc fly like" and most of them aren't actually well understood by the vast majority of players, and weight is a huge one.
