I have to disagree about not planting garlic in a raised bed because of the cold and frost... I live in Quebec and probably like Saskatchewan our frost line in the ground over the winter is at 4 feet. Doesn't matter how deep you plant the cloves, they are going to freeze. We have dug up frozen water pipes in the past that were below 4 feet.... only difference in a raised bed is whether that bed is sitting on the ground, or elevated. Elevated beds will most often kill the clove, because it thaws and re-freezes quite often compared to garden beds in the ground or raised bed sitting on the ground. Have a great day 😊

I live in N. California (zone 9b). When I used to buy garlic heads, if they started to sprout I took them to the yard and stuck the cloves in the ground in the flower beds. They lived, died, or thrived. Almost every time they thrived. When I needed garlic I'd go out and pull one up. Sometimes it would be one giant clove that was slightly mild, most times it would be a head and I'd clean it and take it in the house. I did this year around. It got cared for along with the flowers. If a scape came up I whacked it off and cooked it in a stir fry. It fit in just fine with the flowers.

I love growing garlic, so I was devastated that my 36 cloves didn't come up this year (actually, one survived!) They were mush! Here in my zone 5 garden I've usually planted garlic in early November. However a freak and remaining snowfall last Nov 4th foiled those seasonal plans. However (#2).....bulbs that languished and (I thought) died in the heat dome of 2021 came to life and I had a fair sized crop of smallish garlic heads appear. Bonus! I'll aim for last week of Oct. this year. You have huge garlic heads/bulbs, Ashley.

There is a reason for that! The bigger the initial clove the bigger the garlic harvest

I live in NH zone 5b. Two years ago I planted Oct.15th and hardly any tips came up before Spring, great harvest too. The next year I planted Oct. 15th again but the Fall was so warm I had tips grow 4-5 inches but amazingly they still did excellent. They didn't look good at all in the Spring, long yellow sad leaves but they bounced back just fine. This Fall I waited until nearly November and I think that's my sweet spot. I haven't seen any above ground growth but I know the soil isn't frozen yet either so that's good. Days are above freezing but plenty of nights in the 20's. I plant 4-5 inches deep too, seems weird but they do very well so I'm not changing that part. I gad planted 160 cloves last Fall and all but three came up-most of them in ground but one raised bed I added.

We can get very narrow windows here to plant with the swings in the temps late in the season. Remember once it had been wet, too warm, and then the temps dove. Had to mud them in, in sleet, and by the time I was done in the dark, but I got 'em in. I put a bit of straw or leaves over them now and cover the whole area with 4 mil clear plastic. It's saved alot of loss to heaving and getting 90+% germination.
