If you live along the gulf coast and in Tx, they (the Ruby-throats) may make a super brief appearance in early spring, but they don’t stay for long and go up north to Canada and to north eastern states to have babies during the spring and early summer. The actual best time to put up feeders if you live in Texas and the gulf coast is in early August through September, as they need the nectar to make their southern journey migration across the gulf down to Mexico. Also, I tie red and white pin stripe ribbons (very showy to them) around my feeder to attract new hummers or to signal a new feeder location, as they will definitely come to investigate. California is a different ball game and they are lucky enough to have some species of hummingbirds year round.

My hummingbirds started showing up mid March here in Orlando, Florida. They are the ruby throated variety.

Is, this LADY for real ? She, must be spending a fortune on just sugar alone !! This, is a full time job. Then, she has to go around and collect all the feeders , sterilize them, refill them all, replace any that got damaged. Go, around the neighborhood checking and replacing them !! Cook,up more nectar!!! This, is 💭 she does it the natural way !!! Does, anyone offer her help or donations formally her ? You, all should !! What , a blessing to you all !!!!

Your chart link is an error, isn't found FYI. Hi! I've already put mine up the beginning of this week. I've read up on hummingbirds over the years. Only added a little bit of food. Clean it out every 3rd or 4th day. I will have plants hanging by it when those are available for purchase. Plus I bought a swing for them this year! 🥰 Happy Easter 🙌

I have a lot of hummingbird plants "Bottle Brush Bush, Firecracker, Hummingbird Bush, Hibiscus, Petunias, etc." I have seen three hummingbirds - they love my flowers & perch. However, they do not drink from my hummingbird feeders { 2 of them}. I change the water every 2 days {central Florida heat}. Do you have any suggestions?

I see that is been a while and nobody has replied to your question.... idk if you are still struggling with them not visiting your feeders, but my suggestion would be to make your sugar water sweeter. I came across a study done a few years back that showed that using a 1:3 ratio (instead of the commonly recommended 1:4 ratio) more closely mimics what they get from flowers. Of course, being a gardener, I love that you have provided them natural nectar sources and I hope you get to enjoy watching their antics as they visit your plants as well !

I think if you’re in south Texas you can leave them year round. Here in the sacramento valley (similar zone) we have a species that never really leaves (black billed) so my feeders are up year round.

What is your favorite recipe for the feeders?

4:1 water to sugar so 1 cup of sugar to 4 cups of water. Or 1/4 cup sugar to 1 cup for smaller batches. No dye or anything else added. Can keep in fridge for up to 2 weeks. Change feed every 2-3 days and more often if really hot out

I was told you should use raw cane sugar none of that stripped unnatural bleached stuff.

Yes, Nebraska for the most part does not have hummingbirds. The western border fall slightly within the range of the ruby throat
