Thank you - straight to the point and simple video. No talking about your dog, the weather and what you are having for dinner!! Update - plant re-potted and it is looking much much happier. One question. I had to go up by 2" and now very worried it's too big. It's not been re-potted since purchased from a supermarket (the pot it came in was very small?)

Hi, I've just separated my four cheese plants into one pot, they were ones that weren't getting looked after by the shops I bought them from. I've separated all of them and faced them to the light. It's going to take a while before they will train properly against the pole but they will get there. One of them had two plants but one had root rot so I ended up with one, it's growing beautiful but now I've supported it with a piece of strong pole I just have to wait until I can train it. I am so grateful for your videos and advice they are amazing and very educational, thankyou. It took nearly two hours to get the large plant attached to the pole I bought but I know it's a lot better and it will be a lot better with time, none of the plants have damaged leaves so now it just a matter of time and patience. 🍀🐞.

I also have mine to re-pot, I’ve had it about 25 years and it was my Great Grans before I got it, so it’s a good 30 years old! New leaves 🍃 on it just now, but lots of dried up long roots that need removed, the top half looks like it’s died off but the bottom half is still growing, so hoping that a nice re-pot with a good compost and some food for it makes it thrive again, It was once about 2-3m high, I had to tie it all up using wire to a hook in my ceiling as it was so heavy, Wish me luck, it’s very sentimental to me and my daughter is after some cuttings so it’d be lovely if she had a part of the plant 🪴 as she’s 28 so it’s probably Older than her but it’d mean than she has part of something which has been in my house and life for nearly all her life and some Baby plants 🌱 would just make me happy and it would be another generation of the plant to another generation of my family, Great story to tell 😁🪴💖 I’ll come back and let you know how I get on, Hope your repotting went well 👍🏻🪴

Hi, Lee! My name is Frieda (free-dah). I found your videos today & began watching & I'm hooked already! I've watched 4 or 5 on Monsteras b/c I have a pot of babies I ordered several months ago & wanted to see what to look forward to! I am working on finding the right lighting & just repotted them from the 4 in delivery pot a month ago. I had the new pot about a foot from a south-southwest window, no sheers just spiderweb filtering the light! (My house is surrounded by woods!! Approx 355°!) This week I moved the pot to approx 2-2.5 ft away b/c leaves were turning yellow. Mostly the smaller leaves. I wish I knew how to attach a picture so what I'm rambling here would make more sense to you!! I seem to remember that the new leaves come from the front of the stem & the arial roots from the back. If I'm correct, the 5 largest stems are all facing the same direction, & there are 2 new ones coming out of the soil, too small for me to tell for sure!! It is now dusky dark & I have little artificial light in this side of the room & I don't see well in dim light. Old eyes! (I'm 66) So I have a total of 7 stems in what I think is a 6 in pot, but they are all congregated in the center. Should I leave them alone for the Fall & Winter & separate them in the Spring? That terrifies me! I'm afraid I will kill it as I have most of my succulents & hoyas!! I even killed my jade plant after a whole year! I also have a couple of rats I can't catch which came in from the woods to cool off & now refuse to leave! They have eaten a lot of my plants! At least 2 feet of a pothos that was hanging down so prettily!! 😡🤬(I only cuss w/ this emoticon!) Anywaaaay...I will continue to watch your videos to see what all you have! Thank you so much! OBTW, in case it helps you decide what I need to know, I live in NW GA, almost on the TN-GA State Line & summers are hot & muggy, bright sun most days. My bedroom has stayed above 80° since May & got into the low 90's for a week or more...poor a/c. Most of my few remaining plants are in here. Is that too hot? It got down to 59° in the Winter. Are those Temps compatible for Monstera? Oh yeah, mine are deliciosa. Thank you again!
@KillThisPlant
@KillThisPlant 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the message Frieda. And sorry about the rats! I might wait until the spring to do any planting. Usually yellowing leaves, lower leaves, are completely normal. As long as it's not so rapid that the yellowing is moving its way up the stem to affect your larger leaves. It could be a watering issue. Are you adjusting your watering schedule due to lower light and lower temperatures? Monstera can handle temps around 55° I wouldn't put them much lower than that.

by repotting when the medium is dry, you're only adding to the stress that the plant will already be subject to from the repot. I always like to make sure I've watered the plant 24hrs before I perform the repot

@KillThisPlant
@KillThisPlant Жыл бұрын
Yes and no. If the plant was healthy to begin with, you used a well draining soil, and went up an appropriate pot size it might not droop. Extended drooping can be an indicator that the roots are too wet, (most common beginner error) or too dry.

Hi Lee! I was wondering how I should go about repotting my grown monstera cuttings. The cuttings were given to me by a friend, however the stems are very short at the bottom, and there hasn’t been much stem growth. The stems are about 2 inches, so when I go to repot them, the stems are so short that they won’t stabilize, and the roots will be a bit exposed at the top, and I’ve been told not to bury the stems? If I place the stems at an angle where the Stems are sideways and the roots are buried, the stems and leaves are so heavy that it can’t support itself. How much is it okay to cover the bottom of a monsteras stem when repotting? I had them pretty much buried until my monstera could somewhat stand on its own.

Question RE: time to maturity. I know there are multiple factors involved, like light, soil, humidity, strength of plant, etc., but I'm curious, just for a guideline: in your experience, how long does a baby monstera with juvenile leaves take to mature into its fully-fenestrated adult self? And is there much lag time between outer-edge fenestrations and midrib-adjacent hole fenestrations, that you've noticed? Also, is it true what they say about "if you want your Monstera to grow faster, give its roots lots of room to grow & keep up-potting before it's fully filled its current pot"? Feels like a recipe for root rot, but that might just be given my "drench it and forget it" watering style. Thanks!
@KillThisPlant
@KillThisPlant 2 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure if I could give you an accurate statement like "your plant from seed should produce 6 leaves and after that you should have your first fenestration". I think doing that creates an atmosphere where what would normally just be impatience, is now being viewed as poor plant care. I would just continue to focus on -are my leaves getting bigger each new leaf -am I giving this as much light as I can (but not at the expense of making my living space worse for me eg. Moving furniture, blocking spaces I need to use to live) -am I fertilizing As for the pot size, when roots have less space to grow, plant growth slows down. Giving a huge amount of space isn't necessarily the answers. But repotting when the plant needs it will be helpful.

do you water your monstera like this every time you water ? or only for repotting ? i watered like this only once and it caused root rot so i’m scared to water like this again .
@KillThisPlant
@KillThisPlant 3 жыл бұрын
Good question. When it comes to watering you have to have a good understanding of your soil type and how much space the roots take up. For this plant I knew it was mostly roots, I have a well draining soil, and I was only going up 1" in pot size. So I could get away with watering it so heavily. Other plants with heavier soil with less developed roots I can't do this. And it could cause overwatering. This is something that comes with practice and a bit of guess work.

How many Monsteras do you have on that single pot? I am a little hesitant in combining multiple Monsteras in one. I actually have two pots both with two Monsteras each. Can you please advise me on this? They are all juvenile, by the way. Around 8 months old. Thank you.

I think there were 5 vines in that pot. I find my sweet spot is 2 plants in the same pot but it depends on the size of the cuttings and the look you're going for. Smaller plants tend to look better with 3-4 cuttings for more of a bush look. Larger cuttings are better for 1 or 2 and are much easier to manage.

Why don’t you reuse the old soil?

You can if you want to. For me it depends on what my medium is and what my fertilizer routine is.

will it kill the plant if i cut away some of the long roots?

Mostly likely not but you want to make sure you don't cut away too much. You could damage the plant/send it into shock.
