When I told people that African cichlids should poop loose and wet. I was shut down and told I was wrong. I’m glad you actually pointed that out because so many people and you wouldn’t believe how many do not realise that the poop should not be solid.

@@QuebecCichlides i do see solid poops coming out from my cichlids. It doesn't polute the sands as much as the pleco poop does. Is this really a major concern? I've made my own food for them, but they didn't end up liking it. I stuck to what they like which are northfin pellets, lettuce, and bloodworms on a bi-weekly basis. What are your thoughts here? Thanks

Also how to manufacturers bottle beneficial bacteria, when bacteria need oxygen and can die off without oxygen for 24 hours in a canister filter during power cuts?
@QuebecCichlides3 жыл бұрын
The bottles you buy aren't "beneficial bacteria" but actually "beneficial bacteria enhancers". They help the bacteria proliferate.

Thanks again Richelle! I have a question. When I used to keep cichlids, years ago, I used common gravel but now I've bought crushed coral "sand" (2-3 mm). I'm a little scared - how do I avoid sand-pocket bombs and how do I make sure to not siphon the sand out. This may sound ridiculous but do you think you could show the right way to do it?
@QuebecCichlides3 жыл бұрын

My substrate is very fine similar to the end of this video. I do use artificial plants. It is hard to syphon so I put filter floss in my syphon tube and that seems to do the trick to avoid sucking up the substrate. Do you see any issues with this?
@QuebecCichlides3 жыл бұрын
Very clever! If it works, I don't see any problems with that. I just pinch the tube to avoid losing too much substrate
@thepurpletortoise57943 жыл бұрын
Surely then the poops don’t go up the siphon?
@jeffcarpenter63063 жыл бұрын
@@thepurpletortoise5794 correct, but it gets caught up in the filter floss. I use a syphon that hooks to my faucet and have a lot of suction. thanks for you comment.

When I used to have 2.5-3” (5-7cm) of fine (not sand) substrate without plants I would get a terrible sulphur smell if I didn’t thoroughly clean the gravel often enough. As in months of no vacuuming. I have since learned most fish only tanks do much better with 1-2cm of gravel or sand. With live plants or eartheaters, feel free to go deeper. Do mbuna dig very much? Most shellies could open up a construction business.
