I don’t think Palpatine was saying that Thrawn or Tarkin were superior to Vader, but that there is no other capable people in the empire on their level aside from Bader, who has his own plans as a dark lord of the sith rather than just a tool of the empire

Poor vader...just of joining the dark side out of love , to save the ones dear to him was a positive...still...love/ hate is two sides of the same stick....but once he acquired power from his dark energies it turned him into a power hungry person. Once he discovered Luke, he seen his ability to overthrow his very powerful master,...sidious only had the sith lightning which he couldn't deflect long enough....due to his cybernetics, and electrical life support. Thus learning sidious deception on him and his son Vaders love for his son not sharing the same fate as himself freed his selfish malice and hate , overcoming the dark side.....redeeming his will and changing his connection from the dark side back to the light.

in the new storyline he shows up during Star Wars Rebels which takes place before episode 4. At the end of the show he gets trapped in parts unknown. Although The Mandalorian teased his return in Season 2.

He didn't took thrawn n tarkin as favorites here.What he propably meant is them to b perfect choices cuz so he wouldn't have to interrupt vaders search for luke.-personally i think thrawn indeed is a better strategist but vader isn't much worse plus has extreme value as active fighter himself.The way his pilotskills are presented often-him alone is same effective as the 72 tie's thrwn's cimera can spit out,4 example.

Vader wasn’t appart of the Emperial military. Why would Palpatine even consider using a lord of the Sith for such a low task as hunting down rebels. That must be pretty clear with the last scene of Vader’s in Rogue One. Vader and Palpatine were more concerned with real threats and possible Jedi still left that might destroy them.

if i were to compare vader, thrawn, and tarkin to medieval weaponry vader would be a club. a very brutish weapon. tarking would be a broadsword. definitely a more heavy handed weapon but not nearly as brutish as a club/axe. thrawn would be a rapier, a weapon of finesse.

Sorry but you missused the word. "Vader inferior tactically to thrawn". What you were thinking is strategicaly. Tactically is IN the battlefield, not supervising it (STRATEGY) and on that scenario well. Vader is far superior by sheer personal power.

Tarkin failed due to overconfidence in the Death Star. Thrawn failed due to overconfidence in his shielded TIE fleet. Both Thrawn and Tarkin thought their constructs could out maneuver the force. Palpatine believed he could control the force. Vader was pretty much along for the ride...in that sense he really wasn't any better than Anakin tbh.🤷
