Ian Chappell is a revered guy but this is his brother GREG CHAPPELL who everybody hates.

Greg Chappells stint as Indian coach was a huge drama the whole time. I think he struggled with the cultural differences in the way Indian cricket was run. It started with when Ganguly asked him whether they should pick Yuvraj or Kaif to bat at number 6, and his response was I think you should play the best team and best team looking at the future which means playing both of them and dropping yourself and handing over the captaincy. Chappell felt that certain players were only concerned about themselves, and not doing the best for the team cause. He thought Tendulkar should bat in the middle order in the odi side for the betterment of the team, but Tendulkar was clearly unhappy about giving up his opening spot. Greg Chappell is quite a strong minded person with a strong personality, so he was not going to be swayed by the politics in the background and was only going to do what he thought was best. There's an interview was tiger Pataudi who explains a lot of the conflict was due to cultural differences between how Indian cricket was run compared to how things were done in Australia. Greg Chappells main bug bear was that he felt individual needs were prioritised over what was best for the team going forward, but again he was also very rigid in what he believed was the right way to do things.

"I am Sourav Ganguly, hope you did not forget me" Quite misleading video, just an emotional assumption like lot of fans do + over exaggerating an ad @Nick - Ganguly was very poor in form at that time in 2004-05 he was struggling to score runs, he was not 2nd or 5th best ranked in the world, he was not even in top 20. Blaming BCCI for what? Dropping a player who is struggling to score runs. Thats exactly whats not happening right now and India is struggling to win titles. Dropping Ganguly allowed a player like Suresh Raina in the team who went on to help us win the world cup in 2011. Greg Chappel - Sourav Ganguly saga played out poorly because of two outspoken individuals involved. Also, after getting dropped Saurav Ganguly had actually done lot of hardwork in domestic circuit and county circuit, scored ton of runs to make the comeback. Appropriating it to a words of an advertisment being the one making the difference undermines his efforts on field

Exactly, I mean he was not in form those days. And, honestly after 2007 , I haven't seen him remain in form for long periods of time. He was well past his prime at that time .

The Chappell u have heard abt being great is Ian Chappell who is the elder brother of Greg Chappell. The Chappell brothers were among the best players in their time in Australia and they are very hard sporty people. Issue is they are of a past era where they won things so they think they can dictate stuff now. Ian Chappell is also very stern and outspoken with his words but he is technically extremely sound on mic as a commentator. His younger brother Greg was i think the first foreign coach of India where coach was in news more than players. He was very rigid and hard and didn't understand the requirement of the Indian team. He told Tendulkar to bat down the order for god sake. He wasn't ready to listen to any criticism about his style and always wanted his words to be written in stones and followed by everybody. BCCI as always was respectful to the foreigner to the point where they were disregarding the team itself...btw a very Indian thing to do in these circumstance. Yes, they needed to be better and step in and their lack of urgency cost us a lot in mid 2000s. The ad is truly iconic. I never knew the behind the scene stuff of pepsi with pesticides and Dada's ad contracts or whatever but I remember that ad. I really felt like he asked me if I remember him and I was emotional coz all i remember of my cricket days in those times were him walking out to the toss every single time. That was the emotion for all of us Indians at the time. Ganguly was portrayed as a selfish captain only after Chappell came in his term here. Before, Ganguly was touted as the fighting captain who chose players to win instead of draws and backed them when they weren't in form. His team from late 90s stayed till late 2000s/early 2010s which was carried by Dhoni. That was the impact of Dada in our cricket. If you ask anyone in India who the best leader is in Indian cricket history, they would go for Dhoni or Ganguly as majority. As a batsman, he was flawless on the off side and against spin. The flair that comes from being a left hander was first witnessed by us Indians through Dada but above all that, he is a true fighter. The timid India after Independence that agreed to anything that was said to them was no more under his reign. The Kohli, Siraj, Pandya that we see today being aggressive on field, grew up watching Dada leading the Indian team. For comparison, u can say Dhoni was to Ganguly, what Ponting was to Steve Waugh PS - I urge u to watch the Breakfast with champion part 1 of Sourav Ganguly which was blocked in ur region. It has some great moments which tell u how much importance he had for us

Fortunately or unfortunately ... from 2005-ish upto march 2007 was a period when I didn't follow cricket much ... bcz was just too busy with multiple things happening in my life. So I don't recall much of that entire saga of Ganguly-Greg Chappell and his ouster from team .. when I tuned back in cricket for 2007 WC it was so disappointing that I again stopped watching it till T20 WC

Lol… ad was not the only thing that helped Dada… he scored mountain of runs in domestic cricket. Dada does credit the ad in his biography for bringing him back in public mind, but it was his performance in domestic circuit that got him back in team.

Exactly...infact when he was thrown out he was the only batsman who was scoring runs in Zimbabwe, England and Ireland tours, half of the teams total was alone scored in these series. But he failed against Pakistan and thrown out once he was punished for slow over rate during odi series. But he scored huge amount of runs in domestic and failure of other batsmen again in South Africa made come back of Dada. This ad was when he was asked to make a come back...

He over-exaggerates almost every story he tells. Ganguly was well past his prime when this happened. Everybody knows that Ganguly was a brilliant and dashing batsman during late 90s and early 2000s but soon became an average batsman once his weakness against Short ball was discovered by teams. It all started with Shoaib Akhtar hitting him in ribs at Sharjah. Thereafter even small teams peppered him with bouncers although Ganguly did occasionally play gutsy knocks( eg cwc 2003 semifinals against Kenya) but that dashing 90s batter would never turn up again.

umm yeah but there is no denial about his contribution to Indian cricket no? If nothing, he should have been treated with respect. He fought tooth and nail for his team, he dragged it up. Im a huge MSD fan but there is no denying that if Saurav hadn't taken his chance with MSD, his unorthodox batting would have been given less chances. Ganguly gave Indian team a fighting spirit, MSD managed it and used his own flair to take the legacy forward. That is why Dhoni gave captaincy to Ganguly in that last test match of his. He knows what his captain did for the team, Ganguly will always be Dhoni's captain.

@@aadeezology9743 u r absolutely right. Ganguly was the person that transformed India from an average 90s team into a top cricketing unit during his captaincy. Nobody can deny that. Im just saying that Ganguly was among top opening batsmen during late 90s alongwith Sachin, Mark Waugh, Saeed Anwar, Gary Kirsten, Nathan Astle etc but he struggled for most part during later half of his career as a batsman.
@aadeezology9743
@aadeezology9743 Жыл бұрын
@@rameezrather5385 true he was struggling, maybe that ouster helped him fire up again. But whatever may be the reason, he should have been treated with dignity and respect even if you wanted to oust him from the team. It should not have been Chappell's letters, shameful ones that lied about him bullying other players and being physically unfit, that should have caused it. They should have pulled up his performance on him not a dictator-like coach, because that is what every player has called Chappell. A dictator, making them play in a way they didn't want to. Natural game should not be sacrificed at any costs, it puts undue pressure on the player.
