I assume he didnt want to "lean" into the female because he was on that vertical surface, sure they can climb pretty decent, but they also very well know they're not on flat ground. I think he mostly wanted to avoid losing traction and falling and also didnt want to step on the female with this front leg pairs, because he'd literally be falling into the female's fangs, which would definitely not be a good look for his life expectancy. I think on flat ground he'd have managed perfectly fine.

My OBT Male did exakt the same thing 😂 He made it after the 3rd attempt. 4 weeks later she made an cocoon. Between 50 and 60 tiny OBTs made it until now. But the best thing is that he is still alive 👌

Just from observation I think you may want to create a “Smash” or “Haba Time” enclosure that they can be on level ground with room to achieve the required positions. OBT TCF and RCF have done just about the same for us... we breed and sell tarantulas and have bred 2 of the 4 OBT types and both of those types we noticed the females were almost on their backs only once we had a female that tried to eat the male. In our experience the OBT's have been quite chill as long as we gave them enough space in their enclosures....they were definitely not orange bitey things 🤷‍♂️👌👍

But would that mean shes uncomfortable with her living situation, or just typical obt defense?

I used to have a coworker that was a tarantula breeder and he had a couple males that did similar things like that and they did their job, maybe even better then the couple of males that got it done right away. They tended to live longer then the ones that got it done fast. He was able to get multiple breedings from them vs the ones that got it done right away. Those ones mostly got killed after the first or second time breeding.

I've read about a procedure to induce autotomy in tarantulas. Unfortunately the spider needs to be awake, and not under anesthesia, because it is a "conscious" reflex. So that means fixation. Good luck doing that with an OBT! I wouldn't recommend this in your case because the leg doesn't seem to affect her that much. If I had to, I'd put her under first, then fixate her, do the procedure, then release her. And keep a bit of superglue at the ready in case the autotomy doesn't work right. Quite risky, in any case!

I noticed the other day that antscanada is using an endoscopy like camera to capture video in his ant tubes. That could be a great thing to use for stubborn Ts in their hides

There is a chance they could bite it and maybe get electrocuted though? I dunno how those tubes are wired but I imagine they have live cables inside them. You could wrap it in something stronger than fangs I guess, but then they could break them trying to attack it. A good idea in theory but I feel like logistically it would be dodgy. Amazing idea for any (edit: I obviously meant ANT, phone, gosh) colonies though!

@@jessesimmons1910 a small voltage for a human would still be a massive jolt for such a tiny animal though? For us it would tickle, but they are less than 1/1000 of our size! A rain drop is a barely noticed irritation for us but can drown a spider if they're small enough (or it is big enough a rain drop) so I dunno, I wouldn't personally risk it.

@@MoAoX7 yes, I am serious, and it is a perfectly reasonable concern. Live electricity at such low a voltage may not harm a human, but we are much bigger than spiders. If you want to risk your beloved pets because you think it's a joke, that's your choice and I can't stop you. Perhaps you also make a habit of climbing pylons but never crossing the barbed line because you think it's funny to mess with electricity, I don't know. Not sure how electricity and the strength of a spider's fangs has anything to do with the heat of the sun either. Some people are very combative on here, it's very strange.

I recently paired my female OBT (little over 1 month ago) and she was soooo chill like yours. The only thing different was my guy knew what to do haha AND no joke, once he got insertion, it was over 5 mins b4 he was done. My wife was recording and it took so long that i told her to stop then right b4 he was done she started back recording. But yea, they were both super chill and was one of the best pairings i have ever had. I think your male may have done the job but I would do it again just to be sure. I hope my girl lays soons but if not then im gonna breed them again as he has been mature now for about 2-3 months or so. Loved the video tho. The guy really made for an interesting video haha
