At the end of the day, cops are civil servants there job is to serve and protect their communities. How is arresting a bunch of kids for no reason beneficial to the community? Grown as hell power tripping on some kids like some big bullies. Threatening children that they know they had no right or business to harass. Does that improve the relationship between the community and the police or worsen it? This is sad and infuriating. The cops had every opportunity to de-escalate the situation and give these kids some life advice and move on with their day and fight real crime. The joke is they never act this tough when it comes to criminals only groups they deem uneducated enough to bully. And all the kids who had the audacity to state their rights were threatened or thrown in cuffs. How traumatizing. That’s why people grow up hating cops and don’t rely on them to truly protect them in the face of danger. Worse part is they had the black cop speaking to the families as if that was supposed to make it better. Once they arrived to the scene and there was no fight they no longer had any reason to be there so they made one up. Legally should they be “ loitering” no, but these kids probably do this everyday. Bullying school kids who are hanging out in a neighborhood like they probably do every day is crazy and lame. They were so bored and I’m so pissed off even witnessing it.. notice how they didn’t want kids calling their parents and all of sudden that tough talk disappeared once parents came. If they would’ve talked to and approached the kids that calmly and mannerly, whole circumstance could have been different. Cops dead wrong, parents dead wrong. Sure kids should have manners and respectful but their children as an adult it’s your job to manage your emotions and responses to children bc you are the adult. They’re obligated to state their location, though, especially if it’s stated in their jurisdiction. They also have to STATE that they “plead the 5th”, if they don’t it’s automatically considered as “refusal to cooperate” and could be considered a charge. If they get charged with loitering, it’s especially needed to state their location and reasoning since loitering means “Being in a place without reason, which could cause suspicion for destruction.”

It’s common that people tend to listen to tone rather than words and base intentions off of that, but when it comes to police (Especially for people of color/younger people) it’s better to play it smart, imo. Cops could charge the child with a multitude of charges because the kids don’t even know what they’re getting charged with, all because they’re choosing not to cooperate. I believe they didn’t state their location because they don’t understand what “loitering” is, and I do feel like the cop should’ve CLARIFIED what it meant.
