Marvelous lecture and Dan Peterson as professor! But in the Nicene creed, one clause gives me pause: “… being of one substance with the Father,” or, “Consubstantial with the Father.” I think the damage of the verbiage is proof of its intent-the creation of a combined God, Triune tune, affinity for Trinity. That was the twist in their gist, and it might be why Elder Bruce R. McConkie referred to the “Creeds that debased the true Gods of Heaven.” I was raised in the Lutheran faith, and recited them constantly. I think the most insidious deceit is “the philosophies of men mingled with scripture.” It is absolutely the most effective and destructive type of tripe. Much of the creed from the first council at Nicea is good gospel stuff. But one phrase in it begat that Trinitarian tenant that is the hallmark of all apostate Christianity. I reflect on the effect, and I’m not fan of Nicene scene. The chief beef that Evangelicals have with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is that we Saints have “a different Jesus,” a Jesus who is a separate being from God the Father.

The argument Dr. Peterson is making, is that “same substance” is a pretty vague term. Lutherans interpret that kind of as “being the same person.” But it could mean, “made out of the same kind of stuff.” Like, you and I are of the same kind of matter. We do actually have a distinction like this in the LDS church. Morgan bodies versus resurrected, eternal bodies. So, are the resurrected bodies of Christ and the Father made out of the same kinds of matter? Sure. Is it the same kind of matter as our mortal bodies? Maybe? Of course, I think that whole question is Platonist nonsense, so…

I’m curious about the Filioque. Bishop of Rome left imperial Christianity based on a few things and the reinterpretations of Jesus being co-eternal is a major change to the Trinity. ~600 years after Constantine’s imperial Christianity. I find it interesting that Protestants argue that LDS theology isn’t a Trinity yet the Trinity isn’t agreed upon in ancient Christianity. 🤷🏻‍♂️ Interested information on the great schism and the Filioque statement.

@@lamontholm More than that, in ancient Christianity, the trinity didn’t exist.

Rather than "ammo" and the rather logical associations, could I recommend couples counseling? If your husband can google, he will quickly discover and point out that a lot of the "information" presented here isn't consistent with the academic consensus. Apostles didn't stop existing because they were killed. Rather, they were a burden to the local bishops and populations because they stayed with them when visiting and had to be fed. They were a financial liability, in many ways similar to missionaries in the early LDS tradition who relied on hand-outs into the 1880s I believe. John Hamer (community of Christ) has a lecture on this topic if you are interested. Good luck in your marriage. Mixed faith relationships are difficult (on both sides).

To save you guys sometime Dr. Peterson begins to speak about the council of Nicaea in the 40th minute marker. I like that Dr. Peterson is giving the best human explanation possible for the Holy Spirit to have failed in delivering the church from apostasy. My dear brothers and sisters in Christ. The Holy Spirit didn’t fail. His Church continued to preach the Universal Gospel from St. Thomas’s followers in Kerala, India to Paul’s students in Greece and Rome. In Catholicism the Holy Spirit plays an active role in this period of “apostasy”. I recommend studying the Church Fathers and other apostolic doctors of the church such as St. Augustine (a convert) to Christianity. You will see that the Holy Spirit is present in each Saint’s life in their own way, Moving the church forward instituting the sacraments, liturgy and canonizing Saints and Martys.

When a Bishop is out of town his first counselor takes the reins of leading the ward. Same with a stake president is absent, the first counselor presides the council. This argument that “the apostles died, therefore the magisterium is in apostasy” is a weak argument against the promise of the Holy Spirit to guide the magisterium as Christ promised John 16:12-13, 2 Timothy 2:1-2 Holy Spirit will guard the apostles in all truth to protect against men and heretics.
