If the sound driver glitches out, it can make a sudden, loud sound (like "ERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR" or short looped part of the sound that was playing) and cause a blue screen. But it's more of a jump scare or being startled than something genuinely scary, especially if using the computer at night and trying to be quiet. It happened to me a few times, and I was wearing headphones.

Happened to me once. The second time was when I once wanted to play heroes 3 on my pc and everything went smoothly, was playing for about 40 minutes and if y'all don't know what that game is, it's basically there are bots or real players with multiple kingdoms and a huge map with an overworld and underground section. you can conquer other kingdoms on a grid map making yourself stronger. you can use troops to fight mob waves on the ground and pickup resources or artifacts to make your hero stronger and upgrade the castle, it is a pretty good game but as you can tell it is one of those games that are really chill (unlike shooters which are forcing you to stay on your guard to win for an example) and lets you put your guard down. so my guard was really down and i was just vibing, the game has a really quiet but nice soundtrack so you usually have to play the game on almost max volume and then it hit. the game froze with an error message popping up on my screen and the loud "ERRRRRRRRRRRR" sound played. it only stopped when i turned off the game. experiencing a sound error like that is quite terrifying, but it is most terrifying when your volume is almost all the way up, your guard is completely down and you expect it the least. i never opened the game again cause i am not getting a heart attack again

BSOD always got me. It's what made me so anxious. If the system hung or stuttered for a few seconds it would take me back to the BSODs that jerk the audio over and over again. The screen of Windows Recovery, or whatever it's called, too, had a few systems end with that screen. A boot chkdsk..that I didn't initialise.

i have two irrational fears, both of which still slightly haunt me to this day: the blinking power light when a computer is in sleep mode. not at the day, rather at night, especially if it's strong enough to actually light up its surroundings a noticeable amount the beeping that occurs when a computer runs into a fatal error in the hardware itself, such as failing to properly boot into the os after multiple attempts. on one of my older computers, the beeping is loud and is accompanied by a red power light. one time really late at night, my computer restarted for a system update, failed to boot into the os, and then started beeping, it triggered a terror in me that has never been matched since.

Apparently there’s this setting in Windows XP where you can make your computer say “printing complete” when you’re finished printing something. I used to be afraid of our computer's antivirus on Windows 98. We had a really old version of AVG back in the day that would sometimes pop up with a message saying "VIRUS FOUND!" in big red text and it had a picture of a really surly looking ogre or monster on it. That message, along with BSODs, scared the hell out of me as a kid. (I used to think that the BSOD meant the computer was going to explode for some reason)

I once helped a teacher who gave support to students with disabilities with her computer, it was a high tier XP machine and it was crazily slow, I backed up and installed a fresh copy of Windows 7, some of the interactive software it had was very old (even from win 3.1 era) as you imagine, almost all of them had splash screens, as all the installers ran I didnt test them at all. One day an autistic girl came out screaming and in tears, because one of the splash screens glitched because of Windows Aero, it flashed and the colors distorted, looked kinda creepy tbh, I felt so bad for the poor girl and I apologized, I fixed that but from that point she turned her head away everytime she launched the game. For almost a full year, after binging danooct1's videos, they not only made me realize how much I love computers and now I'm an IT worked, but it also sparked a weird irrational fear of viruses. Yes, virus can destroy your pc, steal your data, and my computer surely had plenty of viruses before (totally clean now since I learned how to clean it up),but my fear isn't actual viruses.. its dream viruses. I kept having reocorring dreams, every single time, that something i have or is nearby got hacked or a virus, and the viruses on that thing were like a nightmare to me. I remember some of the dreams was just my uncle coming along and cleaning the pc, and it was the most irrational fear I've ever felt watchimg him wait om a weird room with a 50' display telling its cleaning viruses. After around a year, this weird dream thing finally stopped, but it really fucked up my sleep schedule

It's only happened to me twice, and doesn't involve an operating system, but the sounds fans make when they start malfunctioning. I remember turning on one of my laptops once in the morning, only to be greeted with a loud squeal until I turned it back off. One of my desktops also mad the squeaks, but it just made the sound every minute or so. I thought it was some kind of animal under my trailer making startling sounds or something so I ran out of that room when I could. I don't think about it much now but I don't want to hear another damaged computer fan, or *whatever* caused it to make that sound. Oh, and yeah, bluescreens are scary because of how they can appear within a split-second with no warning, and could theoretically show up at any moment. Up until more modern Windows versions, they looked ancient, which makes them creepy (but none are as creepy as the screenshot of Windows 1's scrambled bluescreen). Even Windows 10's ":(" bluescreen can be creepy because of how you can see it being drawn instead of it being instant, giving away that it's being rendered differently than Windows itself somehow.
@greenknight9000
@greenknight9000 2 жыл бұрын
As a kid, BSODs scared me so much, it was because of how it looked. The blue used in the BSOD was dark blue, and so it just felt more ominous, you know? The shade of a colour can really leave an impression on you, so whenever the screen went black or there was some audio buffering, I immediately dove under the desk as I feared a BSOD was about to trigger or render, and I'd look at the walls and anything else reflecting the monitor glow to determine the colour and whether or not it's that unmistakable dark blue hue I dreaded. I'm so glad Windows nowadays made the BSOD a more lighter, softer colour with a more friendly appearance

I remember being scared of BSoDs as well, and safe mode also scared me for some reason. Maybe the low resolution with the black background and text on the corners that says "Safe Mode" - i guess because it outright mentions it's a "safe mode" made me feel UNsafe (kinda like having a banana offered and the person offering it to you saying "it's not poisoned" without being asked) - to this day I still feel uneasy going into safe mode. Another fear I had was sort of related to shut downs like in the video, because I had a nightmare once that I went to shut down the PC and then went downstairs, however the PC wouldn't shut down and i could hear a text to speech voice (an unintentionally creepy one too, this was back in the XP era) as if it were playing right inside my head telling me something about a shut down or something. I also had another nightmare where my PC wouldn't boot because it couldn't find a "WLAN" so I went to bed then the "camera" would switch to the monitor with a dramatic zoom and it would show a radar telling me a WLAN had been found. The last one I remember is the CD drive going crazy on its own without me touching it (I had discs break inside a few times before having that dream) Anyway having watched this video was a surreal experience but in the best way possible. I love the fact that there were others who shared some of these irrational fears with me.

Safe mode genuinely feels like a safe place for me because I understand that it tries to only load what is essential to prevent loading malware and the like. I will admit though that I am somewhat uncomfortable in BIOS menus since I feel it would be too easy to fuck something up. Same with regedit. I don't think it's fear necessarily, just a strong desire to be careful with what I press and I should avoid hitting extraneous buttons so I don't change stuff I don't want to change. There's a lot of things on my computer I try to be careful with lol

For real, black screen sudden BSODs and lower resolutions were nightmare fuel for me because at that time I didn't have my own computer so I used the family one. I remember really well a particular time were I was playing Super Mario World (emulated) on a old XP computer back in 2005, I was alone in the Living Room and suddenly a RSOD (Red screen of death) the one that does something with your data? Can't remember. I was scared as all hell, the computer making that repeated loud sound with lots of words on screen and the fact I was alone that day was crazy. So I ran upstairs praying that computer power off by itself after a couple of minutes. Thankfully my mom only got angry because the computer was turn on wasting electricity doing nothing, it turned up to be fine by now. That day, was the first time I feared computers. You know what's funny? a month later my parents bought me a Playstation 1, pumped up my disc and BOOM, the Disgusting Purple Bios Screen, doing nothing sitting there on my TV. It wasn't as scary as the Windows one, but damn that Bios screen was ugly. Had to close my eyes and turn off the console.

This is funny. When I was a kid, I learned how to mess around with computers pretty darn well. Used to install all sorts of games. Didn't check any files, just went ahead and installed stuff. Fast forward to early 2015, something got me fucking traumatized. I downloaded sXe (an anti-hacking device for CS 1.6, some servers said it was required to have it) straight out of the website and it came loaded with a virus. I got fucking terrified, as it was the first time I had legitimately experienced the effects of a virus on a computer. Fake pop-up message boxes started appearing from the taskbar, and when I clicked the button to close it, a weird hand icon would appear (I say weird because it looked like the standard 1990s Windows hand cursor, despite me being on a modern Windows 7). Clicking on the X to close the message boxes only downloaded more shit into my computer. Avast managed to stop the infection and I cleaned up the computer. But the worst thing was that, 3-4 days later, I was browsing in my computer when all of a sudden, Avast goes off indicating another infection... FROM THE SAME VIRUS. And keep in mind, I wasn't even downloading anything suspicious, just looking at an Wikipedia article. I instantly jumped the hell out of my chair, launched Avast for a complete check-up of the computer. It again detected the virus, but I was hesitant on deleting it because it could delete a very important system file. So I quarantined it. For 4 years. It stayed for 4 fucking years on quarantine, until my OS had a breakdown and I installed Vista Starter as a temporary solution. Then Vista expired, refused to work, I gave in and installed Windows 7 Ultimate again (had to pay to have W7U installed, this is why I had Vista installed, just as a temporary stop-gap) What's funny is that I actually developed a thing for computer viruses (how they work, how they're engineered, how to protect yourself), but do I want any more viruses making my PC run amok? God no. That "zombie virus", somehow popping up after I had fucking deleted it haunts me to this day, even though I really like seeing danooct1's virus demos. Also, I switched to Kaspersky, way better at defending you from viruses. It's so smart that sometimes it even auto-deletes the file before you even have a chance to use it, and terminates your connection to sites with malicious content.

I feel the Non-ACPI either. It was horrible especially on cloudy days. When I was 6 years old in my house there was our first PC, an HP with Pentium 2, it always showed that message, and I was terribly afraid of it, because whenever it turned off completely, the speaker would make a "pop " by the remaining current and the CRT relays also opened and hissed. but I think the terror itself came from the abrupt change that we read the XP shutdown texts was always: "Saving your settings... Windows is Shutting Down.... BLACK SCREEN!! - its now safe to turn off" just think, you're a 6yr kiddy, cloudy day in the afternoon, lights off only the dim light from the curtained windows, you're alone in the room, you have to turn off the pc because you're bored of the cd that came in the cereal... and you have to turn it off because you're not going to use the pc anymore but also because it's cloudy and after that turn off the pc because dad told you that if it rains and lightning strikes or the electricity goes out, "the pc could explode." ... BSOD just scares me. Literally traumatised me as a kid. I was using Windows 7 or something, opened Windows Live Movie Maker to edit some recordings I made on fake viruses (You know the VBS scripts where you make a chain of msg boxes?) The laptop hung for a while, and then it blue screened (and I misread 'problem has been detected' as 'virus has been detected'). I screeched, tripped over the charger and bolted for my room. To make it worse, my sister decided to scan for viruses. She did it, came to me and told me that 'it blue screened again' and that there was 'another virus'. Needless to say, I never touched a laptop for ages. Tbh, it has made me more cautious of laptops and that in general. I researched, watched a bunch of danooct1 (man that guy is great) and hung around on malware wiki.

I have a few computer fears, like: - Windows Longhorn sounds: yes, they're fake, but when I was like 10, sounds of that system (especially the shutdown sound) used to scare me a lot. Like the "angel" voice made that startup kind of terryfing - Devices Turning On/Off by itself: Usually when I sleep with devices I fear they're gonna turn on randomly without my input, even though that won't happen so easy. When I had my PC in my room for a while (back in 2016) I used to sleep in my parents' bed because I was scared of that PC randomly turning on for no reason. - Black screens: usually when I sleep I cover my monitors with something, because the big black hole with a small orange/blinking white light for me is super scary. I can literally imagine scary things on it, even with eyes closed lol. That's also why I sleep with a TV on (it's next to my bed) - "It is now safe to turn off your computer" screen - especially the XP variant. The Windows logo (without XP next to the "Windows" text) and the small "It is now safe to turn off your computer" text on a black screen is very scary for me, even today. I literally couldn't sleep because of it, for some reason I thought this would appear on my monitor plugged to a PC, which is running Windows 10 (and the text was a lot less terryfing) - I was also scared of a 2007 Acer Aspire laptop (don't know the name, sorry) - mostly because I used to have a LOT of bloatware and viruses on it, which ended up killing it in 2017. Now every time I see that laptop my stomach is hurting and my brain freezes - Red/Orange/White lights on devices: for some reason these small lights are super scary. I cannot sleep without covering them, even today - Windows XP and Vista startup screen: the Windows XP startup screen was a bit scary, because of everything fading in, that streched Windows XP logo (unless you're on a 4:3 screen) and the Microsoft logo at the bottom right side of the screen. Windows Vista used to scare me because it was just a bar with a dark green thingy in it. "Microsoft Corporation" text used to scare me too, for some reason - Opening computer cases: in the past, I was scared of opening computer cases, since I thought they will shock me or something, even if they were turned off. Also turning on computers with the case open was pretty scary. This is the fear that I no longer have, now I like opening computer cases Thanks for reading my TED talk, also apologize for any english mistakes since English wasn't my first language

A few years ago, (below 2021) I was afraid of editing the registry, and whenever something was broken and the answer was to edit the registry, I just dealt with the problem. That changed ever since I tried out my first Regedit hack. (this year) I was also afraid of opening programs after I've downloaded them, even if they were official. (I was basically afraid of getting viruses from downloaded programs). Edit: Also as a kid, when I reboot my computer I get really scared and run around my whole house in circles until it successfully went past the starting windows screen. Nowadays I just sit there and wait for it to boot. I think running around the house waiting for it to boot is more fun than just sitting there, because when I sit there and wait I get impatient sometimes cuz my laptop is slow, and just go on my phone and go on Reddit or something while I wait.

I am also scared by my Windows 7 computer booting up so I usually just turn it on and then run out of the room because I am scared that a BSOD will occur especially if I was by myself and I didn’t know what the problem was.

I'm 32, I do programming and repairs, and BSODs still kinda creep me out, although not as much as before of course. When it was a kid, seeing a blue screen all of a sudden with inintelligible numbers made me very scared. Modern BSoDs are even worse because of the sad face emoji. There is a mixture between machines doing things on their own, the dramatism of your computer failing to a stop, and the sudden way it all happens, that makes them scary. I think most of us that grew with these machines can relate to this.

I was scared of a lot of those things. Low resolutions happened in the very early days of PC gaming (late 90s - early 2000s) back when all of the game was stored in data folders. I wasn't really scared of low resolutions before starting up an early video game (I lived during those good old Windows XP times). Those glitches and resolutions phobias are fairly common manifestations. Thanks for sharing this informative video Fly! P.S: I'm still quite scared. I'm scared especially when I do processes on the computer and the PC boots up and the black screen stays for about 30 seconds. What if something bad happens? XD. A fairly recent incident happened in 2020. During Windows 10 reinstalling (I have Windows 11 now) the GPU fucked up and the cursor started stretching when hovering and the checkboxes will get all messed up. I didn't touch the computer again for 2 months. Again,weird computer phobias like the ones you mentioned are unique obscure occurences. Thanks again for raising awareness on those types of phobias. I'm very glad to find myself over a vast community of people who had same fears (depends if PC,mobile etc.) P.P.S: Graphics were a pretty terrifying concept when I was a kid. I think I remember where this came from. I was playing a crappy 3D motorcycle game when I was a kid in the late 2000s and I drove into a tree and the images of leaves and stumps covered my screen. I SCREAMED LIKE A LITTLE GIRL. I am still wary when around trees in videogames. Thanks again Fly. P.P.P.S: Seems like everybody who had those irrational computer fears as a child became tech geniuses over time...

Malware scared me so much as a kid, I used to always have nightmares about Malware getting onto my grandma's computer, people controlling it remotely to do crazy shit! Crazy how scary those old windows xp machines were to kids. I had that same Malware nightmare very recently, where someone took me over and got into my bank account. It's an adult fear!

darn i used to be scared of those "illegal operation errors" and BSoD, and also unplugging my computer to clean it and put it back together, i still am, i always assume my whole windows installation will trash after cleaning my computer on the inside and i think something will go wrong and that will make me freak out a lot, i also used to be scared of low resultions and black screens with white text, but those fears fade out when i started to fix OSes by following KZbin tutorials, but yeah those are really scary, i also was scared of the sound that Windows XP makes when you bump the volume to the limit? yeah i had my speakers at 200% in the leaving room when that happened, and since then it makes me kinda uncomfortable, but yeah not much, good vid tho-

Error messages in general used to scare the crap out of me. I'd be doing my thing and then my flow would be interrupted by this scary imposing box telling me I was doing something wrong. Especially during the night? Or when no one's around? Might as well die, I guess. Eventually I got over my fear, but it came back for a week or two after playing DDLC lol

When I was younger (and still fear it) I fear BSoD and glitched sounds as they rip my soul in half. Sometimes I get nightmares like slow PCs having errors and destroying the world with very loud songs/sounds, ripping earth in half when the PC gets an error, and when I turn on my desktop and put the wrong password but still login and then the cursor showing the red X logo, everything pixelated, glitching, taking me back to lock screen, going back from windows 10 to windows 7 and me running from it but can't and more creepy stuff.
