You should be able to. “Lock”onto an aircraft. And based on crew skill. Then set the fuse correctly so you just have to fire enough time and be accurate.

December 1943, Unteroffizier (Corporal) Kramer belonged to the crew of panzer ace Otto Carius. Following the Axis retreat from Smolensk, Schwere Panzer-Abteilung 502(“Heavy Tank Battalion 502”), a Tiger unit, was stationed in north-east Belarus, on the Vitebsk-Nevel Road. Kramer apparently became irritated at the sight of Soviet aircraft streaming overhead, at low levels and decided to elevate his 8.8 cm (“88”) gun at them. While the 88 had originated as a flak gun, panzer crews were seldom equipped with AA ammunition - this meant that Kramer could down an aircraft only with a direct hit. With Carius assisting his aim, Kramer fired at least two shells. The second apparently hit a fighter-bomber on its wing, causing it to crash.

Sadly none of the crew survived the war. During the push to Berlin, the crew encountered an ambush by Soviet forces, fighting to their last shell. Kramer being the last one alive was surrounded by the Soviet infantry, and was executed on the spot.

This gave me the idea to try this in a test drive. I didn’t hit the plane, but I got close, and it’s fun to know you can do this! If anyone is wondering, the shell timer is set automatically, mirroring the distance of the plane after rangefinding.

@@MimiThomaFlwrs most axis weapons are extremely good what are you talking about? the Kugelblitz, Wirblewind and Ostwind/Ostwind II are all amazing AA pieces. The Regular Tiger is an amazing vehicle too with more than enough pen to kill anything it will face even in a full uptier and the armor is good enough when angled to stop most threats, the Panzer IV also punches way above its BR quite easily and Germans have some of the best gameplay at the 2.3-3.3 BR ranges for when you are new.

There's an old video (like 1940s old) training video for bomber crews talking about German Flack. In it, it discussed how the Germans used their AA guns and how good they got at it. At some point I intend to put it to practice myself as the methods described are a bit unorthodox but considering that Allied bomber crews had the absolute lowest lifetime expectancy of anyone of any army in WWII, id say they were probably on to something

It's funny how when Curtis LeMay stepped in as a Major in th USAAF the bomber crew mortality dropped, bombing precision increased and mission success increased because instead of zig zagging to miss flak he decided that flying forward at full speed is a better idea, notably he personally flew as the first bomber in the formation.

JUST FOR INFO: This is a GERMAN flak gun, the US and the British did have HE-VT shells but was kept a Secret for the entirety of WW2 So no, FLAKBUS doesnt need an airburst round...only a timed round shell. Meaning that you have to time the shell right. That includes all Axis flak guns
