KV3 program actually contributed to the IS development in an indirect way. Most of KV3's drivetrain(primarily gearbox and steering mechanism, but some other minor stuff as well) was installed on KV-1S, and later used for the IS series. One of the main issues with KV series was the fact that casting quality was nonexistent, and in practice individual tanks ended up with a mass of 46-50 tons. Original gearbox was derived from the one on the much smaller t28 and was rushed in development, which led to it having barely any potential for upgrades. One of the main points of the KV13 development was to sort out the issue with casting quality, and they did it in some very interesting ways. Shashmurin and his team re-engineered KV13 into lots of smaller and simpler castings which were assembled together with welding, and beefed up some of the weaker components by simply making them bigger(roadwheels, shock absorbers, etc).
@PSPaaskynen Жыл бұрын
To understand what a gamechanger the KV1 tank was, you must go to Parola armour museum where you can see an early KV1 model lined up with the ubiquitous T-26 tanks the Red Army fielded in 1940. The KV dwarfs the earlier models and its armour plating is nothing short of intimidating in comparison.

13:35 They must've hit one of the worst possible sections of the KV-1 to have this effect with a 150mm artillery shell. Even if it didn't directly damage the KV-1's armor, one of these rounds hitting the front hull or non-mantlet part of the turret should've given the occupants injuries from the pressure wave. I wish we could know what happened to the occupants of that tank, they either got really lucky or fought in spite of their concussions and other potential injuries. That cannon likely fired a 43.52 kg (95.9 lb) HE round. The ISU-152, world-famous for being THE definitive WWII derp gun that killed tanks on the regular, fired a 40kg-43.5kg HE round for reference (edit: SU-152 used very, very similar HE ammo and as Red Wrench outlined, performed a similar role for longer). It turned the occupants to jelly or blew the tank open through "overmatch", being such a large round that it cracked German armor plates open or rattled the chassis to pieces at times. I wanted to throw that out there for some perspective to folks. First-hand accounts always need to be used in conjunction with other sources, or a multitude of different accounts need to be used in conjunction to get a realistic picture of what REALLY happened.

What a fascinating series of tanks. It's odd, because I really loved WWII history for so many years, especially tanks and planes, but I had never heard of this thing until I played War Thunder five years ago. For Russia, it was always T-34-76 this, or T-34-85 that. I never even knew they had heavy tanks during the war. Since then, I've obviously dedicated a lot more study to it, and I've come to love the KV so much. Many interesting things to take away here: The KV-6, although being indexed as basically a KV-1 with 90mm of armor, was nothing more than a mention. All tanks with hull flamethrowers were known as "KV-1 with Flamethrower", similar to the "Shielded KV-1" name. The KV-85 prototype became the testbed for the KV-122, which still survives to this day in the 85 configuration. The KV-100 was a separate prototype from this. There is also the KV-85G, which was a KV-1S fitted with an 85mm gun (S-31). The mysterious third man in the turret was nothing more than a confusion created by British trials of the KV tank. They combined the Commander and Loader into a single crew member and turned the 3rd man into a Mechanic/Assistant Driver. Although I absolutely loved researching the entire KV series, the one that I still love reading about is the KV-3, the tank that had all the puzzle pieces, just not put together. Amazing video!
@RedWrenchFilms Жыл бұрын
I actually found it incredibly difficult to piece the KV-3 part of the video together! A lot of conflicting sources, dates and names involved and I did my best to stop it just becoming this huge mess of Objects and KVs and 107mm guns. Glad you enjoyed!
@Supernionra Жыл бұрын
Yeah, the names are the most confusing part. One document even calls the T-220 the KV-4, which I didn't know until a couple days ago. Good luck with your IS video, since name recycling is present with those tanks as well. As far as the KV-3 goes, a selection of sources state that not only the hull and ZiS-6, but even the turret were all built, just ended up at different locations. If you ever need help with any topic, I'll try to give you any primary/secondary sources I have access to.

That KV-1 that held off advancing German forces for days was being withdrawn to the rear when it broke down. It was towed to that location where the crew was given orders to hold off the advancing armor as long as possible. They managed to accomplish that by being resupplied at night with ammunition, rations and fresh crews. I think the crew took off / escaped once the tank started being hit by 88's or heavy artillery rounds.

It is said, that the requirement for a main battle tank sufficiently armored against the effects of the German 3.7 cm anti-tank gun stemmed from the experience with the Soviet tanks in the Spanish Civil War. While Germany had only delivered as tanks the PzKpfWg I to Spain, Germany had delivered more than 400 PAK 3.7cm too, which were quite effective against T-26s and BT-5s or BT-7s respectively.

Quite right. The tanks of the 1930s were generally armored only enough to stop HE shell fragments, because that was the main threat before the towed AT gun was invented. Once it was, the soviets responded with the KV and T-34 designs.

Could you also do the BT line, I always thought they might be able to jam a 57mm in one

Great idea :)

The BT-7A had a 76.2mm regimental howitzer for use as a close-support HE tank - pretty much the same idea as the Panzer IV with its short 75mm. They did test a longer 76mm in a BT but by then the T-34 was in the works.

I'm glad that someone consider the T-28 as a medium after all that time hearing super heavy

The T-28 was the world's first mass-produced medium tank,

4:50 slight correction, panzer III already had the 50 mm cannon at least on the ausf. F model, and had the StuG with 75mm gun mounted on it. So they had in fact sufficient power to penetrate the first KV models. The KV was the best tank for the USSR at the time considering other models were T-26 and BT models. But thanks for the research, its good to see something not about the T-34's or IS series.

The Pz III did not have a 50mm gun in 1939 - from my understanding, the vast majority didn’t even have 50mm by Barbarossa. And even if they did, the KwK 38 would seriously struggle to penetrate a KV-1, and combat reports tend to agree. There is a reason why the Pak 40 and KwK 40 were rushed into production. And the StuG’s and Pz IV’s short 75mm would have been hopeless against the armour of a KV - HEAT rounds weren’t present until around 1942 and even then they were relatively inaccurate.

@@RedWrenchFilms thanks for clarifying, maybe I made a mistake and the production of panzer III with 50mm cannon started at that period but weren't deployed yet

500th comment 🎉. Thanks for doing a video on the much overlooked, but just as respectable line of tanks. The KV1 was a terror in its time. The T-34 was just better and easier to build.
