the optimal way to clear dungeons is to pull every single unavoidable mob as far as you can until you hit a wall (not a literal wall, but a wall meant to prevent you from continuing any further until you have cleared the enemies). then you kill them all by spamming aoes and soaking dmg coming from sometimes 20 different sources. it's an adrenaline rush, some of the pulls are so insane that if you manage to do it without dying people will actually gush over how well you did i did mt. gulg completely blind as a dark knight, full pulled and got 3 commends and a ton of praise in the party chat. accidentally forgot to remove it from my selected duties, got it again, did it again and got the same fanfare

As a new player and tank I have to ask a genuine question: What's the ideal amount of pulls, should I really do "wall to wall" or should I go more like 3-4 groups of enemies at a time or something like that? I don't want to bore the people I'm playing with, but unless if I know the healers are good at their job I generally feel too scared to pull a bunch of enemies at once.

The dungeons from HW onwards are mostly designed such that you only can pull maximum 2 groups of grunts, with often a barrier of door opening up only after you kill that 2 groups The dungeons where u can pull insane number of grunts are in ARR, so those you have to pace. As a tank main, I usually go slow with one group of grunts (esp in ARR dungeons) to check the healers competency level. From there I decide how much W2W to do this is impt especially in lower levels like Satasha where the healer don't have all this more advanced abilities due to lvl cap

100% whatever your heart desires. As long as both you and your healer are decently geared for leveling dungeons and both are decent at the job, as in popping mits and ogcd's, you can wall to wall literally any mob pack in the game. Just limit test and don't be afraid of wiping, as it is all part of learning the game.

ARR: Push your mitigation as far as it will let you go, don't be afraid to test limits, but some pulls you shouldn't w2w, like Aurum Vale's first room or parts of Brayflox HVW and beyond: Wall to wall every pull. arm's length and your invul are mitigations, use them

ARR dungeons have been redesigned to accommodate wall to wall pulls, so it pays to start practicing early. If your healer is decent, they know they cant AoE yet and should be spamming heals on you. That is in itself a net positive in dps (even if youre the only one that can aoe)

Always wall to wall. Anything less is disgraceful. I dread going to dungeons when leveling other jobs, because most tanks are too slow. A wipe is preferable to small pulls.

@@KitKatNisa wipe at least makes it an interesting run. Both tank and healer were pushed to their limit and now know how to improve. Every dungeon can be completed wall to wall. I play both healers and tanks and can attest to that from each role. Playing "safe" gets boring after thousands of dungeons in this game. To the limits!

follows is my take as someone that started MMORPGs with EverQuest and Ultima Online and never once played a Healer, who played FF14 since launch for a with random year long breaks, and who never play WHM until January or 2023 which led to me actually making it to Ishgard for the first time ever. Most important, more so than anything in the couple paragraphs that follow: some tanks have no love for the sprouts that trigger a “we have a new character tk dungeons, yay bonus.” Take dungeon newbies through the whole thing, ask them to check their maps for blank spots even prior to the final boss. --- Because there’s a handful of dungeons where healer doesn’t have regen or cure2, and tanks don’t have as many damage mitigation abilities meaning the WHM is stuck spamming heals as quick as possible. Also sight lines and getting to 80%+ hit points before popping sprint only to wind up in a corner inside a room. Plus it kind of ruins any bit of enjoying a dungeon dive for what can be; running to a central spot and then having a Ranged character (preferably the Healer. It’s literally part of the healer Novice Hall training.) It lets people actually breathe some, snag all of the treasure chests, run dungeon events. Hell, I still have no ideal what the scales do when you pick up the 4 weights and I started playing FF14 at launch. Every group has just brute forced it. Plus y’all like to leave something like 30% of the enemies alive in a duty category called “Leveling.”

FWIW these days individual mobs no longer give XP in dungeons, so for the most part a mob that doesn't need to be fought to progress doesn't offer any benefit.
