May I recommend getting some good quality used wood-burning stoves, so, once you've installed register plates with insulation on top, your wood supplies will go towards heating the house interiors and not getting sucked up the chimneys? I too have 'electric water' ie a pump sucking from a capped spring, and the sole heating here is 2 wood-burners downstairs and a very pretty anthracite stove in the main bedroom. Mad, as when I dry-lined the walls I ran all the pipes for proper central heating....but plans get knocked out of shape, don't they?

Thank you Ann! Yes I was flat out with the mask today when working with the polyfilla. I forgot to wear it for a bit and could definitely feel the difference in only a short time! And when we have nothing else, we'll live on optimism and laughs....and here was me thinking I was a cynic! Who knew?? 😆😍

Yes, it was definitely worth the €1k to have a place to cook, shower and hang out without needing a fully kitted-out house. It will likely remain our main living space for quite some time yet. We just need somewhere with less condensation to sleep for the winter.

Thanks Aisling! I feel strongly about the importance of portraying the 'warts and all' version of things. I almost stumbled naively into this choice myself in the past, I'm glad now that I didn't. It's important to have a certain amount of chickens in a row before we jump in, but with a bit of prep, some resources and the willingness to experience a certain level of discomfort, either physical or mental, it's 100% possible!

If it's bees get a local beekeeper to come & collect them. I've been in a beekeeping club & we did that for homeowners: free colonies! Otherwise that's just more damp you don't need.

People keep suggesting zinc indeed, just a little hard to attain when in isolation but I'll prioritise it over the weekend, defo feels like supplements might help!

@@DiaryofaDitchWitch I’m so sorry you guys have been hit so badly, it really is a rough bug and for so many can linger for a long time, hence the suggestion of the combo - it eradicated it for good, no one in my circle has had it twice. The Quercetin kills all virus in the cells, the zinc allows it to enter through the cell wall. We all had the bug in our home and were all over it in 3 days max. It’s a game changer and we always have all three (iincl the vitam C) on hand. The vitamin C protocol at 1000mg per tablet goes like this. The moment you start feeling unwell you start taking the VC 1-2000 mg each hour until you get an upset tummy. It’s individual so it could be 6 or 15 tablets - this gives you your tolerance and this is what you take each day until you feel better- so far 3-4 days has been our max for any cold, it just nips it in the bud quickly. When you have time look up the Susan Humphries protocol- good for all kinds of ailments. The vitamin D is the insurance, if you can get as much as possible built up naturally during the sunny months you should be ok through the winter.

We're putting hinges on the chipboard Ann so that they will function as windows until the windows arrive. It's just to let a small bit of heat build up so we can get the walls dry, and to make it a little more comfortable whilst we tend the flames. The cold weather arrived today and the hatches must be battened down 😋
