In this video I do a review of Jami, a libre messaging application that requires no phone number or email to sign up, supports end to end encryption, its code is open source, privacy respecting, and modifiable (like all libre software) and is available on many platforms.
Download Jami here

A more technical overview of jami by someone smarter than me
• Adrien Beraud - 009: D...
Description from the Free software foundation
GNU Jami (formerly SFLphone, GNU Ring) is a universal and distributed communication platform, implemented as free (libre) software, which respects the freedoms and privacy of users. Aimed at the general public as well as professionals, Jami provides all its users a universal communication tool, autonomous, libre, secure and built on a distributed architecture thus requiring no authority or central server to function.
GNU Jami satisfies a high priority software goal of the Free Software Foundation, responding to the challenges of privacy on the Internet. Developed by Savoir-faire Linux, Jami takes advantage of an active development community thanks to the support of young Google Summer of Code developers as well as research partnerships with Polytechnique Montréal and the Université du Québec à Montréal.

@@SchemingGoldberg Do they keep a backup of those backups? And if so, are those backups backed up as well? What about the backups of the backups of the backups? What if they have a way to distort space and time in such a way that they can store a theoretical infinite amount of those backups? If they do, why don't they create a way to generate free, infinite energy off of the backups? Or - get this - what if they can just back up the original energy and reuse it? With all of this energy being backed up into existence, how do the laws of conservation get their energy back? If that is the case, what if they back up the law of conservation infinitely, thus causing all of the energy, and due to some stupidly complex physics, matter, everywhere in the universe to be sapped out of existence? Or they could just *not* create backups. That works too.

Something I am wondering, is when the grid goes down, how will we move data to gain access to Jami? The recent planned outages here in the US exposes a weakness many of our communication systems have now, which is dependency on the network and internet as a whole. I would like to see ways we can, say, bypass the major ISPs to establish these peer to peer networks in a similar way to how older gaming systems could directly connect and play against each other within a certain range (similar to the Nintendo DS)

but you still can connect your neighbourhood together. its not too hard to make your own network with mikrotik/cisco devices. Also there is plenty of air fiber products that only requires good air condition to transfer data. For example in Turkey, there is lots of small ISP's that we work together. They're using mikrotik routers and receiver/transmitter antennas. If global internet suddenly shuts down, the customers of this ISP will still be able to communicate each other.

@tfksworldoflinux
@tfksworldoflinux 3 жыл бұрын
@@lifebarier Correct. GTK is totally different from KDE's (Qt's) perspective. KDE does have support for GTK themes so you can run the apps. However, I've matched the themes so the title bar and buttons are the same for me. For those who want to take a look: In System Settings go to Application Style and click the button Configure GNOME/GTK Application Style. I've chosen Breeze for GTK which seems to take over the window decoration KDE uses. In my case this is Neonyt-Aurorae. The layout of GTK apps however is different and this is because the design philosophy is different. For me its not really a problem. I just make sure to match colors, fonts, controls. That helps a lot to make things look more coherent. I get your frustration over the open dialog. I also do like KDE's (Qt's) approach better.

What does this have to do with the grid going down? It still needs an internet connection to work, wouldn't that be what you mean by "grid", or do you just mean electrical grid? Electrical grid would generally result in the internet going out though; or at least for most servers and providers.

@AmorDeae 2 жыл бұрын
Signal and similar services want your phone number cause it's the least identifying piece of information that will help prevent people clogging up their servers with accounts, since they are storing the message data, so you don't lose message data if you lose an acces device if you can get the phone number, and if you are messaging a lot of pictures for example, they don't need to clog up your drives. There is no need for Jami to ask for a phone number cause they don't suffer anything no matter how many accounts someone creates and how much data is sent or stored. Also, grid going down here seems to mean magically just the servers of other messaging services and the cellular network somehow go down, cause only as long as the internet network is functional will Jami work, and really as long as the network is up, most other contact services will be perfectly functional.

I would like to see a p2p mesh network for android phones which uses the long range cellular signals, of course without properly licensing out the bands. But if the idea is a mesh network on your phone then it would be almost impossible to track down individual users when hundreds or nodes are broadcasting at the same frequency. Implement the same technology bluetooth uses to avoid interference with nearby devices & just say "screw you" to whatever cellular provider is "renting" those frequency bands. I personally believe that no one has the right to sell of auction off frequencies of light, & an ultra long range mesh networking technology would be a really cool use for cellular phones. Just requires someone smart to program it & you would probably need a custom rom to unlock the full raido functionality. That would be be so awesome & of could do hops across highways to interconnect cities across the country together. That would be a truly decentralized internet. Design if front the ground up with privacy & anonymity in mind, like burner receive ips which are randomly generated like tor addresses & all traffic is end to end encrypted. Yes this would be illegal to broadcast on random frequencies but who cares, they wont be able to catch you.

I first installed SKYPE and it crashed my OS (Ubuntu Budgie) believe it or not. Skype is "presently" no longer in the repository... now I'm trying Jami. So far so good!

Is there really not a single free alternative that literally copies discord's interface? We are trying to move away from it, but every alternative we found is just missing a few essentials, matrix gets close, but its a not just there yet issue.

Only heard about these once but what was your experience with these? Rocket chat Mattermost Zulip btw was just looking for more and found out they're all listed on alternativeto.net/software/discord-app/?license=opensource
