Awesome I won this contest! Here's some clarification on the shot: It is a single image, nothing is composited (only some minor editing in lightroom was done). What I meant in my story with it not being an ongoing eruption was that it was literally 5 shots (of 4 seconds) and the eruption was over. This was the last of the 5 shots, the first 4 were rather heavy on the lava which ended up being mostly over exposed (I had my camera dialed in for previous eruptions that night, which had less lava). The 5 shots combined make for a cool GIF/short clip though (it's on my Instagram @martijnhermans). Location/composition wise this was just above the tree line and some other/connecting mountains which kill the view of the volcano. So at the time it was what I had to work with. If I ever return I want to see if there's other compositions at the same altitude which combines the eruption with nearby cities for example. Thanks again!

Your shot took down both of mine hard. I could have sworn I had this one in the bag. Sounds like an amazing, and well won experience. I can’t imagine climbing a bouncing with that camera/glass/tripod combo; and staking out these shots. But it really paid off.
@Martijnhermans15 жыл бұрын
@@chase.wilson Thanks Chase! Great shots yourself. It's an amazing location and opportunity to photograph, one of the toughest but most rewarding for me personally. An eruption like that gives you the chills like nothing else can, with a deep rumbling and ground that is shaking, while you're spamming your (wired) remote trigger to catch that flashing lava in the close distance.

The only thing I think would be a good change is to have more comments when a photo is voted low. It's just rating theres no critique other than the photos picked for the video.
@FStoppers5 жыл бұрын
Yeah but we could never require people to leave comments. When images are simply 1s or even 2s, it takes so much commentary to describe what would make it better. At some point the comments could be "yeah I wouldn't shoot this subject at all" and what good does that do? The ratings isn't meant to be a critique, that's what the video itself is for. -P
@tombeckman5 жыл бұрын
@@FStoppers I definitely agree. You can't require. My reason for that is it kills some true honesty. If someone really thinks something truly sucks but wants there opinion to be anonymous that can't happen. I would maybe just suggest encouraging people more to give there opinion rather than just rating a 1 or 2 star. If my image is bad I don't want to be lied to but I'd be very interested in a slight reason why. Ya know

I've never understood why the "top rated" photo gets a tutorial. Shouldn't the lowest rated photo get the tutorial? They would benefit WAY more.
@tykeboy165 жыл бұрын
Because they've earned it. Rewarding the lowest rated image would result in thousands of snapshots submitted in every contest.
@thegeb755 жыл бұрын
@@tykeboy16 Then make both tutorials random, not based on rating. That would actually help the rating system from deliberate down voting.
@tykeboy165 жыл бұрын
@@thegeb75 The top rated image should get a tutorial. They earned one. The tutorials aren't designed for just beginners. In fact most beginners probably wouldn't grasp half the material in the tutorials. I don't really think it would change much, the best images would still be the best images and that's what they would mainly put in the video.
