Thank you so much for such an informative video. I want to ask how to teach pencil grip to a child with autism who also has poor fine motor skills. What strategies do you think should be used?

My son holds the pencil in a tripod grasp, with the pencil sticking up between his index and middle fingers. Any thoughts on that?
@TheOTGuide2 жыл бұрын
Hey Amy! From your description, it sounds like your son uses an adapted tripod grasp which is completely functional :) Feel free to send me a picture to my email if you're concerned about it (TheOTGuide@gmail.com)

@TheOTGuide3 жыл бұрын
Hey Shireen! Treatment for these two issues varies greatly, however I touched on them briefly in my other video here towards the end: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fny7Z6uVqJh0iMk If you want more specific information, shoot me an email at TheOTGuide@gmail.com and I'll get back to you ASAP! @@TheOTGuide No problem! I was looking for a resource to give to teachers on when we should intervene with writing grasps with recommendations. Great video!

Hi, my son is almost 10. He never held his pencil correctly and when he was younger I was told not to correct his grasp because he would eventually learn how to hold it. His handwriting is sloppy and he holds the pencil so weird, I’ve never seen anything like it. I’ve tried to get him to hold it the correct way and he says it hurts to hold it like that and that he can’t write like that.

Hi there! My apologies for the very VERY delayed response! Pencil grasp is something that needs to be explicitly taught (usually in pre-k or kinder) otherwise kids make up their own ways to hold the pencil, like your son did. At this point, I'd let your son hold it whichever way is most comfortable and motivating for him, and then switch your focus to typing since typing is more functional in today's society anyway! I highly HIGHLY recommend using typing.com to teach typing - it's motivating, fun, and kids love it.

@@TheOTGuide thank you so much. Thankfully, he does typing in school every day.

What is the right age to use pencil grip?
@TheOTGuide7 ай бұрын
Hey there! Thank you so much for watching and visiting my channel! There is no "right age" per se, but I always recommend trying different pencil grips if your youngster isn't having success without one. Before you have them use a grip, make sure to explicitly teach them to hold a pencil, and let them practice without one for a while. I made a video on how to teach kids to hold a pencil a while back, here it is- kzbin.info/www/bejne/m6KUmZ-Yntmqe9U

Hi Dana I have a 6 year old who uses the full hand grasp and is left handed. He has always had great control, never colouring outside the lines, draws amazing pictures and is learning to form his letters correctly. I know you said if his writing is legible, which it is, we shouldn’t worry about changing it. Is it expected that he will eventually change himself to a ‘normal’ grip?
@TheOTGuide Жыл бұрын
Hi there!! This is a great question! I know adults who use the full-hand palmar grasp like your son and they are totally functional with it. I think it depends on your kiddo and if he's open to changing it. If he's okay with changing it you can teach him how to do it through modeling, or even give him a pencil grip (I recommend the "claw" pencil grip) to hold his fingers in the correct place. My recommendation is to have a conversation with your son, see if he's open to change, and go from there! If he is, great (expect it to be a little clumsy at first) and if he isn't, that's fine too.

what do you do if a 10 year old wont write correctly?
@TheOTGuide3 жыл бұрын
Hi there! Thanks for your question. Treatment for this depends on the underlying reason why the student isn't writing correctly. Can this student hold a pencil ok? Do they know how to form the letters? What part of their writing is incorrect? Feel free to email me at TheOTGuide@gmail.com and I'll get back to you ASAP! -Dana. :)
