That 2nd tip is very handy. My daughter grab a marker remove the lid and struggle to hold it near the tip so she would always hold far away from the tip and I usually remind her to hold correctly. Very useful tip she will find easier to hold bear the tip. Thank you

Thank you for this video! What activities do you recommend to strengthen their pinchers? My son can pick up small items off the table like rice and even little sesame seeds, but I still feel his pinchers need more work. Again thank you for the video!!
@TheOTGuide4 жыл бұрын
Hey Sana! Thank you so much for your question. I love how you are already challenging your son's pincer grasp by having him pick up rice and sesame seeds! Have him continue to do activities that involve manipulating small objects - peeling stickers, ripping and crumpling tissue paper into small balls, and pulling apart cotton balls are all some examples. To strengthen his pincers, you could also have him practice squeezing clothespins to pick up pom-poms, pinching playdoh/resistive theraputty, putting pasta into the holes of a pasta strainer, etc. Thank you for your question and don't hesitate to reach out if you have any more. Good luck! -Dana

I'm trying to get me 5yr old to hold pencil correctly she does not like writing or drawing. May I send you a video of her using a pencil so you could help me with s strategy?
@TheOTGuide2 жыл бұрын
Hey there! I'm so sorry for my delay! Thank you so much for watching my video. My first step with your youngster would be to try playing with different mediums to help her develop an interest in drawing (not so much writing at this point, especially if she has an aversion to holding a pencil) . You can try playing with paint, dry erase markers, markers that feature cool characters on them, or even those "flavored" markers that have a cool smell to them. My reasoning is if you can get her interested in drawing and coloring, then she will naturally practice drawing and coloring and her grasp might just naturally develop! And sure, shoot me an email at TheOTGuide@gmail.com and I'll see if I have any extra tips. Best, Dana

Thanks for the video! My 4 year old loves to draw and color and he usually colors/draws for 30 minutes to an hour in the morning just because he wants to... His grip is correct BUT he typically doesn't rest his hand on the paper as he colors/draws, and I think he lacks control because of this. Is that a skill you would work on or does it develop naturally with time/age?
@TheOTGuide3 жыл бұрын
Hey Rachel! That is so cool your son loves to draw and that he already has a functional grasp! Don't worry about him not resting his hand on the paper while he's coloring (that's totally age appropriate). As he gets a little bit older and develops more hand strength, that is something he will eventually do on his own :D It sounds like you have a young artist in the making! -Dana

Hi, I am from India, my son is 4.7 years, kids younger than him are expected to write without dots here and even they are doing it. My son can hold pencil and colour through tripod grip however is unable to write on dots correctly and even standing lines go here and there. How can bring the pencil control?
@TheOTGuide3 жыл бұрын
Hi there! My apologies for the delay. It's really awesome your son can hold a pencil with a functional tripod grasp and color! That's a huge victory. Continuing to expose your son to activities to coloring, drawing, and writing (really any activity that involves a writing utensil) is my #1 recommendation to increase pencil control. I also recommend daily exposure to fine motor activities to increase the strength and coordination in his finger tips (peeling stickers, manipulating playdoh, squeezing glue, stringing beads, using scissors, ripping paper, etc.) Make sure to keep activities fun and light, so your fun has a positive association with using a pencil.

My son could hold the pencil right but now is refusing to hold it as he should
@TheOTGuide4 жыл бұрын
Hmm. It might be because learning how to hold a pencil correctly is hard and uncomfortable at first, and most little ones just prefer holding it with their whole fist! It takes some time for them to get used to it. Keep giving your youngster fine motor activities so they develop more coordination on the precision side of their hand (thumb, index, and ring finger) and over time they will get more comfortable holding a pencil correctly :D
