This is a quick video explanation in response to an increase in emails all pertaining to a single or related question.
"When should I just polish my paint instead of compounding...OR should I simply clay my paint?" This is an actual question I received, so I thought I would shoot a video to kind of give a better idea of how these different processes work together, YET are very different. Hope this clears up a bit of confusion. (However, this video is very basic and much more sophisticated techniques can be used and "rules" I talk about can be bent in more advanced scenarios.) This car is a Honda Fit.

Larry your videos are great, what bothers me (and it's on many, many other detailing videos too) is the inaccurate and sometimes 'dangerous to your paint' info and 'advice' given out by others in the comments section. One of your commenters claimed that clay barring and compounding do the 'exact same job'! They do not guys! Don't clay your car every few weeks, it WILL scratch your paint, as Larry says, do it rarely like going to the Emergency Room (A&E here in the UK). Simply put, if you are going to compound and polish your car then ALWAYS clay it beforehand and if you are going to clay your car (because the surface feels rough as *****) then be prepared to compound and polish it afterwards to remove the scratches you will have just put into the clearcoat (another correct terminology issue, it's clearcoat we are compounding, polishing, cleaning and protecting NOT paint!) If you get paint colour on any of your pads, microfibres etc then I'm afraid you have a serious issue on your hands! Unless you have a classic car from pre-clearcoat era car painting of course. If you are going to compound and polish your car make sure it is COMPLETELY clean, use chemical decontamination at some stage (fallout remover, APC, citrus degreaser, tar spot removers etc- whichever ones float your boat) as well as mechanical decontamination (clay barring) and use a panel wipe each time before compounding or polishing to remove any excess residue from claying or any previous products used. Good luck guys! (Maybe practice on an old hood/bonnet from a breaker yard!)

That's a good idea. I was just saying there needs to be like a one-day course that you can sign up for where you learn how to do these things properly for your vehicle so you're not having to pay each time to have it done by someone else. I know I won't get as good of results but I feel like at this point I just need to hand Compound and polish.

Thanks for another awesome video Larry. You give the best possible explanation of the differences between polishing and compounding and the neccesity of compounding to remove scratches and restoring the paint finish followed by polishing to refine the surface and deepen and bring out the shine/gloss. You really bring these sometimes difficult to understand topics to the masses so everyone has a good understanding.

Clay bars or compound, not before, not after, not with. They do the same exact thing- remove a thin layer of paint, along with dirt & grime. Compound is easier and faster with an orbital polisher.

my wife's care is about 6 years old and has only been washed. I was going to do clay bar (it needs it) then compound, then use touch up paint for the areas that didn't come out with compound. After touch up paint dried, I was going to use polish to get it to pop and in theory to help blend in the touch up paint, and last add a wax. And I on the right track? Will these steps bring it back to a new like state?

Same here. I have a brand new truck that doesn't need compounding. I usually wash it then apply a pure carnauba paste wax. Wish I could find an as good alternative since applying and removing the wax by hand is a pain in the ass. There must be machine type waxes out there.

@littlerhino2006
@littlerhino2006 8 жыл бұрын
+Harzman01 Ultimate protection would be a 3M clear bra, they're ridiculously expensive though. Second would be a 'nano' coating topped with sealant then wax. Tertiary to that would be a sealant topped with a carnauba wax and last would be just a carnauba or whatever is mixed in with a soap. All these products do is add layers of procreation to the clear coat, which is a protector in of its self. Wax and sealants can be applied by a machine with an extremely soft pad at low speed. The goal being not to be abrasive but to just make sure the product makes into the microscopic crevices left even by the most refined polish. Speed should be kept low to minimize heat build up so the product doesn't breakdown before it even sees the sun.
@littlerhino2006
@littlerhino2006 8 жыл бұрын
+Harzman01 but like +Patrick94GSR mentioned even a new vehicle will need some paint correction before adding a bunch of layers of protection. You would be mortified to see how they washed new vehicles at dealerships I've worked at. Mud covered truck followed by a brand new Hellcat, with the same shitty brush 😑

Sorry but "why you wanna polish your car..is it a showcar?" Is nit nice to say.. you dont need a million dolar car and not the car price makes you care about your car. If someone likes a fiat multipla he can care about it as much as a ferrari or a "show car" owner (who actually cares so much about his car that he have to pay someone rather than taking his time) so please dont be stupid...for someone like me an 1500$ golf mk3 worth the effort too :) A proud mk3 owner :)

I asked that question so you can evaluate what you want to accomplish. Are you removing some scratches, are you competing in a car show, are you trying to win the concours D'elegance, etc. that's all. It doesn't matter if it's a $1,000 car or $1,000,000 you just need to have a goal in mind so you know how much work you have ahead of you and what process it will require to achieve your goal. Hope that clarifies it.

Thanks for this video Larry. Although I have an extensive knowledge of this topic and many others, my customers do not. I will use this video as a tool so they can have an easier introduction into detailing lingo and understand what I'm talking about when I'm recommending services. Great work as always.

I've been searching for info on detailing as I'm a newb and I found your videos. Really like how you explain things. You don't sound like an infomercial and give real world advice. Keep on making good videos. I'm gonna go beat my head against the wall cause I can't figure out what regiment to use for washing, paint sealing, waxing, glass...Oh and then there's the interior...

Great vid Larry! I get the whole terminology thing, so often I'm out waxing or freshening the sealant on my car and people say I'll wear the paint out! Know your products and understand why you need them not just cos you herd about them

Thank you very much for this video, in fact I was mismatching polish and compound, now i understand that compound is for deeper marks, while polish is for very fine halo and compounding veil removal.

If you have never clayed your car, and your paint still feels rough after washing it you should clay it to get the bounded contaminates off. You don't have to clay your car every time you wash it , there is no need. If you you feel that your paint is pretty smooth after you wash it and all you want to do is remove your swirl marks and minor scratches and make the paint pop again then compound then polish and then wax DONE. Great Video and explanation Thank You!
