Should You Polish Your Car's Paint After Using a Clay Bar? In this video, I’ll be discussing the process of clay barring your paint to remove embedded contamination, and if machine polishing is necessary afterwards, to remove any potential marring, as clay bars are abrasive in nature and can potentially leave minor marring.

Great info Pan, thank you. You know, I've spent 30+ years in the auto service department. I have no fear with the mechanical stuff. The scary paint stuff however, is another story. With your help, I've completely lost my fear of touching my paint for fear of scratching it. In the past couple months, I've just begun to "come out of my shell". I've wet sanded, paint corrected, bought a DA polisher, and applied a graphene coating. All because of your videos. Thank you sir. Oh, and a tip of the hat from a fellow audiophile. Love your audio and HT rooms! Would love to see more of that content too.- Bob

It probably was covered but relating to ceramic spray coating. I’ve found final removal / final polishing is best performed with a very slightly dampened microfiber cloth . This is especially so on dark paint. Always work in the shade preferably inside.

Yes after washing and rinsing, when it’s time to dry the paint with your microfiber drying towel, always use a quick detail spray or drying aid. That will act as a lubricant preventing marring during the drying stage, all while boosting gloss and slickness. I have a video on my favourite drying aids here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hIC3f5iaZZmrj6csi=3YFDKaTkswvfecI6 You can see how I wash my car here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jmHQpKSbpN93eLcsi=PIMrhQVpzVb7p1Ty

A sad story to share, but you know we all learnt from mistakes and hope this will help this community. Recently my workplace car park is doing reconstruction on the roof, even though the workers blocked some of the spaces, but the “powder/dust/minerals” was still blown through wind and eventually landed on my paint. (My paint is protected by adam’s advanced graphene coating.) I then washed my car within 1 day, unfortunately those contamination cannot be washed off. So I have to clay the car. I use DIY detail rinseless wash to pre-rinse, rinse off with water, re-apply and wash with ultra black sponge. Afterwards, using carpro iron x combined with carpro decon towel, with no pressure at all to decontaminate the whole vehicle. Those contaminations came off in less than 5 passes. Unfortunately when I realise there were some tiny white dots (I believe the roof paint dust) on my decon towel (not inside the waffle cut out, but on the actual black synthetic material), it was too late. Even though I use one side of the towel per panel and rinse it in my rinseless bucket. I still see light love marks on the paint. The only option left for me is to polish all the coating off and re-apply a new coating. I encourage everyone, be patience my friend and do a test spot if you are claying.

Great topic Pan as people are often confused on the steps to take. A tip I learned from Miranda is to place the clay bar in a cup of warm water before you begin. This way the clay bar is easier to work with. I live ten minutes from the airport and the planes flying overhead leave a lot of contamination on my vehicles. I have to use iron remover on the back of the vehicles monthly. It just depends on your environment how much contamination you receive. Thank you for another great video!

John from White Details from the UK also does this with the clay bar. I'm in Trinidad in the Caribbean and I also use that trick to properly soften up the clay bar even in out 32 degree C climate. However now with the DIY Details synthetic clay towels its so much easier and safer for the paint that I typically use those especially on light contamination.

Okay! This is great. Another great video. I have always wanted to know how often to clay since I started detailing my daily driver this past summer. I dabbled in clay bar-ing the car and I have done it only twice so far. The last one was yesterday followed by Turtle Wax One Step. I used Mother's California Gold clay bar and it MARRED the paint with heavy swirls. So my question, do I need a synthetic clay media in case car is not ceramic coated or should I keep using regular clay bar for maintenance washes in future?

Hey Pan, great video as always. One thing I've always heard about polishing is that it removes the factory clear coat. Just by the nature of what you achieve (removing scratches, restoring shine of paint) I'm assuming some clear coat is removed to reveal a shiny surface after polished. Is this something that we should be worried about, and how often should we polish?
@PanTheOrganizer
@PanTheOrganizer 5 ай бұрын
That is correct. Machine polishing (also known as paint correction) is mechanical abrasion from the pad, and chemical abrasion from the polishing compound liquid (that contains abrasives) that will level the paint, remove defects (swirls, scratches and oxidation) to reveal a glossy surface, free of defects, and has better clarity and depth to the finish. So yes you are removing a thin layer of clear coat each time you polish, especially if you start with a heavier cutting compound. Just using a light finishing polish doesn't remove as much clear coat (but won't correct as much). On a new car, with paint that hasn't been damaged over time, there is no real worries about over-polishing, as you wouldn't polish your paint many times each year. Safe washing and drying methods should allow you to go over a year or two without polishing. How many times you can polish paint is unknown as each paint is different in the type of clear coat (soft, medium, hard) and how thick the paint is. Each car manufacturer uses different paints, and different overall thicknesses. Modern paints are usually three layers: primer, base coat (that's the color) and clear coat (the transparent glossy top layer). For more details on paint correction, I highly recommend that you watch my paint correction tutorial for beginners here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/q6TXhXiMfLKCiqs You'll understand everything once you watch it.

Hi, I have recently purchased a 13 year old BMW that had a $4500 ceramic coat applied maybe about 5 or so years ago. Arctic white, it seems to have dirt stick to it. How would you recommend bringing back the mirror finish ? I just bought a clay bar & and expensive spray ceramic coat. I currently don’t own a machine polisher. After claying, is there a manual option before any protection coating please ?

Hey Pan, love your content. Quick question? 1 - When your brother applied AvalonKing product, he did all the prep except the machine polish. Was it skipped for the sake of time? or is it really not necessary? That's the part where you other videos about polishing sort of seem to contradict. 2 - Can you do a video on what's the first thing to do when you buy a new car, specially a factory ordered one where it is presumed there hasn't been enough time since it was painted? I recall another video when you mentioned it could be bad for the paint to apply IPA so early on. Thanks!

First, welcome to my channel. You discovered one of the biggest car detailing channels on KZbin as we surpassed 940,000 subscribers and we have over 124 million views! I have been detailing for 26 years and I love to share my knowledge and passion with my viewers. You found the right channel to help you learn everything about detailing. Hehe, just by the way, your questions are by no means "quick questions". They take time to reply. But I'll try my best to respond. Keep in mind that with almost 1 million subscribers, I receive thousands of messages daily on KZbin, so I can't always give long replies, but here goes: 1. Just to clarify, there's no contradiction. After 26 years of detailing, I have enough experience that I never contradict myself. You must have misinterpreted the information you hear, as it can be confusing at times when trying to assimilate new things. Back to your question on why we skipped polishing my brother's car's paint. It's just a case by case. Keep in mind that machine polishing removes a thin layer of the clear coat every time you polish. So you should only polish when needed. When does your paint need polishing? That's a long discussion, but in a nutshell, these are scenarios where you would want to look into polishing: - your paint has tons of swirls, scratches and oxidation - your paint looks dull and needs a big enhancement in gloss and clarity (machine polishing adds more gloss compared to any paint protection) - you have some protection on the paint, and want to ensure 100% removal as you plan on applying a true ceramic coating (the ones in glass bottles) as those need to bond directly to a virgin clear coat, without any interference from any previous protection In my brother's case, when we applied the AvalonKing, the vehicle was still fairly new, barely a year old, and the paint was still in very very good condition. Almost no scratches or swirls, and we were certain there was no previous protection left on the surface after all the prep steps anyways, so in the sake of preserving the clear coat, it wasn't necessary to polish the paint. That's why. 2. Again, you seem a bit confused. A new car, from the factory, by the time it gets delivered to you from the dealership, is ready to detail from day 1. As soon as you take delivery, you should actually fully detail it, and protect it. The only time you wouldn't detail a vehicle, is if it has be REPAINTED by a body shop. In that case, a freshly repainted vehicle needs 2 months of nothing applied to the paint, so the paint finishes its gassing out phase. The only thing you could do during those 2 months is wash the vehicle with a pH neutral soap. Don't add any protection on the paint during those two months. Also, a notes concerning brand new cars. A new car is never new until it's properly detailed: - at the factory, the paint defects are often corrected quickly by rotary polishing which can leave marks and holograms, so polishing corrects those, before you lock that in long term with a ceramic coating for example. - vehicles are then transported by truck, train and boat so they are exposed to the elements, industrial fallout, brake dust, rail dust, etc - vehicles are often left at boat docks (when transported by boat) or in exterior parking lots for weeks or months, again being exposed to the elements - at the dealership, the vehicles are almost always poorly prepped using the same dirty water that was used for all the cars on a given day, and poor washing and drying methods leading to swirls and scratches - at the dealership, a layer of cheap wax or paint sealant is usually applied to attempt to make the paint glossy prior to delivery. It's crucial to remove any previous protection before you apply a ceramic coating, as coatings need to bond directly to a virgin clear coat. If you only plan on applying a regular carnauba wax or paint sealant though, you could decide to skip machine polishing, as those protectants can be applied over existing protection and it's not as crucial to prep the paint as well. I explain all of this in this popular video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/h5jSqqV5Ypp2g8U So you can better visualize the new car prep process, here are the steps I perform on a brand new car for my customers: Mercedes S 580: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jKLCpZmZrNesjKssi=whord2_UEFSg28UW Aston Martin Vantage: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hXzKkmavj7uHp9E Volvo XC60: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qqenc3Wbo82MfKM Tesla Model Y: kzbin.info/www/bejne/naDLnKZurbVohLs Porsche 911 Carrera: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aJTOmpysl6ukqZY Mercedes AMG GT63S matte black: kzbin.info/www/bejne/m4abq5pnob2pjrssi=oGxoCp8PWt7gTncV Audi Q7: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qmirdHWJi9OcsK8 BMW M6 Gran Coupe: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Zp2maqivgL2mbrM BMW M340i: kzbin.info/www/bejne/m6W7mX2Elqtje6c Audi RS3: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bGWUnnSAm7B3gq8 Golf R: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oKOUappqhbx9qc0

Hey Pan! I’m planning on giving my car a a really good correction and reapplication of the ceramic coating. I’m sure you know that lots of your viewers, myself included simply don’t have the time to put 20 hours of detailing into a weekend around work, family and life in general. I was planning on tackling this bit by bit over a few weeks, so a decontamination wash and clay to start and I’ll try and allow time to polish and then coat perhaps a quarter to a third of the car, then week by week another wash and more of the correction jobs until the whole thing is done. I’m using scholl s20 where needed but mostly a primer polish carpro essence before coating with Gyeon can coat. I’ll be on the lookout for any contaminants that build up on areas yet to be polished and coated week by week, and treat as needed, but can you anticipate any other issues of doing it this way? Thanks!

@PanTheOrganizer 5 ай бұрын
I wouldn't recommend proceeding like that, at all. If you don't want to do everything the same day, that's fine. But if you are to separate the project in multiple days, do them in sequence. Day 1: Wash with a decon soap, then iron remover, then claybar. Day 2: Wash the car, dry it. Then do the machine polishing steps needed. At the end of polishing, do an IPA wipe or use a paint prep spray to remove polishing oils. After this day, don't go too long before you apply the paint protection, as your clear coat is exposed to the elements. Day 3: Wash the car, dry it. Do another round of paint prep spray or IPA solution to wipe the paint and get it ready for the coating. And apply the ceramic coating on the entire vehicle. It's crucial to apply the coating to the entire vehicle the same day, as you shouldn't wash a freshly coated car for the first 7-14 days after application.

As long as you don't work in direct sunlight and don't let iron removers dry on the surface, they won't damage the plastics. My parents have a Subaru Forester with tons of plastic cladding and using an iron remover correctly never stained or damaged the plastics. You wouldn't necessarily spray the plastics directly, but it's normal that some overspray will go on the trim, that's normal.

Great info! Question: If you are not going to do a ceramic coating after polishing, would you still recommend wiping your vehicle with an IPA?
@PanTheOrganizer
@PanTheOrganizer 5 ай бұрын
After polishing you’d always finish by applying some form of paint protection. If it’s not a coating, then it will be a wax or paint sealant. Although not as crucial to use an IPA or paint prep spray before applying a regular wax or sealant, it’s still a good idea, as it will remove polishing oils and residue and promote a better bond of the protection to the clear coat. But it’s for sure crucial before applying a coating as those need to bond directly to a virgin clear coat without any interference from polishing oils or old wax residue.

Hi Pan, I was hoping I could ask a quick question. I had my white car ceramic coated last year. After a year in the Florida sun the hood has some water spots, what looks like some bug residue, and just doesn’t look great if you look at the right angle. The detailer is saying next time he’ll clay the hood, and if that doesn’t work, then try polishing it. Am I correct in saying both of those can damage the coating? And if so, what could be done to fix the hood? He used shine supply beadlock pro in case that matters. Thanks!

You are absolutely correct in thinking that. Traditional clay bars are abrasive and can damage the coating. If he meant to use a synthetic perforated decontamination towel (synthetic clay) that's ok on a coated vehicle. That's not abrasive. And for sure, machine polishing a coating is what removes a coating. You're mechanically abrading the surface with the polishing compound and pad. That is designed to remove ceramic coatings. Unless he meant using a primer polish that can correct minor defects on coatings, like CarPro Essence+ (not the regular Essence). So hopefully your detailer knows what he's doing, and he understands these things. Sometimes coatings are just "clogged" by mineral buildup, water spots and limescale. So you need to chemically decontaminate them with a high pH snow foam on the pre-wash (to remove road film), and acidic pH soap for the hand wash (to remove minerals and limescale). That usually rejuvenates a coating and restores the properties assuming the coating is still in good shape. In theory yes, but that's assuming you use it properly with good lubrication from a clay lube. Always test on an inconspicuous area first. And only clay if the paint actually needs need, i.e. if it feels like it has contaminants.

Hi, Your videos are an excellent source for detailing information. I have a 2022 Black Porsche and purchased The Rag Company - Ultra Clay Decontamination Mitt along with their lube.The car was washed and I sprayed a small section with lube, lightly used the clay mitt in a vertical motion with a good amount of lube. The mitt left light vertical scratches in the clear coat!? I thought that The Rag Company - Ultra Clay Decontamination Mitt would not scratch? Any suggestion(s) on how to avoid this issue? I didn't want to buff after claying. Respectfully Jay

You always have to test on an inconspicuous area first. Black paint, as you know, is very unforgiving. I could never buy a black vehicle, my OCD would constantly be triggered hehe. I don't know about the TRC lube. Or exactly how you did things. Did you first wash the car, and then iron remover, and then clay? You will have to reach out to them, as they are better suited to help their customers troubleshoot on things of that nature.

Received this quick reply from The Rag Company Customer Care: Hello Jay! Thank you for contacting The Rag Company. I understand that you have some questions regarding our Ultra Clay Mitt, and I would be happy to answer them for us! One thing to note with any of our Ultra Clay products, is that you want to break in your brand new clay media on a glass surface, before moving to the paintwork. To do this, simply spray a generous amount of clay lubricant onto the clay, as well as the glass, and begin working in the clay tool to remove any excess material that may be left from the manufacturing process. Once you have honed your clay, you will be totally okay to begin your clay decontamination process. Something I like to recommend to customers, is that there is no such thing as too much clay lube, so feel free to keep generously adding more while doing your clay decon. Also, you do not need to apply a lot of pressure when doing your clay decon, simply guide the tool with your hand, and let the clay do all of the work for you! I hope I was able to answer your questions today Jay! Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions or concerns. -Lucas - Customer Care Team The Rag Company Outstanding service and my error appears to be not seasoning the clay mitt on the windshield! Yes always break-in new clay media on glass before the first use. A Rupes yellow foam pad and Rupes yellow polish will likely remove the marring you have. No heavy compounding needed. This polish: bit.ly/49COjaL This pad: bit.ly/3QcQSIU

Great vid Pan! Question, I saw a video from the DYI guys where they did a ceramic coating with a new car without doing a polishing. I just bought a new car 2 weeks ago and want to do a graphene coating (either Adam’s Graphene Advanced or McKee’s Graphene - which one do you recommend?). Do you still feel that I should or don’t need to do the polishing step? Thanks!

Having flawless paint with zero swirls and scratches is not important for a coating. What is CRUCIAL is to get the surface clean, decontaminated and free of any previous protection. A coating needs to bond directly to a virgin clear coat, free of contamination and without any interference of previous waxes/sealants. It doesn't matter is swirls and scratches are there. But for many people, if they are going to seal the finish and lock it in for years with a ceramic coating, and do all that work, they will often take the time to do paint correction as well and get the paint to a point they are happy with, and then apply the coating. That's why in my coating jobs for most customers that you can see in my full detailing videos, customers take the full A to Z package including paint correction to make sure their paint looks flawless, for those who value having a great looking vehicle. But the coating doesn't care if it's applied on perfect paint or paint that has defects. That being said, a new car is never new until it's properly detailed. - at the factory, the paint defects are often corrected quickly by rotary polishing which can leave marks and holograms, so polishing corrects those, before you lock that in long term with a ceramic coating for example. I explain all of this in this popular video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/h5jSqqV5Ypp2g8U So you can better visualize the new car prep process, here are the steps I perform on a brand new car for my customers: RS6 Avant Performance: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gma2gmOQfq92oJIsi=mcQiMs9HBLlaqjGK Mercedes S 580: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jKLCpZmZrNesjKssi=whord2_UEFSg28UW Aston Martin Vantage: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hXzKkmavj7uHp9E Volvo XC60: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qqenc3Wbo82MfKM Tesla Model Y: kzbin.info/www/bejne/naDLnKZurbVohLs Porsche 911 Carrera: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aJTOmpysl6ukqZY Audi Q7: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qmirdHWJi9OcsK8

Thanks Pan for the extremely detailed answer! I watched the video and the one with the Porche 911. Just excellent work you do. I saw all the products you used for the 911. I had said that the 2 company's kits (which include everything needed to make things simpler) was McKee's Graphene or Adam's Graphene Advanced. You didn't address that part of my question. Any thoughts? Should I not consider those 2 for a complete kit of another brand? Thanks!

@PanTheOrganizer
@PanTheOrganizer 5 ай бұрын
Yes you can clay glass. Glass, when viewed through a microscope, is porous. It has hills and valleys, just like the clear coat on your paint. And contamination can accumulate in those. There are many things that can contaminate paintwork: brake dust, rail dust, industrial fallout, road film, tar, glue residue, minerals from water spots or salts on roads, tree sap, bird droppings, paint overspray, etc

Hi Pan, Do I need to use IPA wipe after Clay and without Polish step?
@PanTheOrganizer
@PanTheOrganizer 5 ай бұрын
Not necessarily, it depends on what steps you are doing after claying. If you plan on applying a protection, then yes it can be a good idea, to help promote a better bond of the protection to the clear coat. For regular waxes or sealants, an IPA isn't required per say. A good idea, but not absolutely a must. Before you apply a ceramic coating though, you must make sure the surface is 100% clean and free of any previous protection, so if there is some protection left, you have to do at least a light machine polish step, followed by an IPA wipe or paint prep spray before applying the coating. Coatings need to bond directly to a virgin clear coat.

@PanTheOrganizer 5 ай бұрын
Hi Matt. Congrats on getting a new car. What did you buy? If your paint is near flawless, and doesn't have any scratches or swirls, and looks good to you, there is no need to polish the paint. So you could simply wash the car, use an iron remover to remove brake dust, see if it needs claying to remove further embedded contamination (if the paint feels glass smooth you can skip the clay stage), then apply your choice of a wax or sealant, or a combo of both. Sealant first (for durability) and finish with a nice wax for added warmth and gloss. Here's a great sealant wax combo video I made: kzbin.info/www/bejne/kKWsfaKKgLiLp5osi=xfQqAmp07ccsTZQc And you can check my more recent video on the best liquid waxes and sealants here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/r6aroppjdsenmqssi=dp3JVnyIuv6YzU5f If you are planning on applying a ceramic coating, then it's a bit different, as you'd want to at least do one light machine polishing step to ensure removal of any previous protection, and then wipe the paint with an IPA prep spray to remove polishing oils and residue, and then apply the coating. I have many tutorials on applying ceramic coatings.
