I do lawns in northern utah. I usually cut umy lawns shortest the 3rd or 4th week of October. Then I raise it up a hair to mow the leaves up. I sometimes do my last cut 1st week November, while a few lawns I mow till 1st week December. Then for spring, I cut my lawns short again by St Patrick day

Hey P&LG, I just had my lawn aerated this morning, and temperatures are typically in the mid-50s, but going lower as the week goes by. While my back lawn was originally sod with Tall Fescue, it is now primarily Bermuda, while my front lawn is a struggling Tall Fescue. I have decided to go Bermuda on both, because Bermuda has made significant inroads into the front lawn-and it can look pretty good while not requiring nearly as much effort. So, my plan was to aerate today, which I did, and follow that up with overseeding Bermuda everywhere, followed by a Winterizer lawn fertilizer. After a quick search, I am learning that it is not good to overseed Bermuda in the fall, because it’s already going dormant. Yikes! My question: Should I simply apply a Winterizer fertilizer now and then overseed Bermuda in late Spring when the temperatures are bringing Bermuda out of dormancy? I’ve also done a HEAVY scarifying on my narrow strip lawn between houses, and so it’s mostly dirt now. Got some advice? Thanks in advance!

You could always plant some perrenial rye for the winter time and it'll look good. If it were me I would plant some kentucky bluegrass (barvette cultivar) now and get it going. Once it sets in it plays nice with the bermuda. You'll end up with a nice summer grass and the kbg will come back in the winter with minimal transitional issues.

Hi Ginja, I love the fact you have a video for every situation, or at least the most common but, very good, I said excellent because they go to the point and the most important they produce good results. Thank you, happy Holydays. It's getting cold, we're on 30s and 40s and first snow last week. I have a friend in Utah and she told me last week you had 2 feet, I guess because of the mountains ⛰️✨🎶

Would you recommend mowing more frequently as you're lowering the lawn so it gets used to a little lower mow height before you drop it down another notch? I havne't seen some of your older videos and just saw the one where you said Bermuda was a noxious / invasive plant in Utah, then on this page, I see an add for Bermudagrass seed - too funny. I considered Bermuda for my lawn, but decided on going with Zoysia because of how invasive Bermuda can be, and my neighbor currently has the best lawn on the block. This time next year though, after a bit of top dressing and transferring plugs, I hope to have a nice lawn too, but with Zoysia versus his Fescue.

Would you recommend this for St. Augustine in Louisiana? I usually keep mine at 4". It's Dec. now and grass is still green . Should I start mowing at 3" for winter or continue mowing at 4"?
@pestandlawnginja
@pestandlawnginja 6 жыл бұрын
I carry a meat thermometer and watch the ground temps. Once you get down under 50 degrees ground temps st augustine will start to go dormant. You can treat warm season grasses a little different if the ground temps plummet and the grass is completely dormant you can go straight to your short cut if you're confident the grounds temps won't rise. If you have ground temps that cascade in temperature like I do here in Utah you'll want to step it down as opposed to going straight to a short mow.

We actually mow higher (6cm) at the end of the season and mix in some cocos based soilconditioner. This gives the rootbase extra insulation against the elements while keeping it airy. It also provides the starting nutrients and a healthier tatchlayer in the beginning of the next season.

Very cool. I've never heard of that brand before. Glad you found something that works well.
@C7pherr

Was looking into a better translation, turns out it's called cocopeat. Will probably sound more familiar. Mix I tend to use has a ratio of 40% in it. Rest is organic nutrients. Could use pure cocopeat or maybe peatmoss instead if you don't want extra nutrients. However the organic matter will eventuelly attract earthworms and make the soil airy and thus create better drainage.
@C7pherr
@C7pherr 6 жыл бұрын
If intrested, the applience rate of the mix we use is about 40l per 20 square metres for repeated yearly use. For the first time applience we tend to go a little heavier (+-30%). Might need to detach first if to much dead grass, but we use a monthly coverage with Bacillus sp. and never need to detaching. Brand is called Ecostyle, but only availble in Belgium, Netherlands and Denmark.

true. Ultimately you don't want to cut more than 1/3rd of the plant top off. Which means you may need to mow more than once a week to properly lower your lawn height.

I have a mix of kbg, red fescue, and rye grass, which I maintain at 3 1/2" throughout the summer. This past Sunday, I lowered to 3' and today I'm doing my final cut at 2 1/2". Temps have been mid 40's and next week they'll be consistently upper 30's, which is a bit cooler than the normal average high of 48, here in northern New England. Does this sound like a good plan? And would you throw down a winterizer after the mow?
@pestandlawnginja
@pestandlawnginja 6 жыл бұрын
It's all about the ground temperatures. Cutting down to 2.5" with the blend that you have shouldn't be a problem. If you're noticing a dramatic change in color you may want to mow again at 3" today then proceed to 2.5" in the next 2 to 3 days. If your ground temps are below 40 degrees it won't matter if you cut lower. the blades of grass will already be dormant.

@pestandlawnginja

I don't do my final mow until ground temps are permanently below 40 to 45 degrees. I would focus on micro nutrients and light doses of macro nutrients in the mean time.
