Alex, I agree with you. We will never see an “affordable” Tesla. WHY would they do that? Small return for HUGE headaches.

I trust Elon because 9/10 times he surprises the world and delivers the incredible. Yes it’s often delayed. But as he says, he “specializes in turning the impossible into late”

Elon and Tesla have been very clear that strategically, they think the future is owning the ride, not the car. Their view is that a new low-cost model EV is silly when when TaaS becomes real, as described by RethinkX and Tony Seba. If you don't believe TaaS is coming in the next couple of years, then a new low-cost EV is a good idea. If you believe TaaS is approaching, as Musk clearly does, then the better solution is to accelerate the development of the cyber taxi.

To be fair, I look at the price of the mid-range Model 3 in late 2018 when I bought ours and look at the roughly equivalent range base-Model 3 of today, the price has dropped by about $5 K - and that's without doing a CPI inflation adjustment. Using the US CPI to adjust, the cost is down by ~$15 K (I still have my invoice and compared with the current price.) Back then, Tesla promised a $35 K Model 3, in inflation-adjusted terms, they have more than delivered. So, while I agree that they aren't going to make a $25 K car, $25 K ain't what is was 5 years ago.

FSD is practically impossible. Better off just moving to flying transportation for individuals. Makes more sense than FSD tbh.

The "average" car is out of reach for most people. A long time ago, Tesla did say they would come up with a $25k car, then it was $35k. Clearly, Tesla has given up on a really "affordable" car; and that's okay. Nissan has the Leaf and Chevy has(had) the Bolt. There is a niche that used to be filled by the Corolla, in the ICE world. Some company could make a LOT of money in that segment, but not Tesla.

if FSD can be solved in 3 years time that means FSD is doable. Elon has a history of focusing of doable things, working his people to exhaustion, and achieving the unbelievable. Point being, Tesla will achieve FSD sooner that 3 years time. Which, as Elon says, makes driver driven cars obsolete.
@litchips2 ай бұрын
Maybe 5-10 years. 3 is best case IMO, if software was magically ready today, it would take 3 years to validate it and convince insurers to underwrite the risk. AI engineers are sitting on fat stacks of money and have ample job options, so pushing them to exhaustion is a dicey proposition, and it wouldn't help anyway since it's mostly compute time limited.

Is anyone tracking investments being made by the car industry in new production, in new vehicles? If Elon is correct about FSD being the new normal, what is the point of a car company investing in a new driver driven car?
@FalkonNightsdale2 ай бұрын
Elon claims it's going to be a new normal, but it's not going to be… Yes, there will be a minority of city-dwellers that may have use for cybercabs, but otherwise the closest thing to that would be ocassional use of high level ADAS by tired drivers if cheap enough to get…

You are always behind on I formation. There will not be a 25k car. In its place will be the Cyber cab aka robo taxi. Human less fully autonomous vehicle. MUCH cheaper than an Uber or Lyft. Did you even watch the E robot event? It was very apparent Tesla is moving towards a driverless car that will pick you up and drive you pretty much anywhere you need to go like uber and Lyft without the driver. Along with the robo van/bus and the Tesla bot. That will be the future of the company.
@jhol3102 ай бұрын
That'll never happen. Not safely, effectively and affordably.

In 2022 nearly 60000 cars driven by humans hit deer in Michigan alone. 1 Tesla hitting a deer seems pointless to mention. I am glad that at least you can see that FSD will happen. 3 years from now is 2 years after robotaxi. If Tesla does what the others did to het allowed to use driverless cars for that 2 year period I can see robotaxis hitting the road next year.
@john1701a2 ай бұрын
It's mentioned because FSD is flaunted as being better ordinary emergency braking. Why pay so much extra for something that doesn't deliver?
@JJSmith11002 ай бұрын
@@john1701a Its only about 10 times safer as a human driving so would you prefer all cars having SFD or continue killing 42000 people a year in the US compared to 4000 a year if FSD was the only way of driving allowed. Keep in mind FSD has to compete with incompetent idiots behind the wheel at the moment.

Tesla will only make a small car if it is profitable. At the moment it isn't. The same reason the legacy car makers are saying there is no demand for EV's, they cannot make it for profit so they say there is no demand. They would rather carry on making ICE cars for a profit, for as long as possible.
@springhillfitness68372 ай бұрын
Sadly I agree, due to Elon's delusional FSD timelines he sees no need for a cheap car.

Elon wants driving to be autonomous. Automation and going to Mars are his goals. If somebody wants something they can own or afford they will need buy a ICE. Slows down the transition to renewable energy and EVs. Tesla's mission statement until trump/Musk changes it.
