As innocuous as it seems, it's important to know the map you're attempting to flank on and know it well. The choke points, escape routes and lanes the enemy is likely to be watching. Certain maps like wormhaven and endless Vale are made for flanking whereas Burnout and Javelin are a little riskier because of the intersecting paths a team can take cover on and then counter your flank. Also note that certain weapons are tailor-made for flanking like wave frame GL"s or weapons that don't require aiming like Jotunn. It's also important to call out your flank to your team mates before you go. Let them know exactly where you intend to flank so they can distract and engage the enemy before you get there and light them up. The streamer "terror" is a master at flanking but he's even better at getting back to cover if it fails and that is really the art of flanking. Being able to survive if it goes pear shaped.

Flanking is timing dependent. That covers what you said about not needing surprise factors to do them well. As long as you sync your pressure with your team's engagement you'll be better off regardless of how you flank.

One thing I forget sometimes is that flanking is especially bad in Trials and Showdown. If you flank and die in Survival or Clash, yeah that sucks but maybe you at least got a trade so it kinda evens out. In Trials or Showdown, you might flank and get a pick (or two!) before you die, but the enemy team has control of their rez and your team doesn't have yours. I've had Trials matches where I flanked, killed 2, and left the last guy on almost no HP, but still lost the round because I died and my teammates couldn't stop the rezzes. On the other hand, it makes flanking in those modes that much less expected!

Good stuff, I love flanking but there’s definitely a time to do it and a time to not do it these days! Taking an angle while something is happening is definitely the way though, great tips!
