I SW my first time this year I did learn quickly when it got to warm I moved the into a shader afternoon sun. I would say for a beginner. Keep them damp. I lost a few things. Because they dried out. My corn ponies were 2-3 tall and then they were gone. Ok my bok Choi was to big and it is trying to flower. And some things I planted like Corn and runner beans a week before last frost were find I a raised bed. I also had winged beans but lost that container. Some are small some have grown out of the jugs. Dill , zucchini went crazy. And my mixed poppies went crazy. Some I planted some I’m put I red solo cups to gift to F and F. Because I can’t find space right now for them. It’s been fun but I have some tiny things I want to wait to plant out.

Great tips - first year winter sowing. Opened two spring bloomers already, but will pay attention to watering. Will try to restrain myself and wait to open other jugs! You have amazing variety / so many seeds!

oh my goodness, you just solved a mystery. I couldn't understand why there were random sprouts in my jugs. My father dropped the soil I used for my carrots that didn't germinate at the end of last season near my jugs. Well, I guess the seeds are still viable and those are carrots 😂😂

Esther you have had such great success. I WS about 10-12 containers of flowers and vegs, and lost or forgot to label more than half. Most have come up and I have already planted out 3-4. But I found weeds growing in at least half, and nothing popped up in about 3or 4 containers.

I'm sorry you've had some losses. I always have a few jugs that are duds. One thing I recommend checking is the age of your seeds. I find having older seeds of some varieties is the reason jugs fail. Lastly, definitely focus on and celebrate the successes!

We had a temp last night of 23.3*F in WI Z5a 😮 and after Wednesday night we will be warmer. It can get cold again going forward. So exciting when winter sow turns out. With our crazy temps the WS did better starting on east side then later moving to south. lol, I had some older Amish cockscomb and I think every seed germinated. I’m having better germination indoors on many flowers. Ooo tomorrow I need to plant a couple tomatoes in a spring sow and see how it compares to indoor seedlings.

Can you winter sow carrots and roses? I love how you plant multiple seeds in one jug, great idea.😊
@EsthersGardeningAdventures
@EsthersGardeningAdventures 6 ай бұрын
Thank you. I've heard carrots can be winter sown but I haven't tried it. I tend to direct sow carrots in the soil in the spring. I am trying to grow some roses using winter sowing this year. It only works if they are grown from seed.

I think you might want to charge your dewalt weed eater and go hack down some of those shrubberies at your fence? Also what are those windows 10:50 behind Lelu for?
@EsthersGardeningAdventures
@EsthersGardeningAdventures 6 ай бұрын
Haha. Yeah. Agreed. They are window frames that I've been planning to make a small garden hot house frame (would use some kind of heavy plastic sheet to cover) for my garden. I just keep forgetting to do it.

I’m in IN zone 5. Started a lot of perennial flowers in jugs. Gonna have a plant sale on memorial weekend. Is it ok to transplant into pots and leave them outside?
@EsthersGardeningAdventures
@EsthersGardeningAdventures 6 ай бұрын
Yes as long as they have 2 sets of true leaves. You may need to cover the potted up seedlings with a frost cloth or move them into a shed or unheated garage overnight if they aren't frost hardy and you have a freezing night.

One option is cutting soil/seedlings into square hunks and plant those chunks. The idea is that the strongest plants for each will survive.

I’ve been transplanting my plants on overcast days after acclimating. They grew lush in the jugs, but most wilt away or don’t grow. They are frost hardy-maybe it’s my clay soil not being amended enough. Are they supposed to take off right away?
@EsthersGardeningAdventures

Plants will be drama queens after being transplanted for a few days. Make sure they are well watered and they should recover after a bit. I do add a bit of worm castings and slow release organic fertilizer when I transplant and I make sure to water the hole I put them in as well as the seedlings after I've put the soil back in. Good luck!

Last year I had poppies that were somehow mixed in with my carrot seedlings. That may be what you have. I didn't figure it out until they bloomed. At that point, I used the slightly bluer leaf color to distinguish them.
