PERFECT timing! this is my first winter--over for my new asparagus, planted last spring ...

Good stuff and makes sense. The less you mess with it the better! Kind of one of the laws of nature, eh? I started a bunch of asparagus from seed this spring. ('cause I'm cheap and patient!) Had probably about 40 plants sprout and I then transplanted them into the ground. It was a dry summer, and I did water them a couple of times a week, but still only ended up with 17 living plants at the end of October. I transplanted them into a more favorable bed (I hope) and it is early December now in PA and some are still showing a green color. They are about 10" tall now and to tell you the truth I'm afraid to mess with them. But once they turn all brown I guess they get the snip! Then I'll wish them up out of the ground next spring and we shall see where we are! Thanks!

Good to know this is my first year with it. Do the railroad ties poison the soil at all though? We use them as a boarder around where we have raised metal beds.

Should we mulch over where we clip down to the ground?

Yes it is always a good idea to add mulch!

This was me exactly! I picked just a few until I heard not to do that yet. I had the same question about it's affect next year.
