Learn the difference between "much" and "many" with this English grammar lesson.
We use many when asking about quantity with countable nouns with the expression "how many". Example: How many apples are there?
We use how much for asking about quantity with uncountable nouns. Example: How much milk is there?
We also use many in negative sentences with countable nouns to describe a small quantity or amount. Example: "There aren't many apples."
For describing a small quantity with uncountable nouns, then we use much in the negative, for example "there isn't much wine."
For positive sentences to express a large quantity, we do NOT use much or many. We prefer "a lot of" or "lots of". For example "There are a lot of oranges" and "there is a lot of milk.
At the end of the English lesson, there are some grammar exercises to test your understanding.
The accent is a British English accent and there are subtitles / closed captions during the whole video lesson.
For more information about the differences between countable and uncountable nouns, see this lesson: • Countable and uncounta...

Hi Andrew is it common to use - How many bottles/cans of milk/coke are there? And what we should answer to the question How much milk is there? Should we answer "There're 3 bottles left ! (?)
@CrownAcademyEnglish
@CrownAcademyEnglish 10 жыл бұрын
umaornk It is common to ask "How many bottles of coke are there?" if the exact number of bottles is important to us. To answer the question of "How much milk is there?" we have a few choices: "There are 3 bottles left." "About 2 litres." "There is about half a bottle." "Not much." "There are 4 crates." I hope that helps. :) Andrew

Hi Sir Andrew! Thank you for this wonderful lesson you have. However I am a bit confused of asking quantity in terms of money. Should I say: “How much money do you have?” or “How many money do you have?” I’m use to the first expression, and the uncertainty that bothers me is the word money. Which lead me to use the word “many” instead of “much.” Is the word money a countable noun? Could you please help me clarify my doubt on this matter? Thank you in advance.

Your method of teaching is really amazing. You are a really GOOD teacher. I am grateful for providing excellent videos. I hope making more videos in the future. God bless you. I have a question: There are many/ a lot of people around the world who are joining the social networks. Can't we use 'many' in that situation?!

Mickey Mouse Yes, for that sentence, we have 2 choices: 1)There are *many* people joining social networks. or 2) There are *a lot of* people joining social networks. Andrew

Andrew, I have a stupid question. I'm confused, I'm still a beginner. :) Can I use "any" in negative sentences? For example: There aren't any apples. There isn't any rice. I learnt this from your previous lesson. Thanks in advance! Erika

***** Yes, that is correct. We can use *any* for a negative sentence but here we are using a different word, *many" to describe a large quantity of a countable noun. I hope that helps. :) Andrew
