" THE " by Gabby Wallace The is commonly used with ,in particular : 1/ species of animals : The whale is the largest mammal on earth . 2/ inventions : Who invented the telephone / airplane / car ? 3/ musical instruments : Can you play the piano / guitar ? When you are making a generalization , 1) do not use the with a plural count noun ex. Apples are my favorite fruit . 2) do not use the with a noncount noun ex. Gold is a metal .

Questions: Why do we use "the names" in this sentence? Use "the" with the names of famous buildings, works of art, museums, or monuments. Why do we not use "the names" in the following one? Use "the" with names of geograhical areas, rivers, mountain ranges, groups of islands, canels, and oceans.

We use "a" (i.e. indefinite article) with 'time' in phrases where we have an adjective preceding it, e.g. have a 'great' time... otherwise we would not say 'a time'.

Our language Japanese does not have any articles like " the, a, an " and we use words corresponding to " this, that, these, those " only if necessary to specify according to the context. Therefore, the existence of these articles in English and many other European languages is really a big problem for us at the beginning.

Unless THE Americans invaded them and that's why they are FORMER. There's 10 M people there, I think they might have felt a bit confused when they heard it.

Hi Rayssa Calazans! This is a great question! In English, some nouns have to have the article and others don't (or it's optional). For example, you could say, "I'm at school right now" or "I'm at the school right now", but you can't say "I'm at bank right now". This is because "bank" needs to have an article, but "school" does not.
