When Undefeated Fighters Get Destroyed | Part 5
Boxing is one of the world's foremost sports that can make or break the most rugged athletes in the world. And it is probably the most unpredictable of all where a single exquisitely timed punch or a catastrophic error can decide a fight. Here we look back at some of boxing’s most shocking moments where the undefeated fighters got destroyed by their counterparts.

Michael Grant was at the time regarded as a serious game contender. And he had been is some fine HW fights so no one can bash on him for not belonging up there. BUT.... Grant was just not ready mentally or had the required experience to fight such a skilled big man like Lennox Lewis. He had the athletics and had enough power but he really needed more developing time in the ring before having taken on Lewis. That loss shot his future confidence and Grant slowly regressed instead of further developments. Grant was easy to like and was seemingly a nice guy and I believe he could have made it IF not that devastating KO loss to Lewis had happend.

He was 31-0 and had just beaten Golata (albeit after Lennox got rid of him in 90 seconds). There wasn't much more Grant could have done in terms of preperaition. I dont think any HW ever other than Ali had the mental capacity or experience to beat a post 1996 focused Lennox.
@WarioSaysSo
@WarioSaysSo Жыл бұрын
@@dylanburston7453 That is a fair argument with how much. But considering this - Golota gave up more or less against Grant and had been KO'd in 1st round by Lewis in 1997. Lou Savarese and David Izon was also good opponents, but there was not enough of "skilled boxers" there, like having fought some opponent with a thretning jab and solid distance control who also was not afraid to mix it up. But considering the materials of the time there was not much to get so yeah Grant could have had problems finding that type of guy. Its just ironic that John Ruiz who was not at the time a better opponent, still would become not once, but twice WBA champion while the more athletic Grant won nothing....

@@WarioSaysSo Golata gave up as soon as you started resisting. Hed either foul you, or just shell up. Hed usually get you out of there before then, tho. It was also Grants only opportunity to fight for the championships, because Lennox had just unified (tho he dropped the IBF to fight Grant) I get why Lennox fought Grant and not Ruiz. Grant was undefeated, and just beat a erratic, but solid contender. Ruiz had been steamrolled by Tua in 12 seconds or whatever it was, and had fought bums and a well out of prime tucker. Plus the size differnce. Ruiz was tiny compared to Grant, who was one of 3 or 4 guys Lennox faced who was bigger than him.
@WarioSaysSo

@@dylanburston7453 - Indeed. BTW, I think you meant Lewis LOST the WBA title for fighting Grant. Lewis was major screwed after that Lineal/WBC/WBA/IBF/IBO unification as Don King used his slimey tentacles to steal away that WBA title from Lewis because King felt Ruiz could not wait til after Grant. The WBA sided with King and took the belt from him, despite Lewis did his best to have it unified...

@@WarioSaysSo I know he lost one of the alphabeties. I was sure it was the IBF, but obviously not. Someone commmented the other day that Lennox was a ducker becuase he fought Grant instead of Ruiz. We should praise boxers for making the better more competitive fight (which grant was at the time) and not folding to the whims of the corrupt governing bodies or POS promoters like King. What really pissed me off about that comment is that Lennox chased down everyone in the 90s. Only Foreman had the balls to admit he didnt want to fight Lennox, everyone else ducked entirely or pushed the fight back, and Lennox gets flak for "waiting" for a boxer to be out of prime. The Evander fight happened over a year too late because evander wouldn't sigh, which pushed evander slightly out of his prime and in the eyes of many invalidates two dominat performances. And the amount of Tyson fanbois who dont ralise Mike ducked him twice in 96, and due to his tendancy to eat peoples ears, the fight couldnt happen for another 6 (one of those was because Lennox lost to Rahman, TBF)

Like Foreman says "Grant should have been down there". That's the difference between grabbing someone to pull him down and punch him, and punching someone who has put himself under you, and why the refs don't warn for that. It would be too easy to constantly put yourself under your opponent's arms when he combos you and he's not allowed to punch. Grant did a terrible mistaken, you DONT bent yourself in boxing, nor you turn on yourself etc.

The Lewis-Grant fight was a total mismatch. Michael Grant was nowhere near ready for a fighter of Lewis's caliber. Grant earned the shot largely off the strength of his win over Golota. A fight in which Golota had a melt down and quit late in the fight when Grant finally started mounting some effective offense and dropped him. But early in the fight, Golota was outboxing him and winning rounds. It showed Grant for what he was, a powerful, game, athletic but raw and inexperienced work in progress. But that win made Grant a credible opponent in the eyes of more casual fans. That allowed HBO to manufacture a challenge for Lewis and sell it to the public. We all knew Grant was being fed to Lewis.

@Baz10 Yeah, Lewis had some sneaky dirty moves in his arsenal. Believe the final knockdown of Grant was the result of an uppercut, landed while Lewis simultaneously pulled Grant's head down. Lewis liked to lean on guys and push them down too. He was also a skilled technician who knew how to use his size and reach to his advantage. He had knockout power as well, particularly in the right hand. His chin let him down a couple of times, but all in all, Lewis was a step too far for Grant at that point in Grant's development.

He had nothing to prove, and he was clever enough, not as ego driven or desperate for money for him to continue way past his best like he saw with his hero Ali, and his contemporises like Holmes, Evander and Mike. Do you think every fighter who wins a couple of rounds before a stoppage is entitled to a rematch? Bruno was up 7 rounds when Lennox turned it around with one punch, Briggs won just one round less than Vitali and it was stopped after 2 knockdowns and a slip. Lennox ripped half of his face off, and was gaining momentum and Vitalis output had all but disappeared. The only thing different between this fight and bruno is that a different man stopped it. Vitali was gassed and going to lose an eye due to the damage done by Lennoxs punches. If it were a headbutt, then its a different story. But Lennox targeted that cut to force the stoppage, and had won rounds 4 and 5 and Klitchko was just standing there taking shots, most of them unanswered It was a TKO stoppage due to the damage Lennox caused. I dont see how thats not a legitimate stop. The doctor stepped in to save Vitalis eye, just like how the ref would step in to save a fighter whos taking to much damage.

@@dylanburston7453 Having read everything you've written, I'm more convinced than before that you didn't fully watch the same fight most people watched. Here's why: -Cry me a river. Everyone has personal issues. Mike had Robin Givens and Don King, Buster Douglass had a mum who'd passed and he himself caught a flu that warranted being on pills even on the day of the fight (according to some documentaries). I'm sure Vitali had his own crap to deal with. Totally irrelevant. -Lennox was 37, not 40 and Vitali was less than 6 years his junior, ergo both were past their prime. -I'm convinced that you didn't watch the whole fight because Vitali was leading on all 3 scorecards and he won 4 of the 6 rounds. He was beating Lennox with his badly cut eye and his output, though hindered, definitely didn't disappear. Also, he won round 4. It was round 3 that he lost, which is the round he got cut. -It's actually not at all like the fight with Bruno because Bruno was only leading on one scorecard and on the other two he tied, all this without an injured eye. @@dylanburston7453 Vitali was at his absolute peak against Lewis and started well but Lewis is the master boxer and my impression from watching it live (which hasn't changed after rewatching multiple times) was that from round 3 Lennox started opening Vitali up like a surgeon. People misunderstand Lewis and paint him as just a fancy boxer, he wasn't, he was the strongest, fastest HW in the World and at worst had the second highest hand speed after Ali with punching power on a par with Foreman. He was always a fighter too. In this fight the ref did his job, if he'd let it continue Vitali could likely have been seriously hurt to the point of a career ending injury being the least of his problems.
