The NRI architect Mukesh Mehta envisioned the Dharavi Redevelopment Project (DRP) in 1995. In 2004, the Government of Maharashtra sanctioned the DRP. As it stands today, the DRP is set to revamp the Dharavi Notified Area (DNA), a roughly triangular patch of land covering a whopping 525 acres of prime land. But the last 16 years have seen the pace of the DRP pick-up and weaken several times.

This is almost exactly how builders develop buildings under SRA, this policy is not new, thus is not by itself enough. Thing is its not really that the project will not be beneficial but that it will depress real estate price in the region as a whole which most builders don't want, thus they lobby and threaten others in order to prevent them from taking up the project. These builders most of the time operate much like mafia so they are not to be trifled with and most governments do not provide proper assurance about physical safety and the ever changing policies and protests in such big ticket projects can very easily bankrupt builders, this is a real threat too.

Delhi might have polluted Yamuna which is a river , but Mumbai polluted the entire sea around it. Juhu ,dadar,girgaun beaches are like dumpyards and smell like drainage. Redevelopment of Dharabi is a MUST work for govts of state and central. At any cost it should be implemented. 100-200 buildings or so (30-floors each building) should be built. It will take half area to accommodate all slum- dwellers. Govt. can set up central business district (CBD) with 70+ floors commercial buildings, Park etc. on the rest half land. Govt. first should determine "real" slum dwellers by conducting a survey. Govt. will distribute one big room with common bath-toilet-kitchen OR a small flat of 2 rooms to every family of Dharavi. Every family will pay a specific amount (money) per month as service charge. Govt may hand over room/flat free or at very cheap rate. GF-5th/6th floor of each 30-floor building will be used as shop, workshop for Dharavi dwellers. Also a hospital, school (s) will be established within the complex. (From Bangladesh)

1. Government needs to give a No clause attached agreement stating that government will be responsible for paying the rent of people living in Dharavi till they have been relocated. This will force Mhada to work faster and get the work processed on a faster speed. 2. The builders need to be given strict timelines to adhere to and any delay should attract penalties and any prior construction should be rewarded in monetary terms 3. The norms wrt to construction quality should be properly set forth and need to be strictly followed. Any deviation from the norms should attract severe penalties 4. Prior approvals should be obtianed from other involved agencies should be taken. Majority of the major infrastructure projects in Mumbai have been stopped mainly by one agency (don't want to name it but all know whom I'm talking about) 5. Agencies like AAI who are known troublemakers should be involved from planning stage and a NOC should be obtained from them prior to redevelopment. This will not allow AAI ot object in future w.r.t the redevelopment of the area. If this procedure is followed Dgaravi redevelopment can take place smoothly and in the shortest possible time. In addition many times it has been seen that people living in such areas after the project has been redeveloped will use the new state of the art buildings as a source of income through renting and start to create new chawls or slums to live in. The government needs to make sure that this thing doesn't happen and the people living in the area don't form a new slum or semi-slum area.

So last year we had a event in college , few people from an NGO from dharavi came to talk , those guys were born and raised in. Dharavi after that 1 hr interaction it became evident that a lot of people in dharavi itself is blocking the plans because of some petty issue, those guy from NGO tried to completely white wash the image of Dharavi as a safe heaven and crime free area where as it is the opposite

If the people and the government cooperate then it will be possible. The only problem of Dharavi is its situation. If you look Dharavi is generating a lot of money . They are always working, even inside houses they ran small business. This is very much impressive, all poor regions in India should do the same thing ,the government should do something on it . If Dharavi get redeveloped it will be one if the best places in India 💖
