Highly likely they’re consolidating at certain bases because those tanks are either being harvested for parts, selected for refreshment/restoration or even being used as a school for mechanics, restorers. As much as I’d like to say they’re empty, it’s more likely most of the garages are full.
@paulwilliams667
@paulwilliams667 Ай бұрын
You’re almost certainly correct they’re full. The interesting question is /full of what?/ Are they functioning tanks or long cannibalized shells and what generation of Soviet armor?
@d3nza482
@d3nza482 Ай бұрын
@@paulwilliams667 If garages were used for storage of functional tanks, or tanks in better condition, easier to refurbish - we wouldn't have been seeing decreasing numbers of tanks left sitting outside, exposed to the elements. Garaged tanks would have been sent to the front - not T-55s.
@shannonkohl68
@shannonkohl68 Ай бұрын
Speculation here, but I would think it more likely that the answer is that they are running out of qualified mechanics to fix them, so they consolidate at a few bases in order to not have a small number of mechanics at all the bases. The idea of it being a school seems unlikely, you would only need a few to learn on, and that number would not grow but would be related to the class size. Obviously as those tanks are fixed, you'd want to bring in more broken ones, but that would still the same number unless the class size is growing. As to harvesting the parts, it also seems unlikely. Cheaper to take the part off the tank where it is, and ship it to where ever the recipient tank is located than ship the whole tank. But who knows, these are Russians we are talking about. For all we know the commander of the base is amassing tanks so when Putin goes down he'll have the biggest tank force in the Russian Civil War.

One other reason for this depot increasing in numbers of tanks in storage is its proximity to the Uralvagonzavod tank factory at Nizhny Tagil, only 130km away. It makes sense to gather all the tanks that you will be fixing up in one place, then ship them at one time to the factory. Especially if you don't have sufficient storage space at the factory itself. It also enables you to be close to your supply of spare parts.

You can imply activity in the garages by the snow melt on the roofs. You will have to allow for some tree cover which will disrupt the amount of snow on the roofs. Some of the garages have zero snow melt and it could be implied that there has been zero activity there either because there is no need or more likely there is nothing there to work with. A few of the sheds do have some snow melt implies activity inside such as engines running or other sources of heat.
@peka2478

Their are a few reasons imo. 1, yekaterinberg is a major transportation hub and could be a stop along the route from russias far eastern reserves to ukraine. 2. It is very close to kazahkstan, which has been helping russia bypass sanctions on electrical components, and this is where theyre processing them and equpping older tanks. 3. Kazakhstan is sending vehicles to russia ans this is their entry point(although nato would likely call them out on this.) 4. A combination of all of the above

Decades of corruption, bad storage and illegal sales have lost hundreds of tanks. Then most of the former tank factories are derelict. In the 1990s we cut up dozens of russian tanks for spares for collectors in the West. We learnt that most of the storage yards arent gaurded and the tanks were getting cannabalised for scarp, / vodka. Some yards never got beyond muddy field status and some "yards" just sent everything to scrap with maybe a half dozen fronting the entrance to the field for show / hold the sign up!

He´s a hack. He forgets the number one reason why they DON´T RUN OUT OF TANKS: Only a small percentage of tanks are actually destroyed. The rest are recovered and repaired. And if not repairable, it is used to scavenge for parts. While Russia has had many tanks hit, that does not equate to losing them. And since they have an entire industry that builds, repairs, and recovers their tanks, Ukraine can never win, because Ukraine does NOT have such an industry. There are RU tanks in the field that have been knocked out and repaired a dozen times!

I think, one of the reasons why we see this base grow, that most likely most "easy-to-refurbish" tanks have been restored and shipped to active duty, and majority of remaining tanks require complex repairs that hard to performed in storage facilities with available resources - skilled workforce/equipment/parts. In situation when Ruzzia runs low on skills/equipment/parts It is easy to run single super-repair center, rather shuffle resource between multiples repair facilities.

100% - some of these tanks are for the new divisions being created. That said, Russia has lost a LOT of armour. The issue is not only the number of tanks but the age of those tanks. Russia is down to using more older and less capable tanks because a lot of newer tanks were lost before they realized how effective Ukraine was at destroying them.

When the SMO started there were rumors of Russia needing to use T-62/64 and even T-54/55 tanks. I heard from a friend in the Donbass that these old tanks were placed at road intersections behind the lines and manned by "older" soldiers familiar with them. A 100 millimeter cannon would do wonders to a pickup truck speeding through to do hit-and-run attacks on logistics hubs.

Its a very good point, but its basically a giant grey zone where people usually just don't know. Doubly so for large and secretive countries. And due to the expense, underground storage is typically for CBRN, specialised factories, and C2C. Storage for standard military equipment is usually above ground for conventional militaries. North Korea is a notable exception though, in particular with their artillery

Russian combat unit make up at the beginning of the war was too small and did not feature enough infantry to work with armored units and protect logistics/support units. Overall, Russian armored vehicles are slightly under strength in terms of both number and quality. In terms of quantity, Russian forces should reconstitute sometime in 2025.
