I live in Idaho, and work for a local Lumberyard. We have seen prices go through the roof. A LOT of it has to do with the Texas freeze last year. Glue companies had burst pipes, and had to shut down, and that spilled over to a huge number of products that use that glue. That's why it's not only lumber that is so expensive. I fear that we will never see those low-low prices that we all became accustomed to.

@houstonwelch4253 3 жыл бұрын
The problem with the modern economy is that it’s impossible to boycott. There are so many people that the demand will always be there. Sure, they won’t profit as much as they would when a bunch of people make their minds up, but they will still profit. Now, we might hit a point in the economy where people at large can’t spend. Then they will decrease.

People would have stopped buying, but the government is sending everyone checks--many people are receiving more money than ever. Meanwhile people aren't working and things aren't getting produced. It is a government created disaster. If you aren't working and you don't have savings, then you should be tightening your belt instead of going on a spending spree, but that isn't the reality thanks to governments across the world printing money like there is no tomorrow. As an OG (Oahu grown) myself I feel ya. $25 osb would be a deal. They sell for $60 at Hardwear Hawaii. $71 for 1/2” T111 and $10 for an 8’ 2x4. Almost all my smaller renos and additions are on hold until the market drops. The only thing we got going is the rising housing costs are still enough to convince people to build for profit for now. I’m afraid once the interest rates start climbing, no one will be willing to gamble with higher prices and lower profits. Then we’ll all have to get into making KZbin videos for a living. Lol.

Now you're onto something there. The small number of large firms that control most of the market is definitely a factor. However - cartels (if this even is one) never hold together for long. They see the chance to make money and they're going to want to sell as much as possible. The problem is, they're running up against capacity right now due to the huge demand spike. Basically, what happened to toilet paper in 2020 is happening to lumber now. Everyone wants it after COVID shutdown.

@@gs300rich4 Except the builders arent doing that much building right now. The demand is from people stuck at home doing renovation projects rather than professional builders snapping everything up. When the housing market crashes, it isnt going to do a whole lot to the building market. If anything, wood prices will go down, builders will start building again in mass, and then home pricing will come back down to earth. Pretty sure housing prices aren't just going to crash though. It may come down a little bit, but I would expect more of an adjustment where if you hid the last year of prices it would look like a continual climb... and then you show the 2020/2021 prices and it will look like a crazy mountain in the middle of an otherwise steady climb lol.

I live in the Portland Maine area and often shop at the big box stores. The supply of lumber that these stores I’ve had on hand seems to be growing more and more each day. Just stopping in today I noticed how every shelf was completely packed to the ceiling in the stacks outside which are normally kept out back we’re so full that they were coming around the side of the building. There’s clearly no shortage of lumber in the southern Maine area, but the prices are still insane.

I’m not sure I like the idea of weakening a stud to straighten it. I’m not a carpenter so I’ll be the first to admit I may be wrong but it just seems that stud wouldn’t be as strong as the rest and if you get the lumber at a big box store and you have to do that to every stud in every wall because none are straight how strong is the structure going to be. Hey Jeff! Thanks again for addressing the lumber pricing issue. So, I live in middle Tennessee about 15 minutes Northwest of Nashville. All of our normal big-box home improvement warehouse stores (Lowes and Home Depot) seem to have plenty of lumber in stock now, but the prices are still VERY high. In September of last year l I had priced the lumber (along with composite decking boards) to rebuild my old, dilapidated 12x12 deck on the back of my house. I figured that with the decking screws/fasteners including , I was looking at about $1,500 (US dollars) to get everything I needed. In April I went to Lowe's to get everything I needed to go ahead and rebuild my deck. The same lumber and composite decking was going to run about $3,800 and as a result I decided not to rebuild the deck just now and hold off to see if the prices will drop some by this fall. Fingers crossed that my deck holds up until then!

Hope it goes well. I started a shed and now it sits bare framed because I blew my savings on the framing. I should be done and have money left over with what I have into it. 16x12 feet with a 6/12 roof. 2700 dollars... Now I'm broke and my shed projects sits like I'm a lazy bozo who can't finish it. I can't afford 85 dollar a sheet plywood. I can't even afford an 11 dollar 2x4 anymore.

I'm in central Alberta, and we're putting off building our house until the wood prices come down. We started planning to build last year and then Covid hit, so we put off building to this year, and now prices went up. Hopefully, things will get better soon.

The only people making more money on the lumber price increase are the sawmills. Labour costs and tree costs are the same and lumber yards haven't increased their margins.

Yes, the BIG sawmills like Georgia Pacific, Weyerhaeuser, Interfor and a couple more. The 5 big sawmill companies and wood manufacturers. Weyerhaeuser alone made over 680 million in their first quarter this year. That's a 220% increase from same time last year. Best to buy from the small local mills as it's obvious the goal is to crush small businesses.

And blame the governments that created laws that force people that they have no choice but to buy lumber that is stamped by a lumber mill. Some counties even make laws that prohibit land owners from cutting down their own trees without a middle man involved.

3/4 inch plywood in ny is almost 100$ a sheet. This is insane. Didnt they make this illegal a long time ago?
