My wife and I did a pre marriage course as is required in our country. We matched up on the questionnaire by 94%. We were quizzed after together on the answer to the question of infidelity, we both answered that if there was any infidelity it was over. The councellor tried to point out that things could be worked out and I stopped her in her tracks and said as much as I loved my future wife that if anything like that happened it was 100% over. One piece of advice given by divorce lawyers to men in the US is NEVER EVER move out. Once you move out, that can be viewed/argued as being abandonment and so you've already lost. You'll lose the kids, house, etc. Stay in the same house and live in it like you always did. I just came from a car crash on the I-90 heading from Toronto to New York. My uncle's SUV was totaled. Me, my cousin and my uncle had the police drop us off to a crappy hotel for the night so we can get picked up from my other uncle. My uncle took the most damage out of all of us. After we went down to get some medicine, A couple of people hanging in the front invited us to their room to drink and smoke. To a point where a cute girl (8 out of 10) was hitting on me quite a bit. Now I don't have cute women hit on me very often. She wanted me for the night, but I had to decline because I was worried for my Uncle's safety in the room alone. I personally couldn't stay with someone who cheated on me. I already have issues with my confidence in relationships, always having thoughts that I would never find someone that loves me, so if I actually got into a relationship with someone I truly believed loved me and then learned that they cheated on me, I would be devastated and I would never feel like I could trust them ever again. Plus he does bring up a good point about being a role model for your kids. I grew up with divorced parents that did a great job with visitation, so I believe I can do a good job supporting my kids as a divorced parent like my father did, but I would never stay with someone I couldn't ever trust again just for my kids.

This. For me it's less about confidence issues and more about the absolute and utter betrayal that cheating on your partner is. It is an immediate and irrevocable breach of any and all interpersonal trust to me. The excuse that "it was a mistake" is such horseshit to me, because it's not like you didn't make a choice. Even if somehow inebriated, it's a shit excuse, because you don't just bump into someone and immediately get to it, there's always going to be ample time, even if for arguments' sake despite it being unrealistic af it's just a single minute of time, it's enough time to run it through your head and make the right choice. Besides, if you know you're 'vulnerable' to thoughts of straying when inebriated, you'd really do best to not put yourself in the situation to begin with.
