Slight correction. Yes the item was used to help the guild progress through the raids but that was not how Blizzard found out. They found out because the item was used in freaking PVP. Back in WOTLK, Alterac Valley was one of the Battlegrounds that could take hours, even literal days to finish. Karate Chop's guild went into one AV match and nuked the enemy team before rushing to the objective while everyone was respawning. This was obviously reported and that's when Blizzard looked at all the backlogs. They were under the radar up until they used it on other players.

Correction, the hours to days long AV matches ended with Patch 2.3 during Burning Crusade. I do believe however that it wasn’t uncommon for a single AV match to last an hour at the start of WotLK as Blizzard tried tinkering with reinforcement counts and penalties for the start of the match and achieving certain objectives. However, by the time of the Martin Fury Incident, you’d only see 30+ minute matches if Horde turtled at IBGY… and only in one or two of the battlegroups, in most battlegroups, the Alliance players learned how to break the IBGY turtle quickly and reliably, often resulting in the Horde just taking more time to lose and with less a chance of winning than just going for the rush, while at least one battlegroups had Alliance players going into other battlegroup forums trying to organize a game-wide Alliance boycott of AV only to be told by their contemporaries in other battlegroups to L2P.

I started to call them idiots but I was reminded of my own stupid behavior that got me banned from a private server. When you first go into Northrend there are these bats on a beach and a quest to catch them with nets. Well, when I finished the quest it didn’t delete the net and I realized that I could cast it on anyone at any time anywhere in the world, and if there was a space under the map it would throw them under there, sometimes with no option to get out other than use their hearthstone or something similar. At first I only used it on higher level players who were camping me, but then I realized that you could select a player and go anywhere in an area out of sight and cast it. I spent days in Stormwind just dropping people under the map. When I got banned, I actually asked for them to give me a break. Nope. I didn’t deserve one either haha.

There was a similar thing that happened in Everquest, but it was a problem with a feature interacting with a barrier to a raid, not a GM screwing up. There is this spell in Everquest called Gravity Flux. It USED to send things up in the air in addition to doing AOE damage. In Shadows of Luclin, there was a raid encounter behind a locked door. The key wasn't available at the time, but it turns out that the raid area was open to the sky. So a guild managed to use a combination of Gravity Flux and Levitation to get in and defeat the boss. The next morning, there was a patch that removed Gravity Flux's effect of sending things in the air (just an AOE damage spell now, I believe with a stun) and all the drops the guild had collected were replaced with "X of Sad Exploitation" (earring, shield, etc) that gave -99 to all stats and resists, -999 to HP and mana, and weighed 99 stone. On the one hand, kind of a jerk move. On the other, they all have a unique item that has never been dropped before or since. And that's not mentioning the Kerafyrm controversy, though in that case SOE did listen to the players.

You know how you give them legitimate backlash for something you don't like? Cancel your sub and don't purchase any more Blizzard products / services. I've been a wow player since cataclysm originally launched. Every single day over the years I constantly see people complaining about half of what Blizzard does, but doing nothing about it. Just like when the character boosts came out towards the end of MoP. Everyone complained about it, but they STILL bought the boosts and kept playing the game. Now years later, the boost is expected in each new expansion. The WoW token came out and it hurt the economy on servers because you could, through Blizzard themselves, buy gold. People complained about that but did nothing. It's a cycle that the players have the ability to end, but they refuse to. Either do something about it, or quit complaining. Blizzard makes a lot of money from the game. Imagine if in the course of a week, that profit dropped to $0. Off course they would fix it. Want the game to be good? Refuse to give them money until they fix the problem, THEN come back. Don't keep giving them money while you complain, because of course they won't change anything. This happened to me in a game called Gladiatus back in the day. You could only attack someone to steal gold 5 times per day. At some point the auto limiter broke and moderators put in a rule that you had to manually observe this rule. Later they fixed it and it would automatically prevent you from attacking after 5X again. Then one day it broke, and I made a 6th attack within 24 hours sometime around 30 minutes before I should've been able to. I'd been one of the higher ranked players, and suddenly got perma-banned. I didn't get my account back for some 2 months and by then I was so far behind I just gave up. I was even a paying customer. Still makes me mad, I enjoyed that game. He didn't cheat, and that's the issue. He was given the item by Blizzard. It's like saying a player in end game gear is cheating because he's beating lower level dungeons or under geared players in PVP. The fault lies with Blizzard for accidentally giving the player an OP item in the first place, if that did not happen none of this would have occurred in the first place. The Player did not acquire the said item by any nefarious means, it was given to them. He did not steal it, he did not use a glitch to acquire it, he did not use any hacking methods/tools to acquire said item. He just used an item he was given. A 24 hour ban was fine, even removing any item or achievements that were acquired by using said item is fine, and at the extreme end if they could not do that deleting that particular character would be fine as well. But the perma ban was harsh because it was the fault of Blizzard not the player for getting the item in the first place.

In US law, the party who was given an item (in this instance, an ultra rare item only meant for game masters) is obliged to inform the giver that they may have erronously been given said item. so if your bank accidentally put 10k in your bank account, you need to tell the bank otherwise its a crime on your part even though it was the banks error. also it seems like the players used this item against other players, and thats when they were caught. anyone of sound mind would know they werent supposed to have this item, and even more so they would know they werent meant to use it against other players, so id say a lifetime ban for the player who didnt tell anyone he got it pretty much follows past instances of the law

It's somewhat common to ban players when they find an exploit the devs forgot about. There was a game some years ago where XP was capped per day, thinking it was fine because no one could reach that mark. Well many ppl easily did it because gamers are gamers precisely because they figure stuff out. What was the devs response? Patch it, and temp ban everyone they could find that used that exploit, that used the games own mechanics in their favour. They were well known for patching and banning ppl and game tricks, even when it didn't give an unfair advantage, only because they found it embarrassing, and viewed players as a monotonous revenue source of robotic consumers. One I remember specifically, the devs patched an exploit that allowed an item to fly you across any inbounds area, but took considerable skill to learn. Because that item could only be used in open areas anyway, it created no exploitatative advantage for players, but was a lot of fun. Well apparently you're not allowed to have fun playing their crappy game. They even suspended players from finding out of map areas when ppl got tired of the monotony of grinding for a skin you couldn't possibly earn, and had to buy the remaining materials.

This ment that the valkyr that were ment to pick up and carry players off the arena were instead carrying them to the edge and dropping them safely, allowing the players to ignore one of the mechanics making the fight easier. I dont remember if it was the one player or the whole guild, but they issued a week suspension before fixing the bug

Bro imagine a hacker putting the classic prototype omnitrix in world of warcraft and leaving little clues around for players to use to try to be the first to find it and claim it for them selfs and just watch the destruction unfold

They really have no way to ban a player, they can only delete the account, they have no way to prevent that player from playing just minutes later. They can do an IP ban, but that is easily circumvented by using VPN or changing ISP.

They weren't shadow banned, or banned to keep a secret. They were banned for *blatant abuse of the item* in Alterac Valley. Blizzard, well people at blizzard, has stated numerous times they'd never ban someone over a mistake they make in game (to my knowledge, true) but will not tolerate blatant abuse, of said mistake, when it comes to others as well. Raid, dungeon, etc progressing with it is one thing....pvp or other competitive scenes changes things a lot. These people had unlimited power and had to squander it in pvp (also, thats how they even got caught, they went totally unnoticed until another user reported an AV match as a bug, thus leading to blizzard seeing massive damage numbers from a DEBUG item on a *normal* player account).

My account was banned for 11 days while I appealed their error for giving me this item. The difference was, I had screencaptures of messages and several emails that showed I was reporting it and unsure if I should be using it or not. I never used it in a raid or pvp, though. Finally they reinstated my account and gave me $180 in account credit, which meant I played for free for a year. They thought giving me a year off free access offset the crap they put me through. Good thing I separated my two tanks and 2 healers into an 1-2, 2-1 split then had them unlink the accounts. When they banned it for those 11 days, I lost my best tank and 2nd best healer, but could still off tank with my alt tank and pop in on my best healer for raids. My resto shaman healer was OVERPOWERED.

I've seen this in several games lately. Where games make mistakes yet hold players responsible. Often players spending money & loosing with NO compensation.

In EverQuest that would be an account ban across the whole guild. There was a pathing but that around 15 people were using to kill mobs. The mob wouldn't hit you. It just ran around. ONE player reported it to a GM and characters built up over years were insta banned. EQ1 liked to nerf classes because people with hundreds of hours invested would work hard and do cool stuff. So their reward was getting nerfef

You forgot that it was due to a GM's error because one of the guild members had their account stolen, buy while restoring their items they accidentally added Martin's Fury.

It’s a pretty normal response. Osrs does the same thing. Dude was abusing an unintended mechanic to get rich

If any part of the plan consisted of PvP, the word cunning has no business being used in that sentence. the lifetime ban was probably a safety measure as no one that "cunning" could safely use a keyboard.

On one hand that is there own mistake but also it feels like it falls into the same vein of "if there is a bug bug in something report it and don't exploit it". This has been a precedent since they banned a lot of high level player in vanilla for using the Ahn'Qiraj glitch to ignore the whole raid and go straight to the final boss.

Exploits almost always involve Dev and/or coding mistakes. That does not mean they are not exploits. Even the RL tax code has an anti-exploit section simply because this kind of crap happens IRL, too

There's an entire class of people, usually in the tech/gaming world, who refuse to think anything is ever their fault. It's always someone else's, regardless of reality.

Watching Blizzard's metamorphic fall from grace has been heart breaking, honestly. My friends and I used to talk about them with near reverence when we were kids, impatiently waiting for the next masterpiece to drop. "It'll be worth it, it always is".. Now..... They're disgusting.

Blizzard has also been known to give "immortality" items to some pvper friends of employees. You'll notice regardless of the attack, ALL pvp spells do 0dmg, cannot stun, immobilize or interrupt the person.

Lol, honestly, as long as that 1st ban isnt part of the “3 strikes youre out” rule of games where it goes 1/3 days, 1-2 weeks then possible perm its a fine ban. I think it was so they can grab the item before they move it somewhere else.

Blizzard didn't ban a player to tie and hide their own mistake. They banned a player because he got an item that he should not have gotten and then he proceeded to use it to kill multiple progression tier raid bosses.

They didn't ban the guild to coverup their mistake. They banned a guild for exploiting an item they knew they shouldn't have. A Dev mistake doesn't give exploiters a free pass and never should. Players should be held accountable for their own actions. This is probably one of the few things Blizzard actually did right.

I wonder, now, if something similar happen(s) in Destiny 2. I did a few PvP arenas, and randomly, every single opponent (us) would just drop dead. One time, an opponent jumped into the middle of a building, pointed his gun at the ceiling, and a huge bubble filled the room, killing everyone but his team.

It wasn’t because they wanted to “hide their mistake” it was because the guild used it to obtain several world firsts even though they weren’t a prominent raiding guild or anything before that. They wouldn’t have been banned if they didn’t use it for gain or didn’t use it SO often XD

Blizzard never will own up for their mistakes, this is a very good example for it. Same with the many bugs Frostmourne had they just blame the player and then secretly fixing the bug not claiming it was a bug

Exactly when has Blizzard listened to backlash? From games like Diablo 3, Starcraft 2, Warcraft 3 (remaster), Diablo 2 (remaster), and Diablo 4, backlash was almost always ignored.

Receiving the item by mistake through no fault of your own is one thing. That's Blizzard's fault. Using it despite knowing better and agreeing to the end user licence agreement is another. That's the players' fault. Opportunity creates thieves. But it doesn't absolve the thieves from guilt and punishment.

Just alter the item! Make it unusable if you don’t have the achievement “game dev” or make it not work. What a weak assed way to force this through. Could’ve made something good out of adventurers fighting the guild to return it til the guild disbanded anyway
