@@RobEgertonJazzTranscriptions Bob played first trombone on my EP "Make Big Band Great Again" which included a McChesney feature called "Pink Sunset" that we co-wrote.

Bob's 'genius' is that he is one of the few trombonists who has effectively overcome the...awkwardness of the trombone's mechanics. Most all the others sound...constrained in facility and limited by the gross movement necessitated by the slide and its lack of valves to articulate individuals notes on a common harmonic plane. And while a few have managed to draw motivation to new creativity from that 'supposed' limitation, such that it incites new trombone specific melodic devices, most trombonists audibly struggle, stagger, and stumble through muddied conventional riffs, and worse...resort to bellowing and belching as it were some animal protesting its last and lost moments.

Great job man. Small correction: the new phrase starting at 1:14 is a measure late I think.

He's such a fine player. I just have never been able to understand why he so strenuously avoids swinging 8th notes during solos. He tiptoes around swing so thoroughly and masterfully, employing literally every other possible combination of note length and articulation, while never just letting two 8th notes swing together.

That's a common observation levelled at Bob's approach, I believe.

@brandondiehl2157 well, of course we all can have our own conceptions of what swing is, and that is totally ok. But Bob plays a whole lot of staccato straight 8ths, mixed with every other incarnation of 8ths known to humans except basic legato swing 8ths and l simply cannot hear it as anything other than him deliberately avoiding in the pocket swing 8ths. And that's fine. He's a phenomenal player and his lines are always very tasty. I just hear it the way l hear it and it bothers me. Others obviously love it and that's totally awesome too.

@@davidtatro7457 i mean if you think rhytmically swinging 66% is all swing is, then sure. But personally that seems really shallow

does anyone have tips on implementing scales into the changes, then turning that into music?

Bob's solos are a great place to start as he is very logical and chord/scale-orientated. A good example of how to apply them musically. Jamey Aebersold is another strong chord/scale advocate.
