@@anyexpat Yeah I remember my dad letting me use the wheel and he'd do the rest, it was just normal. Sometimes he would go "you do the gears" and it would probably get him arrested today. Like the people go on about Madeline McCann, EVERY parent used to leave their kids in the hotel room while they went to drink at the bar. Only now do people go "I'd never leave my kids" and claim they're holier than thou. However when my parents split up I was left at home all the time while my mum worked. What else was she meant to do? Now everyone goes on benefits lol.

Between 1982 (when the statistics on drunk driving started being tracked) and 2018, the rate of drunk driving fatalities per 100,000 people declined 65%. It has nothing to do with too many cars on the road, people were dying far more often, it's just that the laws were loose and people really didn't put the same stigma on drunk driving. In fact, even if you don't adjust for the population increase (which was only 70% in 1982 of what it was in 2018) the drunk driving fatalities still dropped by half. So with 30% more population, we had half as many drunk driving fatalities. Nothing whatsoever to do with number of cars. We just see it more now because of social media.

Daz, It's not really about rank, it's more about jurisdiction. The FBI and Secret Service are Federal and could ask local police to not interfere with their investigation--basically meaning they could take over an investigation. Usually this isn't the case as local police and state are eager to ask for the assistance and resources of federal agencies. CIA, however, do not have jurisdiction within the US. They are only authorized to operate outside of the US in foreign affairs. They do help with identifying threats that could become something like domestic terrorism but then it is handed off to the FBI who have jurisdiction within the US. Edit: yes, of course, the FBI would only take over an investigation if it were under their jurisdiction or asked to by local law enforcement. Jesus Christ.

I don’t know what planet you live on or what country but per the United States Constitution the highest law of the land the highest law enforcement official in the county they are elected in is the county sheriff who they are over every other law enforcement in the county the incident occurs in including state and local city or town and especially over Federal who has the least authority especially when it’s not in Federal owned property. Look it up for yourselves not an opinion or interpretation but read the actual constitution for yourselves. Yes the secret service does have a right to conduct an investigation because it involves someone they’re protecting but they are not in charge

Police in the US go through the whole business of field sobriety tests more as a legal cover rather than to assess if someone is drunk or not. They know within seconds for the most part if someone is under the influence of something or other, but have to make sure all the legal bases are covered if the case is ever challenged in court. They'll go through the entire procedure unless the subject is completely falling down and unable to take any of the tests. Due to the nature of this incident, it's a given that everyone from the shift supervisor, up the chain of command to the police chief, plus the local political bosses, will be looking at what happened and what officers did. Following the book is the best way to cover everyone in that chain.

14:00 You can't really "rank" most departments against each other. The FBI, CIA, USSS, DHS, etc. are completely different agencies with completely different modes of authority, jurisdiction, purposes. Generally the FBI would respond to things like domestic terrorism, Bank robberies, hostage situations, advanced forensic analysis. They have the power to arrest and charge American citizens with Federal crimes. The CIA almost exclusively deals with threats from abroad. They are our primary intelligence agency that collects intel/data of foreign intelligence/threats. They have no power to arrest American citizens domestically. The USSS mainly focuses on protection of President and other high level government. They also combat financial/counterfeiting/money laundering as well as cyber crimes. There are more agencies and most are very compartmentalized there usually isn't a whole bunch of overlap between federal agencies.

Can someone tell me why in the US they don't just go straight to a breathalyser?
@emobx024 күн бұрын
I don't mean to give a non-helpful answer, but it would really depend on each state's specific laws, which you think would only be about 50 possible different procedures, but it can also vary between jurisdictions within states.
@emobx024 күн бұрын
Ultimately Due Process is a big concern, as a breathalyzer is tantamount to search. You wouldn't want a drunk driver to get away with something in court because an officer messed something up procedurally (which does happen). Again, I realize this is a vague answer but it all just depends.

Federal agents of any kind have extensive authority though not absolute authority. That said, it's rare that any local law enforcement can step up in front of the Secret Service. In a protection situation like this, local authorities are obligated to assist the Secret Service and in these situations their authority does exceed local and state.

Secret Service has jurisdiction over local law enforcement when involving the president and VP and their families. They rarely have problems and usually work together. One of few cases of disagreement was the JFK assasination. He was killed in Dallas and by Texas law he had to be autopsied in there. But the secret service wanted him brought back to Washington immeadiately and he was.

The Secret service doesn't have the highest rank. It is about jurisdiction. All law enforcement is equal; each have a different jurisdiction and purpose. When it comes to Protection of the president/VP/candidates & counterfeiting of money, the Secret Service have jurisdiction. When there are crimes committed on Federal land, or involve 2 or more states, the FBI have jurisdiction. CIA has no law enforcement powers. DHS has power over the borders. The EPA has environmental law enforcement powers to arrest and investigate. there are a handful of other agencies that also have federal law enforcement powers. Each agency has full autonomy and makes policies for their jurisdiction. Congress established them and the President (executive branch) runs them. Local police vs county / state police also serve slightly different functions. in generally local police do most of the local policing and state police exist to oversee/audit the police and handle complex cases or conflict of interests.
