My Finnish teacher explained that phenomenon with the words “Don’t worry, this has nothing to do with your ability to speak Finnish and everything to do with the fact that the average Finn has a hard time wrapping their head around the fact that there are people out there, who voluntarily learn Finnish.”.

Why do Finns , Swedes and basically Scandinavians speak such good English. Do you speak it at home too . I can’t believe they can speak such good English and explain it by saying we have English tv programs. They speak English at a level that hints or implies they are immersed in the language . I have always thought they are just naturally good language learners

That's a great question! In addition to the English TV media, many have the opportunity to learn English from a young age, sometimes even in Kindergarten 🙏

It really does have a lot to do with entertainment. First we start quite early learning in school, but because we use subtitles anyway unlike.. I think most of the countries (atleast middle-europe, US etc.) so you do listen english all the time and you pick up new words you don't know, but can tell what it means by the context of what is being talked about (or by finnish subs) and so on. I for example at one point switched to english subtitles and then not using any at all. Theae days it really depends on my mood of do I use finnish or english subs or nothing. Also you want to know what songs are actually saying aswell as in movies the translation can change so much nuanced meanings, puns and so on. It chances quite a lot the experience when you watch a movie just focusing on english. So I do think it's a big part, entertainment that is.

I’m from Dubai - UAE🇦🇪 there was a big event in my country called Expo Dubai 2020, and I really liked Finland Pavilion in Expo, it was so unique and we met Finnish people and learned about Finnish culture, and i bought some traditional custumes. Hopefully i will visit Finland 🇫🇮❤🇦🇪

This happened to me in Spain as well. I talked to them in Spanish, they switched to English because they noticed I have an accent. However I did hit the jackpot when I ended up talking with an 80 years old lady who didn't speak English and she understood me very well 😅

This happens in germany, france and pretty much everywhere i’ve been haha. Unfortunately I think people are used to English speakers not bothering to learn other languages 🫤

I have some facility in German and Russian. Finns have warned me off of trying to learn Finnish. How hard is it to learn Finnish? I have heard that the grammar is next level. Pronunciation seems straightforward. Kiitos!

There are four categories of language difficulty for an english speaker, with category 1 languages being the easiest and category 4 languages being the stuff of nightmares I usually see finnish being high category 3, so there’s a non-descriptive answer. I’ve heard that finnish grammar is SO COMPLICATED that it’s actually very, *very* consistent and logical (except for some really basic things)

In my workplace is a russian guy and we always speak in english. He understands finnish and mostly people speak finnish with him (he needs just some polishing in speaking). To be fair I'm kinda being a bit selfish and want to use english more so do it because of that and also it just seems to work with us and he is fine with it. I suppose tho that I could throw more finnish in between to be fair.

I was surprised when people in Helsinki didn't respond in English because I was kind of relying on that. Apparently it was because they thought I was a local 😂

In general I believe it is kinder speak the local language to everyone and not assume someone is foreigner from their appearance.
